Ingen → Någon
Look
- Build & height: 1.76 m, lean, unremarkable, a body nobody's eye stops on. Barefoot.
- Face: calm and plain (ch. 69), polite, unreadable; the kind of face you forget while you're looking at it. In ch. 72 it "does something it hasn't done in years": it doesn't know what to do.
- Hair: brown, cropped short by somebody else's hand, uneven at the back.
- Eyes: mild grey-brown, steady, never greedy.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a plain grey shirt too big for him (borrowed; given away to a mushroom child in ch. 74) · plain trousers whose pockets hang turned inside out, like two little white flags · nothing else. No belt, no pack, no weapon, no shoes.
- Signature item: the inside-out pockets. In ch. 74 he turns them the right way out, looks at them, empty, and after a moment turns them inside out again. Habit.
- Movement: unhurried, almost gentle. He doesn't block; he takes a blow in an open hand, turns with it, and gives it back. He walks out of fights the same way he walked in.
- Voice: polite, quiet, short sentences. "Here. Yours." is said the way a clerk returns a dropped glove. His balloons have wide white margins, very little in them.
- Variant looks: The hole (Greed-sight POV, ch. 69, 72: a grey man-shaped cut-out, "as if someone had cut a person out of the picture with scissors"). Lit (ch. 72: the hole glowing gold "like a candle seen through paper", one point brighter at the centre of his chest). Folded (ch. 72: a dice-sized cube in Vigolas's palm, "a barefoot man with his pockets inside out, and a name"). Shirtless in the rain (ch. 74: he has given the shirt away).
Power
He owns nothing, so nothing can be taken from him, and everything you give him, he gives back.
- Greed-sight can't see him. It shows what a thing is worth to someone, and he is worth nothing to anyone: a man-shaped hole (ch. 69). "…Where'd you go?" / "I'm right here."
- COMPACT can't fold him. The fold closes around him and comes up full of dirt and air; he is still standing outside it (ch. 69, 72).
- He gives back every blow. He catches Rougeina's blade by the flat in mid-swing and presses it back into her palm, point-first at her own throat ("Here. Yours."). He takes the Emerald Knuckle in an open hand and turns Vigolas's own weight into Vigolas's own jaw. A column of green fire "thick as a tree" is turned down into the soil at Vigolas's feet (ch. 69, 72). Five Ledger-chains wrap their own guards (ch. 74).
- Nobody looks at him. During the Manticore's splash he walks up the gangplank, lifts the coat off the captain's shoulders, and walks away: "Nobody looked at him. Nobody ever does." (ch. 71)
- He tastes of nothing. Bakasura bites him, works his jaws "like a man trying to taste water", and spits him out unhurt: "…Nothing." / "Sorry." (ch. 71)
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 70.
- Home tempo: wherever no one is looking: the blind side of a crowd, the far edge of a battle, a field after everyone has gone.
- Heartbeat technique: HERE. YOURS. Inside one heartbeat he receives a blow and returns it to its owner on the same beat it was thrown: the attacker's heart hasn't finished the beat before their own force lands on them. No one else gives a blow back before it is over. (Not Bali's RETURN: Bali sends powers home through a mirror; Någon hands force home with his hands.)
- Burn cost (HADOM OVERFLOW): he can't hold anything, not even a blow, so under burn whatever passes through his hands must leave within the beat. Seventy returns a beat is his ceiling. The seventy-first has nowhere to go: it stays, and lands on him. Short of that, his palms bruise, and (his price again) the bruises leave him by tomorrow too. He can't even keep his scars.
