RoleANTAGONIST
First appearsher red hand in the margins of Trollmage's book; in person Saga III, Arc 8 · Brygdar Rises, ch. 134 FOR THE HEIR · in action ch. 138–140. Killed ch. 140.
MEIRWEN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Eleven, Keeper of the Codex Editorial (ch. 134). No Scalelist number.
Look
- Build & height: 1.74 m, elegant, long-limbed, a reader's slouch. She lounges sideways in her Council chair as if it were a reading chair (ch. 134).
- Face: fine-boned, bored-looking, a faint smile that knows how your sentence ends. Ch. 140: tears running down through the red ink on her cheek.
- Hair: long and dark, in a knot with a red pen pushed through it; in her seat, at the end, loose.
- Eyes: dark, amused, over her reading glasses, which hang on a chain.
- Skin & sin-mark: pale, ink-smudged; red-stained fingertips. No sin is shown: her law is an office. The Signet on the back of her right hand, the pen hand; after ch. 140 it goes dark on the Eleventh Chair.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a plain linen shift · a parchment-coloured robe embroidered with neat red margin notes (proof-marks, carets, stet, del. stitched down the sleeves) · reading glasses on a chain · a small locked wooden box at her belt.
- Signature item: the red pen (her tool), and the box (her price).
- Movement: languid, minimal. In the field she strikes with a short line drawn in the air, without looking up from her lectern. In her seat she doesn't even lift the pen ("In here I think it, dear, and it's struck.").
- Voice: silky, bored, maternal-condescending ("dear"); she finishes other people's sentences, and her balloon cuts into theirs. Her lines often begin with an em-dash. When she strikes speech, the struck balloon gets a red line and dissolves ("Un-said.").
- Variant looks: Lounging (ch. 134: sideways in the Eleventh Chair, "We can't make a comma."). At the lectern (ch. 138–139: in the Library's root gallery, Correctors stamping VOID on every sleeping book). Sweating (ch. 140: "Struck. Struck. Struck—"). Reading (ch. 140: kneeling on the white floor with her own yellowed page, the pen forgotten).
Power
She sees the last few heartbeats of the world as printed lines hanging in the air, and strikes one through with her red pen. It un-happens.
- The law: what a sin's history may say. The tool: the red pen.
- In her seat (the Codex Annex) she strikes by thought, even words: the crew's "WE SAW—" is struck mid-balloon ("Un-said."; "In my seat, a sentence is only a sentence.", ch. 140).
- The Last Edition: her Correctors stamp ERRATUM: VOID across the first page of every sleeping book in the Library, and each book's glow sinks to a cinder, so the seventy would sleep forever (ch. 139). Each book's thread, Kompis sees, goes grey.
- SFX: none for the strike. The red line is the sound. A struck balloon dissolves with a dry sssk.
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 7,000, but always one beat behind.
- Home tempo: the Codex Annex, her seat, where she strikes by thought.
- Heartbeat technique: THE UNHAPPENED BEAT. She doesn't strike an action; she strikes a whole heartbeat that has just happened, and everything in it un-happens at once: the crew charge through the Annex door three times, and three times they're standing outside it (ch. 140, three identical panels). No one else takes back a heartbeat.
- Burn cost (HADOM OVERFLOW): every edit adds a margin note to her own memory, until she can't trust her own history. Burned fast, the notes multiply; past her ceiling her pen would start striking her own past, line by line, faster than she could read it. She knows it: "Then do it before I edit this too. I will, you know. I always do." (ch. 140)
Techniques
| Technique | What it does | Cost | First shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strikethrough | A printed line of the last heartbeats struck; it un-happens | A margin note in her memory | Ch. 139 (the dropped book) |
| The Reset | Strikes an attack after it lands: un-swapped, un-shot, un-hit | — | Ch. 139 |
| Finishing Sentences | Cuts into your balloon and ends it for you ("—sentences. No.") | — | Ch. 134, 139 |
| ERRATUM: VOID | The Last Edition: every sleeping Codex stamped void on its first page | Her Correctors | Ch. 139 |
| The Rage Edit | Rewrites a sin's history in its own book: "Where it said precision I wrote rage." | — | Backstory (Smurjan's Wrath; told ch. 139) |
| Seat-Strike | In the Annex: strikes by thought, even speech ("Un-said.") | — | Ch. 140 |
| The Unhappened Beat | 4: a whole heartbeat taken back | Her own history | Ch. 140 |
| The Margins | Her Correctors slip into the Library and write in red in the margins of the Codices | — | ch. 134 |
The price
She has edited so many histories that she no longer trusts her own. Her memories are full of margin notes. She keeps one unedited page of her own life locked in a box, and she has never dared to open it. She wrote it the night before her first edit: "I locked it up so I'd never have to read it again. I knew. On the very first day, I knew." (ch. 140) Kompis sees it: every one of her threads is struck through in red, except one, which runs into the small locked box at her belt (ch. 139).
