P1FULL-FIGURE, ALDHRUN

on the stone jetty before the open sea-gate. Broad as a door, grey-bearded, his face a map of scars over scars, the newest one, from the night of the Heist, running from brow to jaw and never closed. Grey robe over plate armour. A war-axe across his back. On his left arm, a tower-shield of white iron taller than he is, its face dented by a thousand blows.

ALDHRUN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Ten, Keeper of the Bastion

P2CLOSE, Vigolas

in his puddle, grinning up.

VIGOLAS
Hi! You're the one who—
ALDHRUN
You robbed my Archive.
VIGOLAS
Borrowed.
ALDHRUN
You fell out of it with a hall in your pocket.
PAGE 2
P3CLOSE, Aldhrun

looking over the crew one by one with a soldier's eye: Kompis's five guns, Smurjan's shadows, Öde's arm, Isa's stillness, the drowned giant in the white. Then Rougeina. His eyes stop there and harden.

ALDHRUN
…You.
ROUGEINAnot blinking
Me.
P4CLOSE, Aldhrun

a long beat. Then he turns his back on her, deliberately, to face the white.

ALDHRUN
The Heist is a blood debt. · The Null is a bigger one. · Get behind my wall. All of you. · We'll settle accounts if there's anything left to settle on.
PAGE 3
P5CLOSE, Lärka

on the gate-tower above, finger to her lips, eyes wide. She looks from Aldhrun to Kompis, and nods. It's okay.

P6CLOSE, Aldhrun

quietly, to Kompis, as the crew splashes up out of the puddles onto the jetty.

ALDHRUN
She hasn't said a word to me in two years. · She spent her one on you. · Explain that.
KOMPIS
…I told her what she was hearing, once. · Her heartbeat. First thing she ever heard.
ALDHRUNgrunting
…Hm.
PAGE 4
P7WIDE.

Out of the white, the main assault: not fifty Unwritten but hundreds, wading in a grey tide, silent, faces blank, and behind them the Tideline itself rising like a slow white wave, swallowing the black fjord water, eating the cliff-foot.

P8CLOSE, Aldhrun

planting his feet on the jetty, setting the bottom edge of the tower-shield against the stone.

ALDHRUN
Stand behind me. · Directly behind me.
PAGES 5–6 — SPLASH
P9SPLASH (double page). LAST WALL.

Aldhrun drags the shield's edge along the stone in one long, grinding arc from cliff to cliff across the jetty's mouth, sparks spraying, and behind the line it draws, a wall rises: white stone shot through with hard light, smooth and seamless, climbing as high as the gate-tower, a barrier across the whole fjord-head.

Before it, the grey tide of Unwritten wading in. Behind it, the crew, the Bastion guards, Lärka on the tower. In the middle, small against his own enormous wall, an old scarred soldier with his shield pressed to its foot.

GRRRRRRRRRRNK.
PAGE 7
P10ACTION.

The Unwritten reach the wall and stop. They press against it, grey hands flat on the white stone. They can't cross. They can't grey it. They walk, and the wall holds anything that walks.

P11CLOSE, Isa

staring at the wall, a beat late.

ISA
…It's holding them.
TROLLMAGEawake, impressed despite himself
Nothing that walks crosses it. Not a body. Not a Swap. Not a gate. · It's the best wall in the world.
PAGE 8
P12ACTION.

The Unwritten start to strike the wall: grey fists, grey shoulders, one after another, a hundred of them, battering.

P13CLOSE, Aldhrun's face

pressed to the back of his shield. With every blow on the far side of the wall, a new scar opens on him: a line across his cheek, his arm, his neck, thin and red, one for each blow. He doesn't flinch.

VIGOLAShorrified
…It's hitting you.
ALDHRUN
Every blow on my wall lands on me. · That's the price. · I'm a map of every attack the Archive has ever suffered.
PAGE 9
P14CLOSE, Rougeina

stepping up beside him at the shield, without asking. Drawing her blades.

