Ingrith Salmskar
INGRITH · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Four, Keeper of Rank Certification (ch. 134). No Scalelist number: the woman who certified every rank in the world was never ranked.
Look
- Build & height: 1.60 m, brisk and compact, middle-aged, sitting bolt upright (ch. 134). She walks at the head of her army on foot, checking her measuring tape.
- Face: square, sensible, unsmiling; a schoolmistress's mouth. Cracked lenses by the end (ch. 143).
- Hair: iron-brown going grey, pinned up with brass rulers.
- Eyes: behind bronze-rimmed spectacles with sliding lenses that she never takes off. What she sees through them is the point: plates, never faces. Her POV shows Rougeina as "a slim, faceless blank with a plate where a face should be" (ch. 143).
- Skin & sin-mark: ink on her cuffs. No sin is shown: her law is an office. The Signet on the back of her right hand, the stamping hand.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a plain high-necked dress · the white Architect's robe, belted · a measuring tape worn like a stole · a bronze stamp on a chain at her belt: the First Seal · a small notebook · in her breast pocket, a small brass plate, worn smooth by thumbs.
- Signature item: the First Seal, which every other seal hangs from; and the brass plate: K-I UNMARKED · Scalelist #3,004,117.
- Movement: brisk, efficient, impatient with anything that won't hold still. She straightens her cuffs after every decision.
- Voice: clipped, measured, administrative. She addresses people by their rank ("There you are, K-two.", "Seven-seven-seven.", "Nobody. Again."). Balloons are square, with ruler tick-marks along the top edge.
- Variant looks: At the head of the column (ch. 134: a white road below Glasheim, seal-towers drawn by oxen). The Night Certification (ch. 135 splash: at sunset, stamping a hundred Examiners up to K-IV). On the giant's shoulder (ch. 141–143: high on Eken, measuring the grieving). Empty-handed (ch. 142–143: the First Seal erased, alone in the dawn beam, the brass plate against her heart).
Power
She stamps a rank onto a soul, and until the next sunrise the soul is exactly that rank, no more. A bronze seal the size of a door slams down out of empty air, the rank plate is burned new, and the sin-mark shrinks or swells to match.
- The law: every K-rank in the world. The tool: the bronze seals. Every Examiner carries one; hers is the First Seal, and every stamp hangs from it.
- Down: a freed prisoner's blazing Wrath stamped to a dot, K-I UNMARKED (ch. 134). Smurjan, standing still to aim, stamped K-I UNMARKED (certified · until sunrise): his script goes dark, his three shadows shrink to one, Kali can't get a word out (ch. 135). Kompis, Rougeina and Smurjan, kneeling still with grief over Stav: K-I UNMARKED, three times ("Grief holds very still. Thank you.", ch. 141).
- Up: THE NIGHT CERTIFICATION: at sunset she stamps her own Examiners up to K-IV SHAPED (certified · until sunrise) (ch. 135). The Chief Examiner of the Brygdar Pass, certified K-IV, is the one whose rod killed Old Stav (ch. 141).
- Stillness. She can only certify what she has measured, and measuring takes a moment of stillness. That's what the seal-domes are for: "Inside a seal, your sins are paperwork" (ch. 7).
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 5,400.
- Home tempo: the Certification Stacks (her seat, a tower of every rank decision ever issued, with one elevator that answers only her Signet); in the field, the hour after sunset, when a night of certifications lies ahead.
- Heartbeat technique: THE MEASURED BEAT. Every heart has one beat when it holds still: the gap of aiming, of grief, of sleep. Inside that one beat she measures and stamps, and on the next beat you are what she says. "There. Holding still. Thank you." No one else needs your stillness to strike.
- Burn cost (HADOM OVERFLOW): she no longer sees faces, only rank plates, and every stamp takes a little more. Burned to her ceiling (an army re-certified at once at dawn) she sees nothing at all but numbers; past it, the overflow reaches her own reflection, and she would see a plate where her own face should be. "Is there a face? Under your plate?" is the question she can't ask a mirror.

