none ever drawn (dead before the story; in the stands of the dead the plates don't show).

Look

  • Build & height: broad, weathered, strong; a sea-captain's stance, feet apart.
  • Face: "a face like a walnut that laughed": brown, deeply lined, crinkled at the eyes; a gap tooth; a scar through one eyebrow (from a block on Hallbard's jetty at Fyren).
  • Hair: two grey braids.
  • Eyes: sharp, amused.
  • Clothing: a captain's sea-coat; in the stands of the dead, drawn without colour like all the dead, with the drowned crew in old black-sail coats.
  • Signature item: the wheel of the Camilla the Seraphim.
  • Movement: arms folded (the dead in ch. 380); one hand on the wheel (memory).
  • Voice: big and amused; she calls him "boy".
  • Variant looks: The dock (Vigolas six, a stolen apple, Hild laughing) · At the wheel of the Camilla · In the stands of the dead (grey, arms folded, unreadable) · The nod (ch. 410).

Personality

Laughing, blunt, fair; the kind of captain who takes in a thief because he's six and hungry.

Relationships

  • Vigolas: the boy she took off the dock; the captain who left his crew on the wrong side of the rail, and carried them back over it.
  • Ture: the gangly gap-toothed boy, his first crewmate, beside her in the stands.
  • Hallbard: the keeper who lit the Camilla and was waved at.
Story so far
  • III (ch. 90): her face taken by REMOVE.
  • IV: her face on Levla's stall; restored at Skatt (Arc 8). The ship's name bought back (ch. 155, 159).
  • VI · ch. 380: in the stands of the dead with the drowned first crew, arms folded, unreadable: Vigolas, to himself: "Nobody gets left on the wrong side of the rail. I left all of you there."
  • VI · ch. 386: called down by Rule Five; Vigolas carries her over Emma's rope on her own rule.
  • VI · ch. 410: the nod, a captain's that'll do. "Aye, captain."
