WENDLAN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Eight, Keeper of the Gates (ch. 86). No Scalelist number (Architects are never ranked).

Look

  • Build & height: 1.83 m, lean and wind-bitten, ropy forearms, a builder's shoulders. He stands with his weight back on his heels like a man on a deck in a swell.
  • Face: sunburned, deeply lined by weather, quick to grin. "The only Architect who smells of weather." At rest, squinting into wind that isn't there.
  • Hair: wild grey hair, always whipping, because he is always standing in wind.
  • Eyes: pale sky-grey, crinkled; brass goggles pushed up on his forehead (they're left lying on the stone when he's gone, ch. 93).
  • Skin & sin-mark: sun-browned, chalk dust to the wrists. No sin is shown on the page: an Architect's power is an office, not a sin. The Signet glows on the back of his right hand. From ch. 87: his body keeps the score of his network: a snapped finger (ch. 87), a broken wrist (ch. 89), and by ch. 91 his left hand in splints (little finger, ring finger, wrist).
  • Clothing, layer by layer: a white Architect's robe worn like a work-smock · sleeves rolled to the elbow · a tool belt slung over the robe (folding rulers, hinges, chalk, an oil-can) · goggles · nothing on his head but wind.
  • Signature item: two fingers drawing a rectangle in the air, and a white iron frame unfolding section by section like a carpenter's folding ruler (ch. 86).
  • Movement: brisk, hands always busy: oiling a hinge, chalking a line, scratching an itch. In the Yard he doesn't even lift a finger ("Up here my doors open when I think about them."). Every time Rougeina Swaps, anywhere, he scratches: arm, neck, the back of his hand.
  • Voice: cheerful, salty, a foreman's patter: "Righto.", "lads", "my lovelies". Speaking through a frame, his balloon is small, far away, with a breeze-line through it. Pain comes out as "OW. Ow. Right."
  • Variant looks: Through the frame (ch. 86: a face the size of a hand mirror on the Eighth Chair, wind blowing out of it). Conductor (ch. 86 splash: every gate in nine realms clamping shut at his gesture). Splinted (ch. 91: at the workbench at night, Veyra binding his hand). Pinned (ch. 93: standing on his own open door as if on glass, held still by a borrowed gaze, smiling at the sky).

Power

He draws a rectangle in the air with two fingers and it becomes a gate. Whatever goes into one frame comes out of the other.

  • The law: every lawful crossing between realms. "Every lawful crossing between the nine realms passes through a frame built here." (ch. 86 caption) The tool: the gate-frames, and every gate-warden's anchor-stake.
  • In his seat, the Gate Yard, the law answers a thought.
  • The decree: TRANSIT CLOSED (ch. 86): seven Signets lit on the Council's glass, and every gate in nine realms clamped shut in white iron at once ("Right, my lovelies. Everybody shut.").
  • Veyra's lines are part of his network: his doors pass them (ch. 88).
  • SFX: frames unfolding klak-klak-klak like a carpenter's rule; a door snapping shut SHUNK; the wind through every frame, always.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 7,500.
  • Home tempo: the Gate Yard, under open sky. Indoors he is at his worst: "Sorry. Can't think in rooms."
  • Heartbeat technique: A DOOR UNDER A DOOR. Inside one heartbeat he opens a frame under a falling body and its partner above it, so the fall comes back to itself and never ends, faster every lap (ch. 88–89). No one else turns falling into a circle.
  • Burn cost (HADOM OVERFLOW): every gate in the world is a nerve in his body. Each frame he opens on a burned beat fires one; a forced crossing aches like a bad tooth, and a broken gate is a broken bone. Past his ceiling, every door he has open at once lights up together, and the beat overflows through the network: the pain of every crossing in nine realms, in one heart. He came close in the Yard (ch. 93), with a hundred doors open and the crew breaking them, and still wouldn't fold one ("Fold my Yard? … Never.").

The price

He is wired into his network. Every gate is a nerve: a forced crossing aches like a bad tooth, a broken gate is a broken bone, and every Swap itches him, which is how the wardens always found Rougeina (ch. 87). The crew learned to give him "something worse to feel": Smurjan snaps a hinge and far away Wendlan's finger snaps (ch. 87); Lilla Ulv breaks the floor frame's hinge and his wrist breaks (ch. 89). By ch. 91 his left hand is splinted to the wrist, and still: "Fold my doors? I'd sooner fold my lungs."