The price
She no longer sees faces, only rank plates. She has not seen the face of anyone she loves in thirty years. "He was a K-one. A carpenter. I certified him myself, the year we married. I haven't seen his face in thirty years. I can't remember it. I remember his number." (ch. 143) She keeps his plate, K-I UNMARKED · Scalelist #3,004,117, in her breast pocket, and Vigolas's deepened Greed-sight shows it glowing over her: the thing she values most (ch. 142).
Weaknesses
- No stillness, no stamp. Rougeina never stops moving; Vigolas has no number; Trollmage's waiting has no size.
- Sunrise. Smurjan spotted the window: at sunrise every stamp in the valley runs out in the same heartbeat (ch. 137). Trollmage spent the Kings' Share on it: MACRO : RISE = BRYGDAR, every troll and every stone king standing up at once, "and the ground Ingrith measured stands up under her army." ("I measured you—!")
- The First Seal. Vigolas's new KEYSTONE showed every line of value in the battle converging on it; ERASE, and every stamp hanging from it lapsed (ch. 142).
- The brass plate. "Check your pocket, Architect."
- How she was beaten (ch. 143): empty-handed on Eken's shoulder at dawn, offered Freystjarn's way out ("Leave your chair. It counts the same."), she refused: "Freystjarn was tired. I'm never tired. I measure. If I stop measuring, what is anybody?" "I'll keep the number." … "Is there a face? Under your plate?" / "Yes." / "Is it kind?" / "No. But it'll remember you." / "…Then remember I was exactly what I measured. Not one step more." Erasure kill (Rougeina's shoulders in the dawn beam).
Gear & companions
- The First Seal, the measuring tape, the sliding-lens spectacles, the notebook, the brass plate.
- The Examiners (EXAMINER · K-II MARKED · Rank Certification): long white robes, bronze seals on chains, brass rods crackling with binding script; night-certified to K-IV.
- The Severers (Sax's cutters) also serve her office (Saga III, Arc 6).
- Oswin's Shelvers, whose ring-samples showed her the deep road to the Ring Halls (ch. 137).
Personality
- Wants: for everyone to be exactly what they measure, so nothing is ever more or less than it should be.
- Fears: stopping. "If I stop measuring, what is anybody?"
- Contradictions: she certified the man she married and lost his face to it; she keeps a dead carpenter's number against her heart and calls it measurement; the woman who ranks all souls has never been ranked.
- Humour: none; she is too efficient.
- Habits: straightens her cuffs; consults a pocket watch before sunrise; writes rules down the moment they defeat her.
- Alone: takes the brass plate out of her pocket and holds it, and can't see anything on it but numbers.
Relationships
- Rougeina: "Seven-seven-seven." A faceless blank with a plate, to her. Her killer, and the one who promised to remember.
- Vigolas: the one man she could never stamp; he found the plate in her pocket.
- Trollmage: her K-two, frozen K-two forever by her death; the heir she couldn't measure.
- Smurjan: stamped to K-I twice; his eye found the sunrise.
- Old Stav: "K-one. Nobody. Move." Her Chief Examiner's rod killed him.
- Eken: "Nobody strikes it. The archives are very clear. Do not engage. Do not strike. It keeps." She had her army climb the axes in his back like a ladder.
- Meirwen: her partner in the last campaign. Freystjarn: the exit she refused.
- Her husband: a number in her pocket. Orka, Daniel, the Wreckers: lives her seal decided.
Story so far
- III · The Architect War, Arc 8 (ch. 134–143): marches on Brygdar (ch. 134), certifies her army up for the night and Smurjan down (ch. 135), besieges the troll halls (ch. 136), loses the dawn to RISE = BRYGDAR (ch. 137), takes the deep road to the Ring Halls, measures the grieving crew after Stav's death (ch. 141), loses the First Seal to KEYSTONE and ERASE (ch. 142), and refuses to stand down (ch. 143). DEAD · erased. Rougeina → 113.
- What broke: THE RANKS STOP MEANING ANYTHING. Seals go cold in every Examiner's hand; plates freeze where they were last stamped, true or not; only the Scalelist numbers still move (ch. 143 splash).
- V: her cold seal still holds the Wreckers' salvage-law until Daniel's appeal cracks it (ch. 233–234: "Ingrith is dead. The law isn't.").
