Chapter 403
The sky above it filled from rim to rim by two black square words, letters as big as islands, beginning to fall.
THE END.
crossing the stands of the dead, the stands of the living, the bare floor. And wherever it passes, the stillness from ch. 373, worse: the moment just before an ending, settling over every face like frost over glass. A troll mid-roar. A lamp-bearer mid-step. Svala frozen mid-perch on a rail. Every face wearing the look of the last line coming.
the stillness reaching them. Vigolas's teeth gritted. Rougeina's eyes open. Smurjan's three voices going silent inside him all at once. Trollmage's hand freezing on the cord. Kompis on one knee. Held. The knot over them steady, the Null caught in it, and the five under it not moving at all.
at Kompis's side, not held. Nothing finishes Mingus. He looks up at the falling words, hackles up. Then at his boy. He licks Kompis's frozen hand.

standing at her stump with the book open, untouched by the stillness: every ending in the world comes to her in the end, and none of them comes for her. Watching.
at the Great Ring, one boot inside the gold line, the rest of him outside. The half of him outside the line held, the moment-just-before on half his face. The boot inside free, stamping.
The calm shade of it: the bark softer, the air still in a good way. And inside it, not held, because inside it nothing can be made to end: Emma kneeling at the knot, her staff planted, her braid white. The Up-Again crew crowded inside the line: Flexsnus, Daniel, Tihi, Roffe, Jeppson, Perne with her one eye. Allies packed in behind them, trolls, refugees, children. And all of them staring out across the gold line at a world gone still.
both hands on the staff, sweat on her lip, every heart in the Ring beating in her time.
held on one knee at the knot. Only his eyes moving: gold, finding, across the whole still floor, one thread that's still live, an emerald one, running to a man in the Ring with a tin under his arm. And his held hand, very slowly, the one part of him that can still move by an inch, sliding into his hood. Pulling out a slip of paper. Holding it up.
FOR SERVICES: ONE (1) NOTCH, ANY RULE, WHEN NEEDED. AMOUNT DUE: COME BACK.
in the Ring, seeing it across the floor. The slow drawl gone out of his face entirely.
turning to Daniel beside him.
a long beat, the tin in his left hand. Then something no one on either crew has seen more than once: he stands up straight. No lean. Feet planted.
his right hand raised toward the falling sky, his voice carrying across the whole still Arena the way a market-trader's voice carries across a square.
The Arena from high above. Across the whole bowl, from rim to rim, through the stands of the dead and the stands of the living, across the bare floor and under the falling words, a thin emerald ruled line: the rule, made visible, the sealed seventh rule of the HADOM Arena, which no one has ever spoken aloud, glowing. And at its near end, in the Great Ring, a slight man in a waistcoat with a tin under his arm, standing straight, his finger and thumb raised pinching it.
And the line, the whole miles-long emerald line, kinking one notch.
the black letters shuddering in their fall, as if something underneath them just shifted its weight.
still pinching the line, his face white with the effort, and the beat that should have closed stretching: the Pinch, a sliver longer than a heartbeat should be, exactly enough room for one more word.
(And in his eyes, for one panel: a second word, ready on his tongue. He swallows it.)
settling with its new notch in it, and running back along itself, through the Ring, and touching every one of them: Flexsnus, Daniel, Tihi, Roffe, Jeppson, Perne, Emma, Krydog's boot; the line of the rule passing through each of them like a thread through beads. Enrolled. The whole crew of the Upp Igen.
a tiny emerald notch-icon appearing.
the lid flipping open on its own. The scratched lines in it. One of them, the oldest open one, NULL, 1 NOTCH. DUE: ?, glowing. And over his head, faint, his own plate, the one plate in the world that moves, sliding up a notch for Tuesday, #9,998, and then something taking the notch away: not bending it back, but uncounting it, the little step simply never having been there.
FLEXSNUS · K-III TESTED · Scalelist #10,000
looking up at the plate. At the round number, fixed, forever. No Tuesdays now.
(He scratches the NULL line through with his thumbnail. The lid shuts.)
beside him, straightening his clean grey coat. Smoothing it. Looking at the gold line of the Ring at his feet, and the still world beyond it.
at the knot, looking up at him. She knows.
grabbing his sleeve with both hands.
Daniel stepping over the gold line, out of the Ring, onto the still floor. The stillness reaching for him at once: his next step slowing, his breath catching. He takes it anyway.
out on the floor among the held, a small neat man in a clean grey coat under a sky full of falling words. Lifting his right hand, palm out, toward the black letters. The way he lifted it on the Docks at thirty, in his new clerk's grey, with the Mirror-Ward's seal coming down on him.
his hand high, his voice not loud but carrying, the way a true thing carries in a quiet court.
THE END. stopping. In mid-fall, a hundred feet above the Arena's rim, the two great words hanging, shuddering, unable to come down another inch, held up by one raised hand.
the black square letters writing themselves, unwillingly, the Arbiter's own hand forced by the rule it just had read out to it:
UNDER REVIEW.
hand raised, perfectly still, chin up. Looking up at the words he's holding off a whole world.
The cloth at the bottom going still. Not grey. Not stone. Finished: the folds stopping mid-sway, set, the way the frozen endings in the Arbiter's body are set. And the stillness, very slowly, climbing.