ROUGEINA
Then fewer blows.
ALDHRUNnot looking at her
You killed six of my colleagues.
ROUGEINA
Yes.
ALDHRUN
…Some of them deserved it.
ROUGEINA
All of them were on my list. · You never were.
P15CLOSE, Aldhrun

a flicker of something. Not quite a smile.

ALDHRUN
…I'm told that's a compliment.
PAGES 10–11 — THE CLASH
P16ACTION, a run of fast panels.

The crew fighting from behind a wall.

Rougeina, Tear-Swap: swapping through the light of the wall for half a heartbeat (Aldhrun dropping it one hand-width to let her pass), out among the Unwritten, cutting rings, lockets and letters, and swapping back before they can touch her.

Kompis on the gate-tower beside Lärka, firing Tyst, silent, over the wall at the emerald lights.

Smurjan, Trollmage and the Bastion guards holding the cliff-paths at either end of the wall.

Öde on the jetty, grass springing through the stone, catching the guards who fall back wounded.

Drämmen, on the far side, alone in the white, dragging Unwritten back one by one, Undertow in reverse, up onto his puddles where they flicker into faces and fall to their knees.

P17ACTION.

Behind the wall, the scars opening on Aldhrun slow. Fewer blows. The crew is taking them for him.

ALDHRUNgruff
…Hm.
PAGE 12
P18CLOSE, Aldhrun

between blows, to Vigolas, quietly.

ALDHRUN
I sent to Glasheim for help three days ago. · To the Council. · Solvig answered.
VIGOLAS
And?
ALDHRUN
She said the Tideline would stop at my gate. · She's never been wrong about the Null. Not once in five hundred years.
P19CLOSE, Aldhrun's scarred face

very still.

ALDHRUN
…I'm starting to wonder how she knows.
PAGE 13
P20WIDE, dusk.

The Unwritten falling back from the wall in a grey tide, back into the white, leaving rings and lockets in the shallows. The wall holds. The jetty holds. Aldhrun still has his shield pressed to its foot, covered in thin red lines.

P21CLOSE, Lärka

coming down from the tower with a basin of water and cloths, and silently starting to clean the old man's new scars. He lets her.

PAGE 14
P22CLOSE, Kompis

sitting on the jetty with Mingus, watching the white, eyes gold. The threads of the Unwritten out there are none. But something else is moving in the white: not walking. Spreading.

KOMPIS
…Aldhrun.
P23CLOSE, Mingus

ears flat, staring at the foot of the wall. Then he trots down the jetty and stands in front of Kompis.

PAGE 15
P24WIDE.

The Tideline itself, the white, reaching the base of the wall. It doesn't strike it. It doesn't press against it. It doesn't walk at all.

P25CLOSE, the foot of the wall

where white stone meets white nothing. And the white is seeping: soaking into the joint between the wall and the jetty stones like water into a sponge. The stones of the jetty, on the inside of the wall, going grey. Colour. Then shape.

(Empty SFX box.)

PAGE 16
P26CLOSE, Aldhrun

looking down at the grey creeping under his wall, his face going hard and old.

ALDHRUN
…My walls hold anything that walks. · That doesn't walk.
TROLLMAGEvery quietly
…It doesn't do anything. It just stops being there. · Things stop being there.
P27CLOSE, Drämmen

out in the white beyond the wall, turning his drowned face toward the seep, water pouring from his mouth.

DRÄMMEN
…It's coming under. · Always does.
PAGE 17 — THE HOOK
P28WIDE.

The inside of the wall: the jetty, the gate's threshold, the first steps of the Bastion's stair, all going grey in a slow, spreading stain. Guards backing away. Lärka with the basin, frozen.

P29FINAL PANEL, close on Aldhrun

kneeling, laying his scarred bare hand flat on the greying stone inside his own wall, as if feeling for a heartbeat.

ALDHRUNbarely audible
…It's under my wall. · It's in my house.
