Chapter 220
The white towers on the peak, but the lower third of the mountain grey now, soft-edged, the colour gone out of whole streets. Bells silent. And high above, the floating Archive, its great gates hanging open, and ropes dangling from it: dozens, a hundred, climbing-ropes and grappling lines, with figures swarming up them.
at the Marka's bow, staring up at the swarm, his mouth falling open.
A ragged crowd of raiders on Glasheim's upper stairs: pirates, bounty crews, Codex-hunters, gangs with sacks, all fighting each other for a turn at the ropes.
RANK PLATE ×40: ARCHIVE RAIDER · K-II MARKED · everybody
spotting Vigolas, eyes going wide.
Thieves against the master thief.
Vigolas going through the raiders on the stairs like a man going through doors, Emerald Knuckles, grinning, "I robbed it with a SATCHEL! You brought SACKS!"
Smurjan, the Triple Pulse, three raiders off a rope at once.
Ysel, finding the way in through a side door nobody else saw: "This way. Always this way."
Kompis, Bror's shove, BRA-DOOM, sweeping a whole gang off the stairs into a snowbank, unhurt.
Isa holding the main stair, …ba—, so the crew walks up past a hundred frozen thieves mid-brawl.
trotting up the frozen stair between thieves stopped mid-punch, sniffing their sacks, finding a sausage in one, eating it.
The ring of twelve chairs on the glass floor, the clouds below the glass, the Archive above the glass ceiling. Ten chairs dark. One lit (the First). One with a faint Signet nobody can find a person for (the Fifth). The glass floor dark. The frieze round the walls: eleven carved figures and one black bar, with a fresh crack running under it.
Empty. And above it, at the height of a standing man, hanging in the air, faintly warm: a small square seal of white light. The Twelfth's Signet. Not dark like the others. Lit.
sitting alone in the First Chair, tiny under the great ring, his milk-white eyes turned toward the sound of their boots. He doesn't stand.
in Vigolas's hand, glowing.
Behind the Twelfth Chair, set into the Hall's wall under the black bar of the frieze, a door. Plain black. No handle. No lock. No hinges. The only door in Glasheim no Signet has ever opened.
A small, jagged hollow in the black, shaped exactly like a broken piece of something.
standing before the door, the shard in his hand, hesitating. He looks back at his crew.
The shard sliding home, fitting perfectly, every jagged edge meeting its place. A soft click. Warm light running out from the shard along hairline seams across the whole black door.
The door swinging inward, and beyond it: a long, quiet room, lit by a single lamp that has been burning for three hundred years. Floor-to-ceiling shelves of pages: thousands, every one of them blacked out, line after line struck through with thick, careful black bars, so the walls look like a vast redacted letter. A worn rug. A chair pushed back from a desk, as if someone stood up a moment ago. And on the desk, laid out neatly in a row, seven sheets of the Ledger, each one lit by the lamp, each one headed with the same name in the Order's script:
VIGOLAS.
stepping inside, quiet as people entering a church. Trollmage's Gluttony Codex going completely still against his chest, as if afraid. Ysel stopping in the doorway, not wanting to go in.
at the desk, looking down at the seven sheets. Not touching them.
VIGOLAS. Under the name, a rank in the Order's script, K-V, and through it, one long, patient black line. Beside it, in a smaller, gentler hand, a correction: K-IV.
VIGOLAS. K-IV, struck through with the same patient line. Corrected: K-III.
(The third. The fourth. The fifth. Each one a rank lower. Each one struck by the same hand.)
VIGOLAS. K-I, struck through. Corrected: UNMARKED.
VIGOLAS. UNMARKED, struck through. And then, under it, where the next rank should go, there's nothing lower to write. The gentle hand has written, very small, instead: —
And below that, as if the Ledger itself had rolled over like a counter that goes below zero and comes round the other side, in the Order's own script, enormous: ∞−1
staring at it, understanding, horrified and fascinated at once.
turning from the desk to the doorway, where Hjalmar has come, very slowly, leaning on Isa's arm, his milk-white eyes fixed on the desk he can't see.
laying his inked fingers on the first sheet, running them along the patient black line, the gentle correction. A long, long silence. His face crumpling.
his voice a whisper of turning pages.
in the doorway, arms crossed, the woman who sat across from him and asked, and got silence.
resting on the seventh sheet, on the tiny gentle dash, —, before the ∞−1.
his blind face lifted toward Vigolas, tears running out of milk-white eyes into his white beard.
