HRAFNKELL, the Ledger-Hound · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #1,512 · Bastion Five (ch. 30). Inside his own howl the plate is never seen: it's lost in the white blaze of his throat (ch. 30, 34). His sealed Ledger entry, read aloud by Trollmage (ch. 35): ASSIGNED: ~~K-IV SHAPED~~ → K-III TESTED · CAUSE: Lost the trail (the Archive theft) · SEALED by order of Architect Ten. Not to be shown on any board.

Look

  • Build & height: 1.96 m standing, tall and gaunt as a starved hound; long-boned, ribs under the coat, wrists like a greyhound's forelegs. He spends half of every scene on all fours, and lands from a leap "so lightly that the frost doesn't crack" (ch. 30).
  • Face: long and narrow, hollow-cheeked, a long sharp nose whose nostrils never stop moving. At rest: a polite smile, then the hunter's pleasure, eyes half-closed while he breathes in. From ch. 30 a purple bruise across his whole jaw ("How's the jaw?" / "Learning."), struck again on the same spot in ch. 35.
  • Hair: long, iron-grey, tied back with dozens of little paper ledger-tags, each with a number (ch. 30). They rustle when he shakes his head like a dog coming out of water.
  • Eyes: yellow-brown. When he catches the scent, the pupils go wide, like a hound that has just seen the hare (ch. 30).
  • Signature item: the scratched silver tag. His hand goes to it, without his meaning it to, when Architect Ten promises to "unseal what I sealed" (ch. 34), and he closes his fist over it "as if he could hide it" when Trollmage reads the seal (ch. 35).
  • Movement: a dog's economy. He moves nose first: ducks a sword "like a dog under a fence", follows a Swap-trail by scent, lies perfectly flat in grass downwind for hours. On two legs he walks "like a man coming to collect a parcel".
  • Voice: pleasant, educated, unhurried; he says "Captain" with real courtesy. He names people by smell ("Roses.", "Ink. Gunpowder. Dog."). The howl is not a balloon but a sound-shape: rings of ruled ledger-lines rolling out of his throat across the panel. SFX: AAAAAWOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
  • Variant looks: Howling (head thrown back, throat one white blaze, every plate on the field slamming down). Downwind (ch. 33: chin on folded hands in long grey grass, smiling). Bloody and grinning (ch. 35: hooked out of the starlight by Saltbrand's branding iron, "I'll learn the rest.").

Power

Hrafnkell howls, and inside the howl every fighter is held to the rank the Order assigned them. Not one inch more. (ch. 30's caption)

  • What it looks like: the howl rolls out in rings of fine ruled lines, like the lines of a ledger page; wherever a line passes a fighter, that fighter's rank plate comes down out of the air, stamped in heavy iron, and clamps on like a yoke.
  • What it does to each crew member (ch. 30, 34, 35): Trollmage becomes a real K-II, and any waited spell he writes inside it is not stopped but SPENT (eleven days fell out of the air like lead type). Kompis's Subtick is capped at seven tries (K-II tempo). Rougeina's Swap reaches ten paces. Smurjan becomes one body with one plate: Kali and Bakasura are crushed back into his shadow.
  • The rule applies to the hound too. His real rank is a sealed K-III, so his own howl drags him down to K-III as well (ch. 35). That's why he keeps his plate hidden in the glare.
  • The nose: every soul's Ledger line smells of ink. Kompis: "Ink. Gunpowder. Dog. And a deserter's sweat." Rougeina: "Ink and blood… something like roses" (and her Swaps leave a trail of roses he can follow). Trollmage: "Old ink. Very old. Moss and dust… is that porridge?" The misrouted smell of smeared ink. Mingus is "a clean, warm, dog-shaped blank, not even a gap, just dog". And ∞−1 is a hole in the world, blazing white, "the brightest thing I've ever smelled" (ch. 34). He spent every day after the Heist learning to smell nothing.
  • What it can't do: audit a hole: the howl's lines bend around Vigolas like water around a stone (ch. 30). Smell through salt steam (it hid Vigolas until the punch, ch. 30). Touch a waited spell that stays unwritten ("Not this time.": Trollmage keeps four days in his head, ch. 34–35). Find anything in Mingus to read, or to rank. Work in the Silence at Void-II's rim, where nothing that must be heard exists.
  • SFX: the howl AAAAAWOOOOOOOOOOOOO; the plates KLANNG; dead spell-letters tik — tak — tik — tak.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 420 as he really fights; 140 inside his own howl, held to his sealed K-III.
  • Home tempo: downwind on open ground, the Current or a grassland ridge, where scent travels and nothing masks it.
  • Heartbeat technique: NOSE FIRST. Inside one heartbeat he smells the ink of a decision before the body carries it out, and moves first. That's how he ducks a blade without turning, and why Kompis yells "He smells where I'm going to shoot!" (ch. 35). No one else reads intent by scent. It never works on Vigolas (a hole has no ink to give him warning) or Mingus (just dog).

