at the knot, his fist moving again on the cord, slow as cold honey, his voice dragging.

VIGOLAS

at the floor's edge, enormous, its cathedral of frozen last moments shaking. And out of its body, one by one, the endings stepping down: figures frozen at their last second, peeling off its walls like statues climbing down from a church. A swordsman locked mid-swing. A sailor with his mouth full of sea. A woman with her hand on a closing door. A boy reaching for a falling cup. Grey, still-faced, each one moving only in the pose of its own last instant, walking.

P4CLOSE, the first ending

reaching a held troll at the rail of the stands and touching his shoulder: and the troll finishing, his face completing the moment-just-before, the last line arriving, his body going grey and set and still for good, the way the completion-hunters finished things.

P7SPLASH (double page). THE HEARING.

The Arena floor in slow motion, a battle fought as if underwater: the alliance wading through the stillness against a host of walking endings, grey figures frozen in their last seconds, swords mid-swing and hands mid-reach, closing in from every side on two things: at the centre, the five round a knot of light with the Null netted in it, and in front of the Ring, a small man in a grey coat with his hand raised.

Around them, every ally fighting without letting anything touch them, the lesson of Heartbeat: Rougeina (one hand still on the knot) Swapping endings off into the empty stands; Isa holding a whole rank of them at the top of a beat, her hand pressed to her scarred chest; Lärka's Hush pressing a whole rank of them into silence; trolls hurling finished things, boulders, a dead tree, the endings' own fallen pieces; Iskall's lamp-bearers holding up their lamps, and the endings turning their still faces away from the Look; Svala's white streak cutting through the first thing in her way; Njord, deaf in a silent panel, swinging Sill's oar; Vaka with her hands full of light.

And over it all, the two great words, hanging.

PAGE 6
P8CLOSE, Daniel

out on the floor, hand raised, the stillness up to his knees: his trousers set, his shoes set, his coat-hem frozen in mid-sway. His arm trembling now.

DANIELthrough his teeth, formal
…The appellant calls… · · Exhibit One.
P9CLOSE, Vigolas

at the knot, hearing it, reaching into his sash with his free hand: and coming out with a cube. Black, fist-sized, starlight letters crawling over it. The verdict cube.

VIGOLAS
…Catch, lawyer.

(He throws it. It sails across the floor, slow through the stillness, and drops into Daniel's free hand.)

PAGE 7
P10CLOSE, the verdict cube

in Daniel's palm, held up toward the Arbiter. Crawling across its faces in starlight: ONE MATCH. OF MANY — and after MANY, nothing. A gap where a mark should be.

P11CLOSE, Daniel

his voice carrying across the whole slow battle the way a true thing carries in a quiet court.

DANIEL
…The Arbiter's first sentence. · · Written across the sky over a pirate who'd just been Called. · · ONE MATCH. OF MANY · · · The captain folded its full stop into a box before it could land. · · It's in here.
PAGE 8
P12CLOSE, Daniel

turning the cube so its unfinished line faces the cathedral of endings.

DANIEL
…Your own sentence has no full stop. · · · You can't end a story you never finished writing.
P13CLOSE, the Arbiter

its whole bulk flinching. The walking endings faltering in their stride all across the floor. And on the bark, its letters coming, jagged, fast, the first time its hand has ever looked afraid:

THE ARENA DECIDES. THE ARENA IS NOT DECIDED.

PAGE 9
P14CLOSE, Daniel

the stillness at his waist now, his arm shaking hard, his hand dropping an inch. Two inches. THE END. in the sky dropping with it.

DANIELgasping
…Every court… is decided… · · …by a higher one… · · · That's what an appeal… is…
P15CLOSE, Roffe

in the Ring, seeing the hand drop. Stepping over the gold line without a word. The stillness taking him at once, slowing him to a crawl. He crawls anyway, three huge strides through deep water, and gets one enormous hand under Daniel's elbow. Lifting.

ROFFEslow
…Up… you go.
PAGE 10
P16ACTION, a run of panels: the crew holding the arm.

One after another, out of the Ring, into the stillness, each one slowing, each one getting there: Jeppson, his steady hands round Daniel's wrist. Perne, under Jeppson's arm. Flexsnus, leaning, of course, his shoulder against Roffe's back. Tihi, too short to reach, climbing Roffe like a ship's rigging and sitting on his shoulders to get both hands under Daniel's fingers. A tower of hands, all slowing to stone from the feet up, holding one hand in the air.