Weaknesses

  • A gate needs two frames. Break either one and it snaps shut on whatever is halfway through.
  • Breaking doors breaks him. Bakasura eats frames ("…Tastes like far away"), Smurjan snaps hinges, one Lilla Ulv shot runs through five, and Trollmage's MACRO : RUST = 1 YARD rusts a hundred doors at once (ch. 93).
  • The one path that isn't a door: Smurjan's Sightline finds it through the Yard, and Vigolas walks it in his footprints (ch. 92: "You're a patient one." / "We've had practice.").
  • Drekk, who feels doors breathe and steers a man through them by feel (ch. 90).
  • Anchor-Sight, worn: Rougeina's Envy I lets her wear Stillmark's sight for one strike, and he can't change his place, even standing on an open door (ch. 93).
  • How he was beaten (ch. 93): inside REMOVE's sixty beats the crew broke his doors until the pain outran him, and Rougeina bloomed out of her own phantom trail behind him. "Every door I ever built, I built so somebody could get home." / "Then you shouldn't have locked them." / "…Wind's changing." Erasure kill: chalk dust on the wind, a pair of brass goggles on the stone.

Gear & companions

  • The gate-frames: white iron, folding like rulers; from hand-mirror size to the Sea Frame, bigger than a mainsail, whose far side hangs over the Shallows (it fell into the Current when he died).
  • The tool belt, chalk and oil-can; the brass goggles.
  • The workbench in the Yard: chalk, folding rulers, hinges, and the hand-sized partner of the frame on his Council chair.
  • Veyra, Warden of the Gate Yard (K-IV SHAPED · #1,431), his lieutenant for twenty years.
  • Gate-wardens (GATE-WARDEN · K-II MARKED, anchor-stakes, chains of light) and Sentinels.
  • The Weir, the great gate-station of the Shallows: four realm-gates in a white-walled harbour.

How they fight

He never stands where you are. He opens doors so the fight happens somewhere else: your shot comes home, your floor goes away, your ship is herded into a pen. With Veyra's lines he builds boxes ("All in their boxes. Good.") and drops them through his floors. He finishes by never having to: doors on all sides, a hundred at once, and only the itch to scratch. Combo: Wendlan + Veyra (ch. 88–92): her lines stop everything but feet, and his doors pass her lines, so his Sentinels pour into every pen she draws.

Personality

  • Wants: doors that get people home. "First frame I ever built, a fisherman's girl walked through it and hugged her dad on the far side of the world. Didn't even look back at me. Just ran. That's what a door's for." (ch. 91)
  • Fears: not knowing what is walking through his doors: "…And because the world woke up wild, and I don't know what's walking through my doors any more."
  • Contradictions: a man who built every door in the world, ordered to lock them; an Architect who can't think in rooms.
  • Humour: cheerful, workmanlike, rude to pain.
  • Habits: scratches the itch; oils hinges; talks to his frames.
  • Alone: sits on the edge of his workbench at night with the wind in his hair and all the frames glowing, each with a different night sky inside it.

Relationships

  • Veyra: his warden for twenty years; "It's a hinge, Veyra. Hinges mend." After him, her thickest thread ends in the air (ch. 93).
  • Rougeina: "Hello, itch." The one crossing he could never block, and the woman who crossed him off: "Someone who liked weather."
  • Vigolas: "Open your hand, lad." / "I don't open my hand. Greed keeps everything."
  • Smurjan: "Big quiet one. Noted." / "You're a patient one."
  • Drekk: the faceless navigator who felt his doors breathe.
  • Kompis: the Nursery boy who once stood in the Yard and stared.
  • Torva: a file of complaints. Aldhrun and the Council: the seven Signets that made him lock the world.
Story so far
  • III · The Architect War, Arc 2 (ch. 86–94): closes every gate after the Bloom (ch. 86), hunts the Marka across the Current by doors (ch. 87), pens the crew at the Weir with Veyra (ch. 88), loops them through Codexia's sky (ch. 89), loses Veyra's stake to REMOVE (ch. 90), refuses to fold his network (ch. 91), fights in his Yard (ch. 92) and dies there (ch. 93). DEAD · erased.
  • What broke (ch. 94): THE GATES GO DARK. Every gate in every realm dies at once when his Signet lands: carts cut in half at black frames, families on the wrong side of dead doors, Vägskälet's roads grey (Torva: "On foot, then."). From here on, travel is by ship and the Current. On the Council, a dark chair with a little black door on its seat that nobody can name.