The price

His own rule holds him too. The Order gave him a K-IV plate and a sealed K-III, and every time he howls he is dragged down to the paper he is ashamed of. He can't show his plate in the howl, can't hold his chain while he howls, and can't be what he is without letting his quarry be what they are: "Keep howling, and you're K-three on a ship full of people who aren't. Stop howling, and I'm not K-two." (Trollmage, ch. 35). The scratched-out number on his tag is the price worn at his throat.

Weaknesses

  • The seal. Read his sealed entry aloud and his howl becomes his trap ("Your rule applies to everyone. Including you, Mr. Hound.", ch. 35).
  • The hole. ∞−1 walks straight through AUDIT, and lands lightning on the same bruise twice.
  • Salt steam and strong scent: Saltbrand's own fire masked Vigolas (ch. 30).
  • An unwritten wait: Trollmage keeps the spell in his head and spends it the instant the howl stops: MACRO : STONE = 4 DAYS turned the Tally to troll-stone ("For Grandmother Ulla.").
  • The chain's own thread: Kompis's soul-sight finds the fraying link ("FOURTH LINK FROM THE MAST!") and Rougeina cuts it at exactly ten paces ("That's all I need.").
  • How he was beaten (ch. 35): Trollmage read the seal; Kompis and Rougeina broke the hole-chain; he chose pride ("Then I'll be what I am.") and stopped howling, which freed four days of waiting; the Tally sank as stone; Vigolas, leaping from the masthead with his coat, punched him out of mid-air. He escaped in the bark jolly-boat with Saltbrand.

Gear & companions

  • The hole-chain (spun from his own Ledger line).
  • Saltbrand, his Bastion partner, who hooked him out of the starlight.

How they fight

A hunt, not a duel. He studies before he strikes ("I'm not here to beat you yet, Captain. I'm here to learn how you run."), sets bait to make the quarry stand still, then howls to pull everyone down to paper and chains the one thing the howl can't touch. In close fighting he's all evasion and backhands, nose first. Bastion combo: Hrafnkell + Saltbrand (ch. 34): a ring of salt-fire around the innocents, AUDIT on the defenders inside it, the hole-chain thrown at the man outside. "What dies in there stays dead."

Personality

  • Wants: to be unsealed: his real rank back, the number un-scratched. Underneath it, to not lose the trail ever again.
  • Fears: the empty door at the end of a trail ("I followed your trail to the door and found nothing.").
  • Contradictions: a proud man who wears a humiliating secret at his throat; a tracker of ink who fell in love with the one thing that has none.
  • Humour: courtly and dry ("How's the jaw?" / "Learning."; "You could open your hand and fold me into a cube, if you could open your hand. That's the trouble with hands.").
  • Habits: sniffs everyone he meets, nose an inch away; touches the tag; laughs when he's hit, quietly, "like a man who's just been handed a gift."
  • Alone: sleeps curled at the foot of whatever he's guarding, "like a dog in front of a fire" (ch. 35), and wakes before the noise is over.

Relationships

  • Vigolas: his quarry and obsession: "Captain." He learned to smell nothing for him.
  • Trollmage: "Mr. Hound." The librarian who read his seal ("Seals are just stickers.").
  • Rougeina: "Roses, roses, roses." He follows her trail; she cut his chain at ten paces.
  • Kompis: "Architect Three's little asset. I read your file."
  • Mingus: "…That one smells like a dog." Mingus growls at him and steals his hounds.
  • Saltbrand: partner and rescuer; the only one who hears that he is K-III and says nothing more than "…K-three?"
  • Aldhrun (Architect Ten): master and judge; the man who holds his seal. Dead in Saga IV (ch. 206) with it still sealed.
  • Lärka, Stillmark, Ingen: his fellow Five.
Story so far
  • II · The Call, Arc 1 (ch. 29–35): arrives on the Tally, howls the crew down to paper, kills eleven days of Trollmage's waiting, chains Vigolas on Vrångö, and loses everything on the Tally's deck. Escapes.
  • II–III: still hunting with the Bastion, "Four" to the world (Saga III's opening state); off the page.