THE UP-AGAIN CREWslow, together
…Upp… · · …igen.
P17CLOSE, Daniel

inside the tower of his crew's hands, his own arm held up by six people, looking up at them. Something going across his face that nobody has seen on it before.

DANIELvery quietly
…Objection… sustained.
PAGE 11
P18CLOSE, the stillness on Daniel

climbing past his waist, his chest, his tie, the clean grey wool setting like plaster. Reaching his collar.

P19CLOSE, Krydog

at the Ring, half-held, seeing it. Seeing the gold line two steps behind Daniel. Seeing that Daniel can't take those steps.

KRYDOGslow, grinning, through half a mouth
…When I fall, lawyer… · · · …I fall all the way.
PAGE 12
P20ACTION.

Krydog letting go: the held half of him and the free boot together, toppling like a felled tree, not down onto the bark, but sideways, the whole long patchwork weight of him crashing into the tower of hands and shoving it, Daniel, Roffe, Tihi, all of them, one step back.

WHUMP.
P21CLOSE, Daniel's heel

coming down, through the stillness, on the gold line of the Great Ring: on the rope itself, a sailor's knot under his shoe. Standing on the unbroken line.

mmmmmm
EMMAoff-panel, sharp
…On the line counts as in!
PAGE 13
P22CLOSE, Daniel

on the line, his hand still held high by six people, the stillness at his collar stopping. His eyes closing. Gathering one heartbeat. Choosing, exactly, what to hold in it.

DANIELa whisper
…Now.
P23CLOSE, Daniel's chest

one beat.

ba— (and the beat held open, the DUM not coming, not because it's stopped, but because it's waiting.)

THE STAYED BEAT. Across the whole Arena, for one beat, nothing can be decided. The walking endings' hands stop an inch from every face. The hanging words stop shuddering. Every verdict in the world waits.

PAGE 14
P24CLOSE, Emma

at the knot of the Ring, her staff gripped, every held decision of a whole battlefield pouring into her heart instead of his, because she is keeping it. Her white braid. Her eyelashes going white, one after another, as we watch.

EMMAthrough her teeth
…I've got it. · · · I've got it, Daniel. · · Go on.
P25CLOSE, Daniel

eyes open, turning his head, slowly, inside the held beat, to the only person in the Arena standing outside time altogether: a small old woman by a stump with a book open in her hands.

DANIEL
…The appellant rests. · · · The witness may speak.
PAGE 15
P26CLOSE, Fenna

standing, the book of worth open, her milk-pale eyes on the cube in Daniel's hand, on the hanging words, on the five, on everything being counted. And her lips moving. For the first time in the saga, she is speaking at length.

FENNA
[ ]

(Her balloon is drawn: small, plain, pale grey, no tail decoration, the text sitting a little below where it should, as if heard rather than spoken. And it is empty.)

P27CLOSE, Mingus

sitting at her feet, ears up, listening to every word, his tail going slowly.

(No balloon.)

PAGE 16
P28CLOSE, Daniel

listening to her, inside the held beat. His face, slowly, changing: the face of a man who has spent his life asking courts to listen and is, for once, being listened to. His eyes wet.

P29CLOSE, the Arbiter

listening too. The whole cathedral of last moments utterly still. And then, from somewhere deep inside it, under the frozen endings, in the hollow at its heart, two small figures still moving, mid-blow, a hooded man and a crimson-haired woman, the match it could never decide, slowing.

PAGE 17
P30CLOSE, the Stayed Beat ending.
—DUM.

And every decision that waited landing at once. Except one: the one the beat was held for. The appeal is heard. It is not yet decided.

P31CLOSE, the Arbiter's face.

The ending where a face should be, different for every watcher. And it turns: not on Daniel, not on the five, but outward, on the whole Arena, every stand, every soul, the living and the dead. Its last weapon. The one it never needed before.

PAGE 18 — THE HOOK
P32WIDE, the Arena.

Silence. Total. The moment just before an ending, spread over everything at once: every face in every stand wearing it, the five at the knot wearing it, the crew in their tower of hands wearing it. Not held, this time. Sad. The kind of silence that comes at the end of a story when the last page is about to turn, and everyone knows it, and nobody can stand it. And Daniel, on the line, his hand still up, grey to the collar, a small neat statue holding up a sky.

P33FINAL PANEL, close on Tihi

on Roffe's shoulders, both hands under Daniel's fingers, looking down at his still grey face a foot from hers. The saddest thing she has ever seen. Her face crumpling.
