Chapter 408
The thinned Null hanging over the Arena like a cloud of smoke with a guttering sunrise in it. And running out of it, taut as a fishing line, so fine it's barely there against the blue sky: one thread, stretching away across the world.
at the knot, his eyes gold and wet, following the thread with them.
beside him, breathing hard.
stepping up beside them. Her crimson hair. Her blade of mirror-steel in her hand, its edge catching the gold of the sunrise in the smoke.
turning to her. The two of them face to face. The same two who fought inside the Arbiter's heart for three sagas without either of them being able to lose.
looking past him, at the other three: Vigolas, Smurjan kneeling as the anchor, Trollmage asleep against him.
reaching up into the air, into the smoke of the Null, closing round the thread. The Lust Codex blazing at his hip. Every thread in the world visible to him, and this one the oldest and loneliest of all. And pulling it taut.
taut in his fist, running out of the Null, across the Arena, out of the world, a line of silver so fine it hums.
closing her eyes. The Envy Codex at her side, unsealed for twenty-seven years, inscribing. Opening.
opening, and in them, four other people: Vigolas, Kompis, Smurjan, Trollmage, reflected, then not reflected: in her.
A woman with crimson hair standing at the centre of the Arena, and for one heartbeat she is all of them: green lightning crawling up her arms (Vigolas's command), gold threads in her eyes (Kompis's reach), a crimson line across a third eye that isn't there (Smurjan's precision, anchored), violet-amber letters floating round her fingers (Trollmage's patience), and her own silver-rose Swap shimmering round her like heat-haze, all five colours burning in one body, and also, at the same time, one colour, the colour of the knot. Her blade raised. Before her, Kompis holding the oldest thread in the world taut across the sky.
In the stands, every face turned to her. Fenna at her stump, the book open, watching.
mirror-steel cut from her mother's mirror, the edge that erases, swung with Vigolas's weight, Smurjan's line, Trollmage's timing, Kompis's aim.
cut. Not snapped. Erased. From the cut point outward, in both directions at once, the silver line simply not being there: out of Kompis's hand, out of the sky, back across the world, back past the first ring, back past the First Count, a thread that was never there for anyone to pull on.
(No SFX. A completely silent panel.)
the four other colours draining out of her, back into the four of them, one by one, until she is only herself again: crimson hair, silver-rose, a blade. Breathing.
going to her heart, where every name she has ever erased sits. And a new weight landing there: not a name. A longing. The only thing the Null ever wanted, cut from the count, and remembered now by exactly one person.
letting go of nothing, his hand empty, turning to her. Seeing the weight land on her.
a long beat, looking at his hand over hers. Not pulling away.
Without its thread, it stops. The smoke of it hanging still over the floor. The sunrise inside it guttering out, gently. Its edges loosening. It doesn't swell. It doesn't push. It turns slowly in the air, the way something turns that has woken up and can't remember where it was going.
curling in on itself, smaller and smaller, the smoke gathering, until it is a patch of not-there the size of a child, curled in the air above the floor, still, quiet, flinching now and then the way a child flinches who has forgotten what it was angry about and only remembers that it was.
trotting out from the knot, to the small curled dark. Not growling. Head low. Tail slow. Sniffing it. Once. Thoroughly.

looking back at Kompis. And barking, once: not a fighting bark, not the bark of the Third Sign. The bark a dog gives when he's found something lost in the long grass and wants you to come and see.
looking at the little curled dark, her blade lowered.
the Pride Codex at her side, mirror-sealed since before she was born, unsealed when she faced her mother, glowing. Knowing exactly where everything fits. And, for the first time, turning that knowing on something that isn't a person.
hearing it, if it can hear. Its plate overhead flickering, the letters changing, once, very faintly:
THE NULL · COUNTED · Scalelist #0 · place: BEFORE
turning, slowly, in the air: toward the centre of the floor. Toward the open door in an old man's chest, where its last tail still runs through like the end of a river through a gate.
drawing the sawn-off shotgun from his hip: birch grip, a whittling knife's blade inlaid in the stock, engraved two boys and a dog, running. Bror. Holding it gently, the way you'd hold a little brother's hand crossing a road.
Bror firing: not a blast. A wide, slow wave of warm gold force, the shot that doesn't want to hurt anyone, rolling out across the floor and reaching the curled dark and nudging it, gently, the way a big brother nudges a smaller one down a path, toward the door.
The Null, small, curled, quiet, drifting on a gold shove through the air toward the centre of the floor. The five standing in a loose ring, watching it go: Vigolas, Kompis with Bror lowered, Rougeina with her hand still on her heart, Smurjan rising from his knees with a sleeping troll-mage in his arms. Mingus trotting alongside the small dark like a dog walking a lost child home.
the allies at the rail, silent, watching it. Tihi with her hands over her mouth. Krydog with his boot in the Ring. Daniel with his grey hand at his chest. Nobody cheering. It doesn't feel like that kind of win.
at the centre of the floor, the open door in his chest, watching the small curled dark drift toward him on a gold wave, with a dog trotting beside it. His kind, tired face. He has known since before he stepped out of nothing what comes next.
The small curled Null reaching the threshold of the door in Jorvand's chest, a golden retriever sitting down beside the old man's feet to watch, and five people who are one standing in a ring around them on the bare bark of the Arena, in the noon light, under an empty black balloon.
