Chapter 109
A low, enormous room of grey lead, ceiling so heavy it sags in the middle. No windows but one. A throne of lead. Ballast lie flat along the walls like rugs.
pushed open. The crew walks in on their feet, bent like Risers, trembling, soaked, upright. Trollmage still snoring over Drekk's shoulder.
rising from his throne, the coat thrown over its back. He doesn't look angry. He looks interested.
glancing at the one window. Far away over the plain, a golden shape the size of a hill is holding up the black clouds.
Tyngd opens his hand, palm down, and the whole hall gets heavier. The crew is slammed back toward their knees. They hold, bent, shaking. Nobody goes down.
The crew attacks with everything they learned, all at once:
Rougeina Swaps with the moth in her jar, light toward heavy, and drops onto Tyngd from above like a hammer.
Smurjan, the Triple Pulse: Sightline, sickle and bite, three strikes in one beat.
Kompis, Shared Beat, lends Drekk his kept line, and Drekk's axe comes in on the one version where it lands.
Kali borrows Rougeina's Swap and hits from the other side.
Tyngd stops every one. A flick of his fingers: Rougeina weighs a mountain in mid-air and stops, hanging. Another flick: the sickle weighs a house and drops. Another: the axe buries itself. Another: the Triple Pulse's three strikes each weigh a cliff and thud into the floor.
and for the first time, a wince. A tremor in his huge shoulders. His knuckles go white.
third eye open, seeing it.
eyes gold, reading Tyngd's threads, which are dense and dark, like lead cables, all bending down into the planet.
grinning slowly through the rain dripping off his hair.
The troll on it opens one violet eye.
Trollmage slides off Drekk's shoulder and lands on his feet, upright, easily, because he has done nothing for three more days and banked every beat. He writes in the air, violet:
MACRO : PEBBLE = 3 DAYS
A storm of pebbles, tens of thousands, every pebble on the plain outside, pours through the window and the doors and hurls itself at Tyngd from every direction.
Tyngd, in the centre of the Leaden Hall, weighs every pebble: tens of thousands of tiny stones each made heavy as a boulder so they drop before they hit him. A carpet of fallen stone builds around his feet. And at the same moment, the same heartbeat:
Rougeina Swaps from moth to moth, a dozen drops from a dozen angles.
Smurjan's Triple Pulse, again and again.
Kompis's Shared Beat lent to Kali, then to Drekk, then to Rougeina, his nose pouring blood.
Drekk swings, Kali swings, the crow dives at his eyes.
Tyngd stops every single one. He weighs every single one. And feels every single one: the panel shows the weights as faint grey ghosts pressing into his body, thousands of them, a mountain range of everything he's stopped, crushing his shoulders, his spine, his knees.
buckling. One knee dips. The lead floor cracks under it. Sweat and rain run down his face.
Tyngd roars and throws one hand toward his throne. The coat, the midnight-green coat with 36 shards, lifts off the throne and flies at Vigolas, and as it flies Tyngd makes it weigh his whole world.
The coat lands on Vigolas's shoulders. It weighs Tyngden: the whole crushing planet in a sailor's coat. The floor under Vigolas craters. His knees bend. Down. Down. His face twists. He's going to be ground into the lead.
panting, triumphant.
bent almost double, the coat crushing him, his knees an inch from the floor. Inside his chest, his heart stops for one beat. The panel goes still.
emerald, the gold rings flaring. Every action but one.
He looks down at his knees, an inch from the floor. Then up at Tyngd.
They stop. An inch from the lead. They will not bend any further. They can't. He's given it up for the rest of the fight.
And Vigolas stands up. With a world on his shoulders, the whole weight of Tyngden in a sailor's coat, he straightens. Slowly. Every muscle shaking. Lightning crawling up the Lichtenberg scar on his arm. He doesn't bend, because he can't.
The crew, the Ballast on the walls and Tyngd himself all stare. A coatless pirate, now coated, standing fully upright under a planet.
walking forward. One step. The floor cracks. Another. He's walking toward the Heavy King with a world on his back, and he's grinning again.
staring, and the thousands of weights he has stopped this fight are pressing into him, and the world's weight he just threw is pressing into him too, because he moved it. His other knee buckles.
Vigolas stops in front of him, standing straight in his coat, which weighs a world. Tyngd, the Heavy King, General of the Order, the only man who has ever walked upright on Tyngden, goes down. Both knees. Onto his own floor. On his own world.
A pirate standing. A king kneeling. Rain on both of them through the one window, and far away over the plain a golden bear still holding up the sky.
