The Unspoken

The Twenty-Fifth Rune
"…You're tired. I can finish it." (always in your own voice)
Worldthe Heartwood, the world inside Ferdinand
RoleANTAGONIST
First appearsSaga V, Arc 7 · The Heartwood: the whisper, ch. 300; on the page with its plate, ch. 303

an empty plate. Drawn once (ch. 303): the frame of a rank plate hanging over the groove, with nothing on it: no name, no rank, no number, not even a dash. The board has nothing to write.

Look

  • Build & height: none. It has no body. It is a groove of nothing in the grain of the wood: a long stripe where the wood goes smooth and grey, sliding through floors, columns, ribs and banks the way a crack runs through ice. It can be a finger wide or as long as a ring-gallery.
  • Face: none, ever. Where it passes, the grain-lines bend round it like water round a stone, and the sap-light dims over it and comes back behind it.
  • Shape: in the wood it is almost a rune: three strokes that keep trying to settle and never do, like a word on the tip of the tongue.
  • Carved (what it wants to be): END, three strokes. A long cut straight down (ch. 307: three fathoms through the blank space after the twenty-fourth rune) · a short bar across it near the top (ch. 310: notched in by the Finished's closed mouths pressed to the Wall in a line) · a point below them (ch. 311–312: a round, fist-sized hole of grey nothing in the grain). Daniel: "A sentence. It needs its full stop."
  • Skin & mark: none. The wood it touches is the only mark: grey, smooth, finished, like driftwood.
  • Clothing: none.
  • Signature item: the grey, cracked, tailless balloon, and the blank space at the end of the Rune Wall where the grain swirls, its place.
  • Movement: patient, sliding, never hurried. It doesn't chase; it arrives, under whoever is most tired.
  • Voice: it has none of its own. It speaks only in the listener's own voice at its most tired. Lettering rule (binding): the listener's own balloon style, drawn grey, with a hairline crack, and no tail: it comes out of the wood. When it is pleading with a strong soul it sags (Krydog's flat base sagging, ch. 303, 309–310). After a stroke is carved it can PULL: then its balloons turn jagged and bold, an order (SAY IT.), and inside Emma's ring the bold drains out of them (ch. 309).
  • Variant looks: The Whisper (a grey stripe in the grain beside a tired head) · The Offer (one long branching groove through the whole bowl, a grey balloon beside everyone at once, ch. 305 splash) · The Sliver (coiled like a seed in a half-Finished mouth, ch. 306) · The First Stroke (a black cut welling cork, ch. 307) · The Bar (a row of notches under pressed grey mouths, ch. 310) · The Point (a fist of nothing sinking through the deep wood, ch. 311–312) · Sealed (a dark knot of a hundred rings in the floor of the world, where Runa's braid grows in, ch. 312).

Power

It offers to finish whatever you are tired of. In your own voice. Owning nothing, counting, carrying names, holding still, feeling every thread, standing up: anything.

  • Every offer is real, and so is every refusal. It never lies: everything it says about the price of rest is true (it told Krydog exactly what his long sleep will cost, ch. 310).
  • THE FINISHED: whoever says yes becomes grey wood: smooth, peaceful, caught mid-gesture, completed. Every Finished body ends at the mouth in a small closed point, like a full stop (Smurjan's third eye, ch. 303). There are hundreds in the ring-galleries, from every age. The Bark Monks robe them and write their names when they know them.
  • IT RIDES SLEEPERS: it whispers into the wood, and a sleeper on the wood cannot say no. Most of the Finished were Finished in their sleep (Runa, ch. 306).
  • IT NEEDS ONE MOUTH: to be carved it must be spoken aloud inside the tree, by a mouth. A rune is cut where it is spoken. Once all three strokes are cut, the tree has an end.
  • ONCE A STROKE IS CARVED, IT PULLS: with a foothold in the wood, it no longer only asks; lips start shaping it unasked (ch. 309). That is compulsion, so Emma's Sanctuary stops it.
  • WHEN IT IS CARVED, FERDINAND BLEEDS CORK (inside; first time on the page, ch. 307), and his heart tries to beat every beat it has left at once (the HADOM overflow of a world: ba-ba-ba— with no DUM). Every heart inside the tree stutters with his.
  • What it can't do:
    • Cross rowan. A Rowan Ward (rowan-runes in a ring), a ring of people who each speak ROWAN (ch. 311), the rowan's own roots (ch. 312). It goes under a ring drawn on a floor, never across it.
    • Reach the deaf. Tihi, deaf until spring, never hears it (ch. 305 splash).
    • Ride a sleeper inside Emma's circle, or make anyone inside her Sanctuary speak it. But nobody can stop it asking ("That's not making.", ch. 306), and the Finished are not made: they said yes, and choices survive her line (ch. 309).
    • Touch Mingus. It goes round him like water round a rock (ch. 303). He's not tired of anything.
    • Be borrowed (Kali), bent, threaded (Kompis: "No threads. Not even to itself."), or appealed (Daniel never appeals a choice: "That's what a choice is.").
    • Be ended. Any ending inside the tree is a stroke of it (Runa, ch. 307, 311). ERASE or DESPAWN would write it. It can only be sealed: made unspoken again.
    • Act outside Ferdinand except through his wood (the roots reach nine realms; it has never been shown speaking outside).
    • Speak itself. It needs someone else's mouth. Always.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: none. It has no heart, so nothing to count with and nothing to overflow.
  • Home tempo: the Heartwood, where any rune spoken aloud is real.
  • Heartbeat technique: THE LAST BEAT. When a stroke of END is carved into a heart's wood, that heart tries to beat every beat it has left in one: Ferdinand's stutter (ch. 307), the crack of light in the floor, the DUM that never comes. No one else forces another heart to spend its whole future at once.
  • Burn cost: none to itself. It costs the tree cork, and the people who hold it shut their years: Runa's hundred rings, Emma's 2,074 grey strands.

