Chapter 395
Vider standing on the lip of the bowl, the plum sky behind him, his two enormous grey hands lifting slowly from his sides and opening, palms down, the way a man smooths a sheet over a bed. And down from his hands, spilling over the rim into the Arena like fog over a weir, the Silence: not drawn as anything, only shown by what it does. In every panel below the rim from here on, the balloons are empty outlines.
Roffe's ladle hitting the cauldron's rim, the SFX box beside it empty. Krydog mid-roar, mouth wide, balloon empty. A troll child crying, balloon empty. And Jorvand's grey script, drifting toward an old fisherman's ear, fading out mid-letter at the edge of the Silence like breath on a cold window.
All down the aisles, the walkers stopping. Mid-step. Blinking. The gentle voice gone out of their ears like a draught when a door shuts. A troll looking down at his empty hands. A fishwife turning round on a step and seeing, far above, the shawl she folded and left. Hundreds of people suddenly standing very still on the stairs, as if they've woken up in the middle of a road.
looking back up the steps at his axe lying where he set it down. Looking at the white patch a stride in front of him. Taking one step back.
(His balloon: empty. His mouth making a word anyone could read: "…What?")
on her step, lowering her hand. Her Hush not needed now. Looking up at the hooded mountain on the rim. And her whole face changing: calm. For the first time in the whole war, the world is as quiet as the world she was born in.
Lärka moving: barefoot, light, down the aisle and into the stopped crowd, not looking where she steps, feeling the stairs through her soles. In the Silence everyone else stumbles and stares round deaf and frightened; she walks through them like someone walking through her own house in the dark.
an old man in the white robe of the Everlasting, still going down, eyes far away, a man who decided before the Silence came and is still deciding. Lärka stepping in front of him and laying her palm flat on his chest.
(Inside the panel border, small: his heartbeat drawn as a faint pulse, slow, slower, going out like a tide.)
The same touch that once quieted a heart toward stopping, turned the other way: holding his slowing heart in place so it doesn't slip. The pulse steadying under her palm. The old man's eyes coming back. Looking down at the small woman in front of him. She turns him round by the shoulders, gently, and points up the steps.
Lärka going down the stands like a nurse down a ward. Palm to a fishwife's chest. Palm to a lamp-bearer girl's back, between the shoulder blades. Palm to the chest of a Brygdar trollwife twice her height. Each one stopping, steadying, turning round. Her own face getting paler with every one.
The five in their ring round Jorvand, the cord humming without a sound. Kali half out of Smurjan's shadow, her mouth going a mile a minute, every balloon she makes empty, a whole stack of empty balloons piling up beside her like plates. Bakasura rising behind her with one huge round empty balloon of his own.
(Vigolas, shuffling in place, laughing silently until his eyes run.)
one great hand turning toward the centre of the floor, making a sign, slow and clear for people who don't speak it:
(At the centre, five heads nod. Vigolas grins and waves both arms.)
at the line, in total silence, hauling walkers back by the collars now that they've stopped, and they let him. Roaring with no sound. Grinning with no sound. A troll he's dragging back patting his bandaged hand as if to say all right, all right.
Roffe coming down the steps from the rim with his cartwheel cauldron strapped on his back like a turtle's shell, and at the first landing where the walkers stand stopped and lost, setting it down and ladling, right there on the stairs. No bell. He doesn't need one. Amber steam rising from the pot and drifting over the stopped crowd's shoulders like one great tablecloth.
down the aisle, silent: a troll passing one to a fisher, the fisher to a lamp-bearer child, the child to an old ex-Everlasting. Spoons. Steam. And as each one eats, a warm amber light coming up in their chests and their eyes. Faces losing the faraway look. Somebody, silently, asking for seconds.
still at the edge of the white patch where her laugh was eaten, bells silent, standing in the one thing she is afraid of more than anything: a silence with no end to it. Her face perfectly still. Her hands shaking.
passing her, stopping. Laying her palm on Tihi's chest. Feeling the racing heart. Then taking Tihi's hand and laying it flat on Tihi's own chest, so the girl can feel it too. Tapping her own ear, and shaking her head. Tapping her own heart, and nodding. Almost a smile.