Weaknesses
- A beat behind. She can only strike what has already been written.
- The witness rule. Kali never stops talking, so she narrates everything ("I SAW that!"); it lands at the same instant as Smurjan's "We hit her", and the struck blow comes back. The tied crew, feeling each other, say it together: WE SAW IT, and a dozen struck blows land at once (ch. 139 splash). "…Witnesses." / "You feel each other. All of you. How terribly vulgar."
- Her own page. Rougeina Tear-Swapped with a drop of red ink on the box lid, flicked the clasp; Meirwen struck the Swap a beat late, and the page had already fallen open (ch. 140).
- Bakasura eats the red ink: "…Tastes like lies."
- How she was beaten (ch. 140): she read her own hand: the seven sins are seven virtues; the Council asked me to make them smaller so people would be easier to rank; I said yes; I am frightened that I said yes. She tried to strike her own reading, and the crew said it together: SHE READ IT. The red line snapped. She set the pen down "like a woman putting down something hot." "You said you were the editor. I'm on your list." … "The ones who wake… tell them it's a virtue. Every one." / "They'll read it themselves." / "…Yes. Unedited." Erasure kill (shoulders; silver-rose in a spilled pool of ink).
Gear & companions
- The red pen and the reading glasses.
- The box and the yellowed page, which Rougeina keeps after her death.
- The Codex Annex: lamps, desks, inkwells, the red inscription EVERYTHING IS A DRAFT above her desk.
- The Correctors (CORRECTOR · K-II MARKED · Codex Editorial): silent copyists in parchment-grey, red quills behind their ears, who pass through the Annex into the Library and write in the margins in red.
Personality
- Wants: a world that stays a draft forever: nothing final, nothing that can be read without her.
- Fears: reading the truth in her own hand.
- Contradictions: the one who made the sins small loved them first ("They are the most beautiful things I have ever read."); the editor who strikes everyone's history never dared to read a single page of her own.
- Humour: bored, sharp, ruthless: "Six. We can't make a law. We can't make a comma."; "Everyone always does. It's in the margins."
- Habits: finishes sentences; reads while talking; writes margin notes on whatever's in front of her.
- Alone: sits with the box in her lap and doesn't open it.
Relationships
- Rougeina: "Seven-seven-seven. I've read you too. Not your book: your list. …They were drafts, dear. Everyone is." Her killer, and the keeper of her page.
- Smurjan: "Where it said precision I wrote rage. You believed me for a hundred years." (ch. 139) His crimson script reads precision again as she reads her page.
- Kali: the talker whose narration became testimony.
- Kompis: saw the one unstruck thread. "Don't."
- Trollmage: her red hand in his book.
- Ingrith: her partner in the last campaign of the Council.
- Hjalmar: she finished his sentence for him ("Then do it without my—" / "—name. Yes. Nobody will even notice it's missing.").
- Bakasura: "…Tastes like lies."
Story so far
- III · The Architect War, Arc 8 (ch. 134–140): takes the Library while Ingrith takes Brygdar (ch. 134), waits in the root gallery (ch. 138), voids the sleeping books and resets the crew until the witness rule breaks her (ch. 139), retreats to her seat and is undone by her own page (ch. 140). DEAD · erased. Rougeina → 114.
- What broke: THE CODICES START TELLING THE TRUTH. The red lines lift off every book in the Library "like leaves falling upward" (ch. 140); the last red line fades in ch. 143; the Second Sign follows (ch. 144: seventy books wake and fly to seventy strangers).
- IV: crossed in red on Rougeina's finished list (ch. 217).