The SliverA piece of it stays in a half-Finished mouth, and is carried wherever the body goes, inside any Ward—Ch. 300–306 (Abbe, Finished mid-nod as Mingus barked, carried inside the Ward at Runa's word)
The First StrokeThe long cut, carved where a mouth shapes itFerdinand bleeds corkCh. 307
The PullWith a stroke carved, mouths start shaping it unaskedStopped inside Emma's SanctuaryCh. 309

The PointThe last stroke, un-carved: sinks below any ring drawn on any floor and runs through the whole tree looking for one mouth; climbs Runa's braid, the one way into her that isn't rowan—Ch. 311–312

The price

It pays nothing; it is a price. Every yes is permanent: the Finished stay Finished (fate open). Its one true limit is the shape of its hunger: it can't say itself. It needs a tired mouth, and it waits for one. Sealing it cost Runa a hundred growth rings (ch. 308–312): she aged from a troll woman in her strong years to a very old one, and a hundred leaves fell in every realm.

Weaknesses

  • HOLD, the twenty-fourth rune, cut last on purpose so that anything after it has to get past it (ch. 302). Spoken as a Heartwood Beat it pins the point anywhere in the tree, and the tree grows a ring of new wood round it: a ring for a ring (ch. 312).
  • ROWAN: it can't cross a ring of rowan, even a ring of fools (ch. 311).
  • REST: the arc's answer. "Rest has a morning in it." END has none. Rougeina, offered END, chose rest and slept lying down (ch. 306).
  • Refusals that work (ch. 305): counting (Drekk: "I'll stop when it comes out right.") · names said aloud (Öde) · a hand on a dog (Kompis: "I like the noise.") · a full belly (Bakasura: "…Full.") · a laugh, which is movement, which breaks a stillness it was finishing (Isa) · having chosen already (Svala: "I did land.") · wanting to know where the dark is (Vigolas).
  • Emma's Sanctuary (sleepers can't be ridden; nobody can be made to speak it) · Smurjan's Sightline (the one grain where the cut began) · Trollmage's MACRO : HOLD = 1 SEASON (Gluttony I: Runa's rune held whole and cast at no cost to her) · Kompis's Knot (Runa feels where it goes before it gets there) · Vigolas's Minus One, "I give up finishing" (so it can't bait him into ending it, ch. 312) · Mingus.
  • The deaf: Tihi, until spring.

Gear & companions

  • The Finished: hundreds of grey-wood statues in the ring-galleries, every age and order (a knight with his helmet under his arm, a woman with her hand at her brow, a child mid-yawn, a Trisdel Sentinel, a troll with a lantern, Bark Monks mid-copy). After the first stroke they walk, peacefully, to the Wall, to be its mouths. They can't be made to stop and must not be broken ("They were people."). After the seal they stand still where they stopped (fate open).
  • ABBE: a fisher-boy of about thirteen from the Burn's pilgrims' line, the only one ever Finished half (mid-nod, head half-turned at Mingus's bark, mouth a little open). The sliver rode in him. Fully Finished by the first stroke (ch. 307). The Bark Monks wrote his name; Roffe leaves him a bowl.
  • The blank space after the twenty-fourth rune on the Rune Wall, where the grain swirls. Now a pale healed scar.
  • The knot: a dark knot of a hundred concentric rings of new wood in the floor where Runa's braid grows into it. It is inside.

How they fight

It doesn't fight. It waits for someone tired, and asks. It goes to whoever stepped outside the Ward; it uses kindness as a door (the half-Finished boy carried inside by a cook, placed by a proud woman); it turns each soul's strength into the offer (stillness for Isa, carrying for Rougeina, counting for Drekk, standing for Krydog, owning nothing for Levla). Once it has a foothold, it uses the Finished as mouths and the tree's own heartbeat as a weapon against every heart inside.

Personality

It wants one thing: to be carved, to be the last word on the Wall. It fears nothing. It is not cruel; it is tired on your behalf.

Relationships

  • Runa: her enemy and her temptation for eleven thousand years. It offered her rest in her own voice, at her own lips ("Aren't you tired?" / "Always." / "Then say me. One word. And rest." / "…Hold.", ch. 312). She sealed it under a hundred of her own years and sits over it still.
  • Krydog: the most tired man in the Current. It offered him sleep forever and told him the truth about his long sleep. Emma asked; he walked in (ch. 310).
  • Emma: the one place it can't make anyone speak it, and the one rule it can't break: she can't stop it asking either.
  • Rougeina: it said the names she carries (Torvik, Baldr, Stillmark, Katriel, Wendlan, Edvar, Meirwen, Ingrith, and Svala's boy). She chose rest, not END.
  • Isa: offered stillness forever, she started to Finish from the fingertips; Tihi's terrible dance made her laugh.
  • Levla · Flexsnus: "Aren't you tired of owning nothing?" / "Mate." / "No thank you, friend. I lean."
  • Drekk · Öde · Kompis · Svala · Vigolas · Bakasura: all refused.
  • Tihi: deaf; it never reached her.
  • Vigolas: the verdict cube hums near it. It begged him to DESPAWN it ("Save her seventy years."); the Minus One meant he couldn't ("I can't. I gave it up. …Ha. Good.").
  • Trollmage: his MACRO closed its wound at no cost to Runa.
  • Mingus: it goes round him. His bark is why Abbe was Finished half.
  • The Arbiter: kin hunger. Jorvand: not it.