(Tihi's mouth opening on a laugh with no sound in it. Nothing comes out. But her rose marks glow, just a little.)
The Arena at nightfall, the last plum light leaving the sky, in total silence: every balloon on the page an empty outline, every SFX box empty, an army of a hundred worlds standing on the stairs with their mouths open and nothing coming out.
On the rim, the hooded mountain with his two great hands held out over the bowl like a blessing.
Down the stands, the walkers stopped on every step, turned round, climbing back up toward the amber steam of a cauldron set down on a landing, a huge cook ladling, bowls going hand to hand.
Through the middle of them, small, barefoot, a woman with cropped white hair moving from person to person with her palm on their hearts.
At the line of the Great Ring, a big man hauling people over the rope with no sound at all.
At the centre, five people in a ring of light round a stooped old man, whose mouth is moving, and moving, and nothing is coming out.
Vider coming down from the rim. Down the stands step by step, slow as a glacier, each bare grey foot setting down like a boulder, the crowd parting round him. A small Sign-speaker in grey hurrying behind him, braids flying: Sister Tecken. He reaches the bottom step at the edge of the floor and stops, facing the centre across the patches of white.
inside the ring of five, looking back at the giant. Recognition in the old reader's eyes. His lips moving: a greeting, a name, an old man's courtesy. Nothing comes out. Nothing reaches anyone. He stops trying.
signing slowly, clearly, across the floor:
A long silence inside the Silence. His bandaged right hand, the ink-stained one, moving behind his back, out of sight. His eyes lowering. He says nothing. In here, nothing can be said.
(The last sign is a huge grey finger pointed at the white.)
standing in the loop of light with everything he wanted to say unsaid. For three hundred years he kept a library of everything nobody said. Now he is standing in one, and none of it is his. His face, for a moment, very old.
sitting down on the bottom step of the stands, slowly, the way a hill settles after a landslide. Hands resting on his knees, palms down, still holding the Silence over the bowl. Sister Tecken sitting beside him, small against his side.
The stands lit by lamps set on the steps, small clay lamps relit and picked back up. The walkers back in their rows with bowls in their laps. Amber in every chest. Roffe still ladling, his own stomach rumbling silently. The lamp-bearer girl with her lamp in her lap again. Krydog at the line, one boot in, with a bowl somebody made him take.
at the foot of the stands near the Ring, at her ceiling. Kneeling on the bark with both hands pressed over her ears, the old pose from the day she first heard her own heart. Her own pulse, drawn faint in the panel border, going quiet. Too many hearts held. The silence turning inward.
Krydog, reaching from the line with one long arm without lifting his planted boot, hauling her up by the wrist (a Hand Up, no magic in it) and swinging her bodily over the rope into the Ring. Inside the gold line everything a shade calmer. Emma at the knot laying a hand on the small woman's back.
(Inside the panel border, Lärka's pulse catching, and beating on in Emma's time. Another white strand drawn at Emma's temple, though there's no auburn left to lose.)
on his step, turning his hood toward the Ring. Seeing her safe. And lowering his hands.
The Silence lifting off the Arena like a lid off a pot, and the first sound in an hour pouring in at once: a thousand spoons, a cough, a laugh, the crackle of lamp-wicks, Roffe's stomach.
and the grey script drifting out again across the bowl, gentle, patient, the same as before.
A BRYGDAR TROLL on the steps, a bowl in his lap, amber glowing in his chest, mouth full:
(All along the row, people laughing. Somebody passes him bread.)
Jorvand, the grey words drifting back to him unused. A small, rueful tilt of the head.
Svala on the highest rail with her black bird's eye, screaming, pointing down over the rim. And through the dark beyond it, down the face of the world tree, the Bridge of Every Ship: and the white running down it, along its chalk lines like ink down a gutter, span after span below the rim going never-there, lanterns on them winking out, people on them falling. Toward the fleet a mile below.
And on the steps, a slim woman of charcoal with cracks glowing like embers and hair of rising smoke, already running for the rim, black footprints smoking behind her:
