Chapter 228
in the white, very still.
drawing the folded Ledger page from his coat, shaking it open, VIGOLAS, eight lines struck, one empty, and the grey pen sliding out of the air into his fingers.
The grey pen touching the ninth line. And in Vigolas's chest, again, the door opening: a hairline of grey, then a hand's width, the Null looking out of him.
staggering. No crew. No voices. No Knot. No emerald light pouring into him this time. Alone in the white with a door opening in his chest.
with his memories back. He can feel all of them: his mother's four notes, Hild's grin, Ture, the bowline, thirty-four, a stolen apple and the sea. And he can feel the fear, the child's fear of the dark, cold in him, looking at the grey door in his own chest.
writing, slowly, gently.
and in his eyes, something settling. Not lightning yet. A decision.
Under the coat, under the opening door, his heart. And inside one heartbeat, full burn: every possible action but one.
naming the one thing he gives up, before the beat lands. Clear. Out loud. Said, in a place where nothing is said, so it stays said:
on the ninth line, and the line refusing it. The grey ink beading up on the paper like water on wax, not taking. Nothing can edit him for the rest of this fight. Not a rank. Not a line. Not a door.
The full burn of the Minus One: every action but one.
Vigolas crossing the white floor between them.
His fist not at Jorvand's face, not at the grey: at the paper, the Ledger page.
His hand closing on the page and tearing it out of the old man's fingers, the grey pen spinning away into the white.
Green lightning wrapping the page.
COMPACT.
The Ledger page folding: eight struck lines and one empty line folding in on themselves, smaller, smaller, into a cube the size of a die, white as paper, with a faint grey line visible inside it like a crack in ice. (Within his measure: a sheet of paper. No memory taken.)
tumbling through the white air, untouched by the fold (nothing touches the Null), and falling onto the Margin's white floor, where it rolls, and stops, and slowly soaks into the floor like a drop of ink into blotting paper. Gone.
staggering back with the cube in his fist, and his heart stops: one beat, the Minus One's burn cost. The panel goes black for one heartbeat. Then:
(He breathes again.)
closing: a hand's width, a hairline, gone. The grey shut out. Behind it, his heart, beating, his.
holding up the white cube between finger and thumb, grinning through the sweat and the fear.
The endless white library of the Margin. In a small clearing of emptied shelves, a young man in a torn midnight-green coat stands with a tiny white cube held up between finger and thumb, his other hand pressed over his heart, afraid, shaking, grinning, standing.
Before him, an old man in a grey coat, empty-handed, his pen gone, his page gone, the black bars on him drifting loose, looking at the young man with an expression of total astonishment.
Across the top of the spread, in Vigolas's own voice, said aloud, so the white room keeps it:
very quietly.
stepping closer, the cube in his fist, and looking up into the old face, and saying, aloud, the thing withheld on the man's own plate for three hundred years:
flickering over his head, the black bar across his office cracking, falling away like a scab, and under it, for the first time anywhere, in plain script:
JORVAND KESTRAAL · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Twelve, Keeper of the Arena
staggering as if struck, a hand to his chest. Said. His name, his office, said aloud in the place where he kept everything unsaid. Something in him pulled back toward the count, and it hurts him, the half of him that's grey.
And all round them, set off by it, the shelves emptying: jars clearing, notes unfolding, black bars peeling off names, one aisle, then another, then whole avenues of white library, everything that was withheld here said at once and flying away into the white sky like birds let out of every cage in the world.
A thousand years of Vider's unsaid "I love you"s, rising out of their jars as faint violet light and drifting away toward the edge of the world, toward a seated giant on a bench, who will feel them arrive and not know why he's smiling under his hood.
the black bars falling off him faster now, and under them, grey. Not the kind old face. The Null's grey, soft, edgeless, the part of him that walked too far in. He's cracking, like old porcelain, grey showing through.
backing away toward the Margin's grey edge, toward the place where the white goes soft and endless, his outline fraying.
reaching out a hand, the way the old man held his out two chapters ago. Open. Palm up.
looking at the offered hand for a long, long time. Tempted. Almost.
stepping back. One step. Into the soft grey edge of the Margin. Half of him already gone into it. The kind face turned back toward Vigolas, the black bars drifting across it like the shadows of birds.
his hand still held out, empty.
cracked, grey showing through the kindness, fading into the grey with the faintest sad smile, his voice like paper tearing gently:
(He's gone.)
