Chapter 43
staring at Vigolas.
grinning, a little broken.
quieter.
His three voices, for once, don't argue with each other.
He looks through the fading window at a golden dog standing in front of a blade.
Vigolas turns to face the closing sky, the rows of the dead and the voice that has no face. He spreads his arms.
a long pause, then:
THE CALLED ONE, VIGOLAS, YIELDS.
THE MATCH DECIDES.
SMURJAN DEFEATED VIGOLAS.
THIS HOLDS IN EVERY LIFE.
Something presses into him, a stamp, a mark like a brand of cold light over his heart, and fades. Written where nobody will ever see it, it will never come off.
hand over the place, laughing shakily.
The bowl of the Arena stops closing. The stars come back out, one by one. The sea goes perfectly still: a mirror under the stars.
In the rows of the dead, figures begin to step forward. Not the dead of the seventeen ships. These come from the very front row, the ones who were standing closest the whole time: a dozen sailors in black-sail coats, soaked, grey, salt in their beards.
His crew. The crew that went down with him in this storm.
seeing them. His face crumples.
an old bosun with a grey beard and a ring in one ear. He looks at Vigolas and says nothing, because the dead don't speak here.
The old bosun raises one hand: a sailor's salute, two fingers to the brow. Behind him, every man of Vigolas's drowned crew raises a hand the same way. Then, further back in the rows, among the dead of the seventeen ships, some of them do too: a merchant captain, a navy gunner, an old cook with a ladle in his belt. And at the very front, small, in a cabin-boy's cap, the boy from the Starling lifts his hand and holds it there.
Not all of them. Not even most. Some. A field of grey salutes rising out of the dark water under the stars, and in the middle of it, alone on the mirror sea, a pirate on his knees, crying.
on his knees, wiping his face with the back of a bloody hand.
standing a little behind him. He bows his head to the dead, because he knows what carrying them properly looks like.
cold and final:
THE MATCH IS DECIDED. THE CALLED ARE RETURNED.
The Arena comes apart: the sea, the sky and the dead dissolving into falling light, like a painting washed off glass.
The Marka's deck. Lärka's pale blade is coming down at Mingus, the dog standing in front of Kompis.
Two men slam onto the deck out of thin air, right on top of the fight. Vigolas lands on his back between Mingus and the blade, and the blade stops a hand's width from his face, because Lärka, startled for the second time in her life, has hesitated.
flat on his back, looking up the length of her blade.
landing in a crouch behind Lärka. Crimson script glows across his whole body now. His third eye opens, rimmed in red.
Rougeina, halfway up the mast, stares. Drekk drops his axe. Trollmage, flat on his back, starts writing furiously in the air:
OH THANK EVERYTHING
on his knees, grey, barely conscious, seeing Vigolas's face upside down above him.
On four great Scalelist boards in four different places (a drifting market island, a troll hall, a Trisdel fortress, a fishing town), two lines move at once:
SMURJAN climbs, past a dozen names, a hundred.
VIGOLAS ∞−1 doesn't move. Beside it now, in small cold letters that never appeared before: 1 defeat (HADOM).
Sentinels pointing up at it in shock.
SMURJAN · K-IV · #1,602 — (over) — VIGOLAS · ∞−1
The first time anyone in the world has ever seen a name sit above the unnumbered man.
