Tövind
TÖVIND · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #1,090 · Prior of the Thaw (ch. 172).
Look
- Build & height: 1.88 m, tall and gaunt (ch. 172). By the end of the arc the same frame is stooped and thin inside a coat that hangs off him (ch. 177).
- Face: young: twenty-six, high cheekbones, dark, sleepless circles under grey eyes. Polite, serene, a priest's face. As he spends himself, it ages panel by panel: grey at the temples (ch. 176), crow's feet, a stoop, silver hair, then seventy, eighty, white-haired, lined. "Only his eyes are young: grey and astonished." (ch. 176)
- Hair: close-cropped black, greying in one panel, white by the end.
- Eyes: grey, calm, clear; the one thing that never ages.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a plain shirt · a Timekeeper's long brass-buttoned coat, the gear-badge torn off the breast, leaving a pale circle in the cloth · a glassless pocket-watch on a chain, its hands spinning freely · bare hands, always.
- Signature item: the glassless pocket-watch with loose, spinning hands. At the end he closes it and puts it in his pocket (ch. 177).
- Movement: unhurried, courteous, "walking normally, inside a hold where nothing should move." Inside a hold he moves in ticks: touches his own chest (tick, a tiny spark of light), takes one step, touches it again.
- Voice: "gentle and precise, like a priest reading out the hours" (ch. 172). Never raised. Balloons are round, with a single tick-mark at the top like a clock's twelve, and his "tick" sits outside the balloon in small italics.
- Variant looks: The hand (ch. 171: an old hand on a young wrist, laid on a frozen wave). Prior (ch. 172: bowing to a frozen girl: "Good morning, Stilla. You're late."). Rapt (ch. 175: on the whale's back, the ice clock-face in one old palm and the two brass hands in the other, lifting them together). Spent (ch. 176: an old man in a young man's coat, every blow in the world waiting an inch from him). Kept (ch. 177: sitting on the ice, wrapped in his coat, closing the watch).
Power
Whatever he touches catches up on the time it skipped.
- Through a hold: he thaws himself, one tick at a time, and walks through Isa's stopped world (ch. 172–176).
- On blows: he thaws an incoming strike so it catches up on itself and spends its force in a burst of dust (the Triple Pulse; "even so, the third strike lands", ch. 172).
- The threat: a palm an inch above Grandmother Vinter, the oldest ice-whale: "She's held a thousand years under that ice. A thousand years, all at once. She'd be bones before she finished her song." One square yard of her goes grey and old under his hand (ch. 175).
- SFX: tick (a self-thaw); the gull's feathers fffff; a held wave released KRRRASSHH; a bullet rusting tssh.
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 310.
- Home tempo: anywhere time has been stopped: inside someone else's stillness, where he is the only thing that ticks.
- Heartbeat technique: THE OWED TICK. Inside one held heartbeat (Isa's, or anyone's) he thaws himself by exactly one tick and moves one step through stopped time. Then he pays, and ticks again. No one else walks through someone else's frozen moment a tick at a time.
- Burn cost (HADOM OVERFLOW): he ages with everything he thaws, a little each time, and every tick through a hold costs him time. His overflow isn't a burst but a bill: in the longest hold of Isa's life he ticked until he'd spent more years than he had: "…You made me spend it. All of it. On time." (ch. 176) One more tick and he would have died of old age inside a single heartbeat.

The price
He ages with everything he thaws. He was twenty-six with an old man's hands (Saga IV beats), and the age-line climbed from his hands to his jaw in five chapters. He knew: "Everyone is. I'm just on time." (ch. 175) And under the price, the grief: he wound Otur's clocks every night for nine years, and when she died, every appointment on Urverket was cancelled: "Do you know what it is to wake up in a world where nothing is owed?" (ch. 175) One thread, "very thin and very old", runs from his heart into the glassless watch.
Weaknesses
- Making him pay. Isa held the longest hold of her life ("I'll hold it. You move."), and every tick he took to walk through it cost him years, until he had none to spare (ch. 176).
- The unthawable: Vigolas, crawling through the syrup of the hold "an inch a panel", fist cocked for two minutes; Mingus sitting down in front of Isa.
- Distraction inside the hold: Rougeina Swapped with the hour hand in his fist, and he found a frozen woman there instead ("…Clever."); Öde held the hour hand; Kompis's Subtick inside the hold found the sliver where his grab missed.
- Trollmage: MACRO : FROST = THEIR BRAZIERS (ch. 173); MACRO : SLEEP = GRANDMOTHER VINTER (ch. 176), and the grey patch from his palm stopped spreading.
- How he was beaten (ch. 176): surrounded by blows that were waiting (four guns an inch from his fingers, a scythe an inch from his wrist, a frozen assassin at his shoulder, a pirate's fist an inch from his jaw), he understood, stopped ticking, and the hold released: —DUM. Everything lands in one beat. The Four-Gun Volley tore the ice face from his grip, Öde's scythe flicked the minute hand away, and Vigolas's fist arrived: KRAKOOM. "…I was on time. For once in my life, I was exactly on time."
Gear & companions
- The glassless pocket-watch.
- The Thaw Cult (THAW-BROTHER · K-II MARKED · ex-Timekeeper): gear-badges cut off, ticking brass neck-bells, braziers on bow-chains, heat-lances; sails painted with a clock with every hour struck out except NOW. Creed: "Everything is owed its time." Their fleet withdrew; they hunt Stilla again in Saga V.
- The clock's two brass hands (hour and minute), prised out of the ice beside Grandmother Vinter's eye (ch. 174). Vigolas later COMPACTed them into a die and gave it to Isa (ch. 177).
How they fight
A collector of debts. He walks calmly through everyone else's stillness, touching things as he passes, and the world catches up around him: waves crash, gulls die, bruises heal, blows burn out. He goes straight for the one thing that matters (the clock), threatens what the defender loves (the whale), and waits. Cult combo: Tövind + the Thaw-Brothers: braziers melt the ground under a holder who can't move (one slip ends it), and the Prior walks through whatever she still holds.
Personality
- Wants: for everything to be owed its time, because if nothing is owed, "nothing means anything."
- Fears: a world where nothing is due, which is the world Otur's death left him in.
- Contradictions: a man who wants every debt of time paid, spending his own life to collect; a priest of punctuality who walked through a thousand-year stillness without hurrying; he hurt no one he didn't think was owed it ("I don't want to hurt anyone, Isa. I want what's owed.").
- Humour: gentle, priestly, faintly absurd ("Excuse me.", after thawing an assassin's arm).
- Habits: touches his chest before each step; checks the glassless watch out of habit, though its hands only spin.
- Alone: listens to the watch that can't tell him anything.
Relationships
- Isa: the girl he called late; "She stole a thousand years from this island." She made him pay; afterwards she told him what waiting on Stilla means: "Your few years… will last a long time, here."
- Otur: his empress and his clocks. "You unwound me."
- Vigolas: the man with nothing to thaw. Afterwards: "You wanted everything on time. How about you just have some? Time. Yours."
- Mingus: "…you're what everything else is counted in."
- Rougeina: the hour hand that turned into a frozen woman in his fist.
- Öde, Kompis, Drekk, Smurjan: the scythe on the minute hand; a healed bruise; a week of beard; the Triple Pulse thawed to dust ("…Fine. I'm not here for you.").
- Trollmage: frosted his braziers; put the whale back to sleep.
- Grandmother Vinter: the whale he threatened with a thousand years.
- The Still Folk: the whale-singers who move one step a minute, who now hold him while he waits.
- Krydog: a power like Tövind's would drop years of owed sleep on him at once.
