Chapter 68

PAGE 1
P1WIDE, Mosscap.

A hill of giant mushrooms in the rain: round doors cut into the stems, rope bridges slung from cap to cap, little glowing windows. Half of it is going grey, fading like ink in water. Small figures run down the slopes: the mushroom folk, knee-high people with caps for hats, moss for hair, and glowing lantern-fungus held up in their tiny hands.

P2MID, the ridge above the village.

A line of Cleaners in robes of printed black and white, grey hounds straining on chains. At the centre, two thin, pale, identical clerks hold one long scroll stretched between them. One reads the first half of each line; the other reads the second.

FOUR-TWELVE

the smallest, staring at the lantern-fungus in its hands. The blue glow is turning grey.

P4ACTION.

Blink: a silver-rose afterimage, and Rougeina is behind Four-Eleven with one hand clamped over his mouth. His half of the line dies unheard. On the hill below, the grey stops spreading mid-wave.

ROUGEINA
Half a sentence.
P5CLOSE, Four-Twelve

still reading his own half, alone. Nothing greys. Without the other half, the line doesn't land.

FOUR-TWELVE
"—its small ones—" …Four-Eleven! Four-Eleven, finish!
PAGE 3
P6ACTION.

Kompis, down on one knee on the slope, Mingus braced at his heel, fires Lilla Ulv. The cub-shaped bullet bounds up the ridge, off a rock, off a hound's skull, and bonks the scroll clean out of Four-Twelve's hands.

LILLA ULV
paper! bonk!
P7ACTION, a run of fast panels.

Kali erupts from Smurjan's shadow into the grey hound-pack, sickle flashing, mouth going faster than the blade.

KALI
Grey dogs! I hate grey dogs! Last time we ate grey dogs we were sick for a WEEK—

Vigolas punches a Cleaner clean off the ridge in a burst of green light.

Smurjan walks through the line of Cleaners, unhurried, half an inch at a time, his open palm dropping them one by one. His left palm. He frowns at it mid-strike, and the strike lands anyway.

P8CLOSE, Four-Eleven

twisting out of Rougeina's grip, gasping, furious.

FOUR-ELEVEN
Sigvat would have read it in one breath!
FOUR-TWELVEclutching his stung hand
Sigvat would've read the whole hill in one breath!

seeing Smurjan for the first time. Their faces harden, identically.

FOUR-ELEVEN
You.
FOUR-TWELVE
The Trinity.
FOUR-ELEVEN
Architect Two wrote you out four hundred years ago—
FOUR-TWELVE
—and you've never had the decency to be gone.
P10CLOSE, Smurjan

deadpan.

SMURJAN
We remember you. We left you tied to a pine at the Kråkberg gorge.
FOUR-ELEVEN
For two days.
FOUR-TWELVE
Two days.

P11WIDE.

Behind the Cleaners, out of the rain, someone tall is walking up the ridge. Wherever her bare feet press the soil, green shoots up, blooms, and wilts again within a heartbeat. The grey hounds stop snarling. They whimper, flatten their ears, and lie down in the mud.

P12CLOSE, the Twin Clerks

turning. Four-Twelve snatches the scroll back up out of the mud.

PAGE 6
P13LOW ANGLE, the figure.

A woman well over two metres tall, wrapped in fungus and mould and wet black leaves like a gown. Mushrooms grow out of her collarbones. Beetles and pale moths nest in her long, dark, tangled hair. Her bare feet sink into the earth and root there. Her eyes are dark as wet soil, ringed pale like the gills under a mushroom's cap. Around her, every Cleaner is covering his nose. She smells like a forest floor after a month of rain.

scroll stretched between them, reading fast, together:

FOUR-ELEVEN
"By decree of the Null Protocol—"
FOUR-TWELVE
"—the burl designated RÖTA!"
PAGE 7
P15CLOSE, Röta.

Nothing happens. Not a leaf of her greys. A moth crawls out of her hair, looks at the Clerks, and crawls back in.

P16CLOSE, Röta

smiling. Her voice is low and warm and slow, like rain on a roof.

RÖTA
I'm not in your book, little clerks.
RÖTA
Your Ledger counts what's born and what's made. Nobody bore me. Nobody made me.
RÖTA
I grew.
PAGE 8
P17ACTION.

She touches the scroll with one long finger, more root than finger. The parchment softens, browns, crumbles, and out of the crumble a nettle shoots up, fast and green and stinging, right into the Clerks' hands.

FOUR-ELEVEN & FOUR-TWELVE
OW! OW OW OW—
P18ACTION.

She walks on past them. Behind them, the Cleaners' iron-shod sleds slump and soften under her gaze and rot into low hillocks of flowering moss. The Cleaners run, dragging their whining hounds, the Clerks shaking their stung hands and wailing, down the far side of the ridge into the rain.

