Chapter 223
held out across the desk. Ink-stained fingers. Steady.
looking at the hand. Mingus pressed against his leg, a low growl in his chest. A long beat.
lifting the same hand, palm out, the way you'd raise it to stop a carriage. And across the air in front of him, black bars drawing themselves, long and neat.
The black bars flying, a dozen at once, across the room, and over every member of the crew's head, across their rank plates:

looking up at the black bar where his plate was. Then trying to say Rougeina's name, and a black bar landing across his balloon:
raising her arm with the names on it, and every name, every place-ink, barred: neat black lines across a hundred and sixteen words. She can see they're there. She can't read them.
staring at the bar over his own head, at his crew, at the bars over theirs. Nobody on any board. No ranks. No numbers. No titles. And, slowly, despite everything, he looks almost curious.
blades up, plateless, nameless, furious.
The crew against REDACT.
Rougeina Swaps for a page on the shelf, and a black bar lands across where she's going: the destination withheld. She swaps into nowhere and stumbles back out where she started.
Smurjan charges, and a black bar lands across his chest, over the voices: all seventeen, Marka's among them, withheld. For the first time in his life he's alone inside himself. He stops dead, swaying.
Isa plants her feet, and a black bar lands across her eyes: her sight withheld. She can't hold what she can't see.
Trollmage's book: a black bar across its cover. The Gluttony Codex goes dead in his arms.
in the middle of it, not attacking anyone's body, just drawing lines, gently, precisely, like an editor at a desk.
out of Smurjan's shadow, grabbing his face in her one hand, shouting into his ear.
great jaw, white-streaked, nudging Smurjan's other side.
nameless, plateless, eyes gold, and the threads are still there. Every thread between the crew, tied since the Dawnstar: none of them barred. Glowing. Felt.
pausing, his pen-hand stopping in the air, looking at the glowing threads between them with something like longing.
one on Mingus's golden neck, and SHARED BEAT: gold heartbeat-lines leaping from him to every one of the crew, as in the grey at Värn. A heartbeat counts itself. He can't bar it.
standing in the middle of the room, the only one of them with no bar over his head, because there was never anything there to bar. Gold. Wagging. Barking, once, very loud.
The office of redacted pages, black bars flying through the lamplight like a flock of crows, and every member of the crew with a black bar over their head where a rank should be, over their names, over their powers. And between them all, unbarred, blazing: gold threads, the tied crew, every one connected to every other, and gold heartbeat-lines running from Kompis through all of them, beating as one.
In the middle, a golden retriever, barking. Kali holding Smurjan's face. Öde holding up her barred arm, and Ysel and Drekk grabbing her other hand.
And facing them, an old man in a grey coat with a pen of black bars in his hand, lowering it, looking at the gold he can't touch, the way a man looks at a fire in a window from out in the snow.
Greed-sight on, the deeper sight from the Greed Codex. Over every soul, an emerald light on the one thing they value most. And over Jorvand, the light sits on one thing: his right hand. The ink-stained hand that wrote the edits.
in Vigolas's coat, swinging away from the crew, toward the old man's hand. And for one heartbeat, Vigolas can't feel his crew through the Knot at all. Alone. (Keystone's price.)
Vigolas moving, unbarred where it counts, his heartbeat in the gold line. An Emerald Knuckle, not at Jorvand's face or chest or the grey in his coat, but at the right hand, the keystone, the one point that holds the man together.
It lands. The hand jerks back. The pen of black bars flies from his fingers and shatters against the shelves into a burst of black confetti. Every bar in the room trembling.
The black bars over the crew's heads flickering, half of them falling away: Kompis's plate back, Rougeina's back, Öde's arm readable again, names coming back into mouths.
flexing his struck right hand, ink and blood on the knuckles, looking at Vigolas with that terrible, loving pride.
the Compass swinging back to his crew, the Knot flooding back into him, gasping with relief at feeling them again.
genuinely stung, for the first time.
reaching inside his grey coat with his left hand, slowly. Taking out a single page, folded, old, soft as cloth.
unfolding: a sheet of the Ledger. At the top, in the Order's script: VIGOLAS. Under it, lines of rank, crossed out. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. (The page from the edge of the world, ch. 150.) And below the eighth crossing-out, one empty line.
white, recognising it.
his book unbarred again, clutched to him, very pale.
drawing a new pen out of the air: not ink, not a quill, but a sliver of pure grey, the colour of the Null, the colour of nothing.
The grey pen poised over the ninth line of the Ledger page, its tip a hair's breadth from the paper, and the old man's voice, very gentle:
