Nine guardians of the bark.

Nine burls of the tree, the Scarwood: wildcards grown where Ferdinand was wounded.

Nine who keep the islands in the Current. Not blood, not wood: water. Their order's true name is still the sea's secret.

The five who sail together, Vigolas, Kompis, Rougeina, Trollmage and Smurjan, are five fragments of one soul. The reader knows. They don't.