P19SPLASH (double page). THE ROT-MOTHER.

Röta stands on the ridge in the rain, and behind her the grey half of Mosscap regrows in a rush: grey caps blushing back to colour, new mushrooms pushing up through the old, rope bridges tightening, every little window flickering back to warm blue light. The mushroom folk crowd round her feet in hundreds, careful to stay a pace away, never touching her.

In the foreground, small, the crew, mud to the knees. At the front, Smurjan, soil on his robes and moss in his braid, his face lifted to hers.

Röta looks down at him with an expression of enormous tenderness.

RÖTA
…There you are.
PAGE 11
P20MID, the crew

close to her now. Things start happening to them:

A fuzz of grey mould creeping up the sleeve of Kompis's hoodie.

Little green shoots sprouting from the cork soles of Vigolas's boots.

Mingus sneezes, enormously. HUPTCHOO!

Trollmage, who has sat down in the mud because standing is effort, has a small brown mushroom growing on his knee.

P21CLOSE, Röta

stepping back: three long steps, hands lifted up and away from them. Sad, and used to it.

RÖTA
One minute. Nothing that lives can stand near me for more than a minute.
RÖTA
I'm sorry. I'm always sorry.
PAGE 12
P22TWO-SHOT, Röta and Smurjan

three metres apart in the rain.

RÖTA
Four hundred and six times I've grown you back, my boy. Every spear. Every fall. The gorge at Kråkberg. The spear in the bark-yard.
RÖTA
Yesterday, at my gate.
P23CLOSE, Smurjan.
SMURJAN
We know.
KALIstepping half out of his shadow, one arm folded across her chest
And we never once said thank you. Which, in our defence, she also never asked.
PAGE 13
P24CLOSE, Röta

looking at Kali with a mother's patience and a creditor's eye.

RÖTA
Hello, borrower.
RÖTA
You owe me a minute.
P25CLOSE, Kali

wincing, talking fast to the crew before anyone can ask.

KALI
Long story, short version! The very first time we died, we woke up in her roots, and she wanted to keep us, and I took her rot. Sixty seconds. Rotted us a way out and ran. And when you take a sin, the owner goes dark for the minute, so for one whole minute—
RÖTA
—for one whole minute, nothing in all of Trinity grew. For the first time in ten thousand years.
KALI
…Yeah. That.
PAGE 14
P26CLOSE, Kali

suddenly sheepish, holding up her stump in its red cloth.

KALI
While you're here, though… this. Salt-fire. It didn't grow back. It always grows back, and it didn't. Could you—?
P27CLOSE, Röta's long root-fingers

touching the end of the stump, very gently, for one second.

RÖTAsoftly
…Salt.
RÖTA
I can't. Salt is the one thing I can't make anything of. Salt keeps a thing exactly the way it died.
P28CLOSE, Kali

pulling the stump back, her grin shaky.

KALI
…Worth asking.
PAGE 15
P29MID, a little way off.

Kompis and Kali stand together, watching Röta talk with Smurjan under the dripping caps.

KOMPIS
Why didn't the decree work on her?
KALI
Not in the book. The Ledger's got no line for her. You can't uncount what was never counted.
KALI
Same as me, actually. And the big guy. And all eighteen of the voices in there. When I step out on my own, the board doesn't even know what number to show. Only he's in the book. (She jerks her chin at Smurjan.) Never decided if that's an insult.
P30CLOSE, Trollmage

lying flat on his back in the mud now, eyes shut, Codex on his belly, mushrooms sprouting along the hem of his robe. The crow on his chest has a tiny mushroom growing on its head and doesn't seem to mind.

TROLLMAGE
I'm banking. I've got nothing left after the maze. Wake me in a few days. Gently.
P31CLOSE, Röta

turning to look at him, delighted.

RÖTA
Oh, this one I like. He holds still.
PAGE 16 — THE HOOK
P32CLOSE, Röta

her gaze going down the hill to the Marka, resting on the soil-sea below, her bark hull glowing faintly gold in the rain.

RÖTA
And that's my tree's skin you're sailing in.
VIGOLASstepping forward, chin up, boots sprouting
It's my ship.
RÖTA
…For him, I'll let it go.
RÖTA
My brothers and sisters won't be so kind.
P33CLOSE, Röta and Smurjan.

She leans down toward him, as near as she dares, not touching.

RÖTA
Come home, my boy. Stay with me.
RÖTA
I can take the hunger out of you.
P34FINAL PANEL, low angle, Smurjan's three shadows on the wet soil.

The biggest one, the shadow that's all mouth, slowly lifts its head from the ground. From somewhere deep inside it comes a sound like a landslide in a throat.

BAKASURAfrom the shadow
…Grrrrrrrrrr.