Techniques
| Technique | What it does | Cost | First shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing to Take | Passive: invisible to Greed-sight, outside every fold | Being worth nothing to anyone | Ch. 69 |
| Here. Yours. | 4: a blow given back to its owner | The overflow ceiling | Ch. 69 |
| Point-First | Catches a blade and returns it point to its owner's throat | — | Ch. 69 (Rougeina) |
| The Turned Column | Takes a blast by the wrist and hands it into the ground at the thrower's feet | — | Ch. 69, 72 (Vigolas) |
| Unseen | Walks through a fight unnoticed, because nobody looks at a man worth nothing | — | Ch. 71 (the coat) |
| Tasteless | Bitten, he is spat out: there's nothing in him to eat | — | Ch. 71 (Bakasura) |
| Five Chains Back | Catches five Ledger-chains at once and wraps each guard in his own: the first time he fights for someone | "…Heavy." | Ch. 74 |
The price
Whatever he takes, or is given, he must give away within a day. (ch. 69) "Until tomorrow it's mine. Then it's someone else's. Nothing's anybody's for long." (ch. 72) That's why he wouldn't take the coat until he needed to deliver it, and why Aldhrun sent him: "I can't keep either of them, sir." / "I know. That's why I'm sending you." (ch. 69) The rule's one gap is the whole of his arc: worth isn't in his hands. It lives in whoever holds it. (ch. 72) A day after Vigolas named him, he had tried to give his shirt to a mushroom child, his breakfast to a crow and his name to the rain, and: "It's still here." (ch. 74)
Weaknesses
- Being valued. Vigolas stopped trying to take and gave: "You're worth something to me." / "Take it back." / "Can't. It isn't in your pocket, pal. It's in mine. …And I'm greedy. I don't give back what I've given." (ch. 72) From that moment Greed-sight sees him and COMPACT grips him.
- Thread-sight. Kompis sees what he is: dozens of cut threads, every cut made by the same hand, his own (ch. 72).
- A name. "'Ingen.' That's 'no one' in the old tongue, right? …Not calling you that. You're Någon. It means someone."
- How he was beaten (ch. 72): he won ch. 69 cleanly; in the rematch Vigolas gave him worth and a name, and then folded him: "Now hold still. This is going to feel like being kept." COMPACT caught him for the first time; the coat fell out of the fold into Vigolas's hand.
Gear & companions
How they fight
He doesn't attack. He returns. He walks into your path with open hands and lets you hit him, and everything you throw comes home to you. The harder you hit, the worse it goes for you ("It doesn't matter how hard you hit, Captain. Everything you give me, I give back."). He finishes nothing: he walks away when he has done what he was sent to do. Bastion use (ch. 69–71): the Order's perfect courier for something it wants delivered: he can't keep it, so he must bring it in within a day.
Personality
- Fears: having something again.
- Contradictions: a deserter who never wanted anything; a thief of the greatest coat in the realm who meant only to give it away; a man with no name who answers politely to any.
- Humour: quiet, accidental ("Sorry.", walking out of Bakasura's mouth picking slime off his pockets).
- Habits: sits with his hands open in his lap, palms up, "as if he's waiting for someone to put something in them" (ch. 69); turns his pockets inside out.
- Alone: sits on a rock in the rain and looks at his own open hands "as if they're holding something heavy" (ch. 74).
Relationships
- Vigolas: the greedy man who gave him the one thing he can't give away. "Me too." (a hole). A whole gold thread between them. "You're coming with me, Someone."
- Kompis: the POV of his turn; the Nursery ties them ("…The Nursery.").
- Rougeina: he put her own blade to her throat; she read Bastion Four on his plate and alone knew why.
- Bakasura: "…Nothing." / "Sorry."
- Aldhrun: "Report, Ingen. The coat. The captain." / "…That's not my name."
- The Twin Clerks: "Ingen! The sled!"
Story so far
- II · The Call, Arc 5 (ch. 69–76): debuts as the Bastion's hole, beats Vigolas with his own fists (ch. 69), walks off with the coat (ch. 71), is given worth and a name and folded (ch. 72), unfolded, refuses the Bastion and the name Ingen, fights for someone for the first time ("Here. Yours."), and walks off toward the mushroom forests to learn to carry it (ch. 74). Lifts one hand from a far hill as the Marka leaves (ch. 76).
- III–IV: off the page. On paper still one of the Bastion "Four".
