Freystjarn Halvorsen
FREYSTJARN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Nine, Keeper of the Collars (ch. 130). No Scalelist number.
Look
- Build & height: 2.25 m, huge and stooped; he ducks under every lintel. Heavy shoulders, a smith's back bent by centuries over an anvil.
- Face: broad, heavy, gentle; bruise-dark rings under his eyes from centuries without a whole night's sleep. "Tired, kind, terrible." (ch. 130) In ch. 131, tears running into the soot on his face.
- Hair: grey-black, thick, pushed back with a sooty hand; a short grizzled beard.
- Eyes: dark, heavy-lidded, always on the edge of closing and never allowed to.
- Skin & sin-mark: a smith's scarred forearms, black with soot. No sin is shown: his law is an office. The Signet on the back of his right hand. When he leaves the chair it lifts off nothing, flickers, and goes dark by leaving, not by death (ch. 133).
- Clothing, layer by layer: a white Architect's robe, its hem grey with ash · a leather apron over the robe · a broad belt hung with collars, like a jailer's keys, white iron with locks shaped like the eye of the Order · heavy boots. At the end: no apron, no collars, no keys. "Just a huge, stooped, tired man in a white robe."
- Signature item: the collars on his belt, and the humming.
- Movement: slow, heavy, careful, the way a big man moves in a room full of breakable things. He hums while he works and while he fights; his hands barely move. 130).
- Voice: deep, soft, a lullaby voice. "Hush." His balloons are wide and low, with music notes drifting out of them; when he hums the lullaby backwards, the notes and letters are drawn reversed: …hsuh, hsuh, hsuh…
- Variant looks: The Collar-Smith (ch. 130–131: in the study door, collars closing out of the air at each note). Meeting them (ch. 131 splash: the room crowded with the faint figures of everyone he ever collared, all asleep, all straining gently at white iron). Unburdened (ch. 133: walking down the stair-street with empty hands). Asleep (ch. 133 splash: on his back in the snow under a pine, hands folded on his chest, snow on his face).
Power
He hums, and a collar of white iron closes out of the air around a throat or wrist, with a lock shaped like the eye of the Order. The sin under it dims to an ember and sleeps.
- The law: every collar that holds a sin down. The tool: the collars. Every Sentinel wears one at the throat: the Order's leash on its own soldiers.
- The lullaby itself makes a room drowsy: the crew sway and yawn, the fire dims, the barking furniture of the study goes quiet (ch. 130).
- In his Forge he can collar anything that burns: a sin, a fire, a storm, a scream.
- A collar holds a sin, never a will.
- SFX: the hum mmmmm… hush, hush, hush; a collar closing KLIK; the Breaking: KRAK, everywhere at once.
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 5,600.
- Home tempo: the Collar Forge, the soot-black workshop in Glasheim's foundations, full of tools older than the Order.
- Heartbeat technique: THE ONE NOTE. He hums a single note between two heartbeats, and in that gap a collar has already closed, and every heart in earshot slows for a beat toward sleep. No one else's power arrives as a lullaby inside one beat.
- Burn cost (HADOM OVERFLOW): every collar in the world holds by his attention, so he cannot sleep. When he dreams, collars flicker all over the world. This is the slowest overflow in the saga: not one beat too many, but every beat for centuries holding more collars than any heart can count. "I haven't slept a whole night in centuries. Did you know that?" (ch. 131) The Breaking was the beat finally let go.

|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Lullaby | A hummed note, a collar, a sin asleep | Attention, forever | Ch. 130 |
| The Yawn | The lullaby in a room: everyone drowsy, fires dim | — | Ch. 130 |
| The One Note | 4: a collar inside one beat | Sleep | Ch. 130–131 |
| Collar-Round | One note per fighter, down a whole crew | — | Ch. 131 (Vigolas, Kali; fails on Smurjan and Kompis) |
| The King-Collars | Harbour-sized white-iron collars on Brygdar's stone troll-kings, so they would never wake to guard the Library again | — | Backstory, 300 years ago (ch. 135) |
| Laying Down | Sets his collars down on a desk, one by one | His office | Ch. 131 |
| THE BREAKING | Hums the lullaby backwards: every collar in the world breaks at once | The chair | Ch. 132 (hook) – 133 |
The price
Every collar in the world holds by his attention, so he cannot sleep. He has not slept a whole night in centuries. He is the most tired soul in the saga, holding millions of sleeping sins awake in himself, and for most of his life he thought it was kind: "…I thought it was kind. Asleep. I thought I was letting them rest." (ch. 131)
Weaknesses
- A collar holds a sin, never a will. Rougeina, collared, sinless, keeps walking: "A collar holds a sin. It doesn't hold me." / "…No. It never does, does it. It only holds the sin. The person keeps walking. They always keep walking." (ch. 131)
- The book. Codex-written sins crack his collars (Smurjan) or won't let them close (Kompis).
- The seam in every collar.
- Meeting them. Kompis, collared but still Kompis, took all of Freystjarn's iron threads at once and tied them with the Knot to the people at their ends: "Mister Freystjarn. You should meet them." For the first time in centuries he felt them all back: a Sentinel boy who wanted to be a baker, collared at fourteen; an old woman whose Gluttony was a love of cooking for strangers; a prisoner whose Wrath was only ever about her sister. "They're all so tired of sleeping." (ch. 131)
- How he was "beaten": he wasn't. He turned. "Nothing. For the first time in a very long time, I'm going to do nothing."
Gear & companions
- The collars (white iron, Order's-eye locks) and the leather apron.
- The Collar Forge (Glasheim's foundations).
- Every Sentinel in the Order's service (SENTINEL · K-II MARKED), each with his collar at the throat, until ch. 133.
How they fight
He puts the fight to sleep. He opens by humming in the doorway (everyone yawns), then closes one collar per note on the most dangerous sin in the room, loud ones first ("The storm. Hush."). He never lifts a hand; he never needs to. Council combo: Freystjarn + Edvar (ch. 130–131): "If you'd just hold her still—": the collar stops the Swap, the slip delivers the soul.
Personality
- Wants: sleep. And, under that, for what he did to have been kind.
- Fears: waking up to what he did; flickering collars.
- Contradictions: a jailer who sings lullabies; the gentlest power on the Council and the one that held the most people down; the only Architect who left his chair by lying down.
- Humour: a slow, tired honesty: "The quorum's held by seven tired people and a teapot, Edvar."
- Habits: hums while he works; counts collars on his belt by touch.
- Alone: stands at the anvil, not sleeping, listening to the world's collars hum back.
Relationships
- Edvar: his colleague; he laid his collars down on Edvar's desk and walked away from him.
- Kompis: the man who made him meet everyone he collared, bleeding from the nose and ears with both ends of a thousand collars going through him. "Then maybe they should."
- Rougeina: the woman who kept walking. "You won't have to cross me off, girl. I'm leaving the chair. It counts the same." / "…Thank you."
- Vigolas: "Where are you going?" / "Down. Then out. Somewhere with snow and no one to hold."
- Mingus: "Lucky dog."
- Smurjan & Kali: one collar cracked, one held.
- Brygdar's stone kings and Trollmage: his King-Collars broke in the Breaking; the kings opened their eyes and the horn sounded for the heir (→ Arc 8).
- Ingrith: "Freystjarn was tired. I'm never tired." Rougeina offered her his way out (ch. 143), and she refused it.
- Hjalmar: counted the dark chairs after him: "Six. Six. Seven are needed. …Nobody is steering."
Story so far
- III · The Architect War, Arc 7 (ch. 130–133): arrives humming in Edvar's study and collars the crew (ch. 130–131), is tied by Kompis to everyone he ever collared, sets his collars down, hums the lullaby backwards (ch. 132), and every collar in the world breaks (ch. 133). Leaves the chair. Walks out of Glasheim into the snow and lies down under a pine: "…There. Now I'm the one asleep."
- What broke: THE BREAKING. Sentinels drop their spears and touch their throats; prisoners' marks blaze; suppressed sins wake everywhere ("…It's warm.", a Sentinel captain); Brygdar's stone kings open their eyes. The quorum breaks: six sit. Nobody is steering.
