Rougeina
ROUGEINA · K-III TESTED · Scalelist #777 (Saga I–II) → ROUGEINA · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #777 since the Envy Codex opened (ch. 85; last drawn on the page ch. 196; no new plate in Saga V–VI). The number never moves after her kills, because the board can't credit a kill nobody remembers.
Look
- Build & height: 1.70 m, a dancer's build: long-legged, light, all tendon. She stands on the balls of her feet and is never flat-footed.
- Face: sharp, fine-boned and pale, with a small scar through her left eyebrow and a mouth that rarely smiles. When it does, the crew stops talking. Age 27.
- Hair: crimson. Until Saga III ch. 93 it was long and straight, in a high tail that whipped like a blade. The Gate Yard took it: the Sea Frame went black on a lock of it, which Veyra kept. Since then it is cut short, ragged at the jaw, and she hasn't evened it.
- Eyes: cool green. When she marks a Swap target, a pinpoint of silver-rose light shows in her pupil for a frame.
- Skin & sin-mark: her sin-mark is on the inside of her right wrist: two interlocked rings, one silver (Pride) and one rose (Envy). Envy (unsealed) has inscribed fine rose script up her forearm over 27 years. Pride is sealed, and its ring is cold silver and still.
- Clothing, layer by layer: dark wrapped bindings at the chest · a sleeveless fitted top of charcoal silk · a long split skirt of deep wine cloth slit to the hip for kicking, over tight black leggings · always barefoot, the soles hardened, faint rings on the toes · a harness across the back holding eight thin blades, crossed in an X of four over four · black fingerless gloves.
- Signature item: the eight blades in their X, and the silver-rose afterimages she leaves behind.
- Movement: she is already there. Panels show her after she's arrived. She perches on high places (masts, chimneys, statues) and never sits where others sit.
- Voice: low, clipped and dry. Short sentences. Rare laughter, and when it comes it's sudden, bright and helpless. Her balloons are narrow and sharp-tailed.
- Variant looks: Faceless (Saga II Arc 4): smooth skin where the face was. She still sees and hears, but has no mouth. The 12,001 (ch. 197): eight blades become a storm of silver-rose ribbons. All five (ch. 408, Envy): for one heartbeat, all five of them in one body.
Power
She trades places with anything she can see. A stone, a gull, a lantern, a man's blade in mid-swing, a falling tear. Blink, and she is where the thing was and the thing is where she was.
- Rules: it needs line of sight. Size doesn't matter much, but mass does: Swapping with a boulder hurts, and Swapping with a ship would kill her. It works on her own phantom trails too (ch. 51), because they're hers.
- The erasure kill: whoever she kills is forgotten by everyone except her. The world closes over the gap: names vanish from walls, boards close ranks, even the killer's employers forget. Baldr (Saga I) and Stillmark (Saga II) are carried by her alone.
- What it can't do: Swap with what she can't see (blindfolds, fog, Stillmark's Anchor-Sight, which freezes the places of everything he looks at). Swap twice inside one heartbeat (until the 12,001).
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Home tempo: Astralis, which is unstable and phases with the observer. In Astralis she is as fast as whoever is watching her believes she is.
- Burn cost: every Swap leaves a phantom trail anyone can follow. A full burn leaves a thousand, a glowing map straight to her.
Techniques
| Technique | What it does | Cost | First shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Swap | Trade places with anything in sight | A phantom trail | Ch. 3 |
| Eight-Blade Dance | Swap-chained blade work: she's everywhere at once, eight blades in a circle closing on one target | Several trails; exhausting | Ch. 5 |
| Phantom Feint | Leaves trails on purpose as decoys, a false map to make a hunter look the wrong way | The decoys are real trails too | Saga I, Arc 2 |
| Trail-Swap | Swaps with her own phantom trail, or an enemy's ("you don't get to have those, they're mine") | — | Ch. 51 |
| Stillness | The counter to mirroring: a reflection can't go first. She waits until the enemy moves first | Nerve | Ch. 51 |
| Moth-Swap (light-to-heavy) | Swaps with the lightest living thing in sight (a moth) toward the heaviest place, so it carries her and then her weight drops into the strike | Cracked two ribs learning it | Saga III ch. 106 (Tyngden) |
| Tear-Swap | Swaps with the smallest thing in sight (a drop of blood, a tear) to appear inches from a face | Precision; one chance | Ch. 62 |
| Panther Swap | Swaps with the black panther mid-pounce, so the attacker is suddenly facing teeth | The panther hates it | Saga II |
| The Erasure Kill | See 3 | She carries them, and her tempo drops | Ch. 26 (Baldr) |
| The 12,001 | See 4 | Once per lifetime | Saga IV |
The price
- Phantom trails: every Swap leaves a fading silver-rose afterimage that can be followed. That's how Baldr found the crew (ch. 23), and how Stillmark hunted her (ch. 60).
- She alone carries the memory of everyone she has killed. No one can grieve them with her. Since Saga III, each name slows her heart (Tempo −1 per name she carries alone).
Weaknesses
- Stillmark (Bastion, built for her): Anchor-Sight. Beaten in ch. 62 and killed, and now forgotten by all but her.
- Blindness, smoke, darkness: no sight, no Swap.
- Mirrors and copies: a Nightmare that copies her Swap (ch. 51); Kali borrowing the Swap (ch. 9).
- Baldr's ink: "Your ink lands where I was." His orders hit the object she swapped with.
- Her face: Räva can steal it with one laugh (ch. 57). Without it, even her panther growls at her.
- Her fear: being forgotten, especially by the idiots on that deck.
Gear & companions
- The black panther: big, silent and yellow-eyed, it moves like a shadow with eyes. She has never named it; it answers to a click of her tongue. It sleeps against her back.
- Her mother's shard: the Archive shard with her mother's misrouting, ROUTED BY ORDER OF ARCHITECT THREE. She keeps it on her, not in Vigolas's coat.
How they fight
She doesn't fight in front of you; she fights where you were. She opens from high ground and comes in with Swap after Swap from behind and above, eight blades closing in a ring. She finishes with one clean cut. Defensively she's never there to be hit. Team combos: Captain's Pull → Swap (Vigolas throws her toward a spot and she Swaps the rest of the way) · Shared Beat → Swap (she moves on Kompis's kept line) · Sightline → Tear-Swap (Smurjan finds the exact point, she appears there) · MACRO : SLIPPERY → Eight-Blade Dance.
Personality
- Wants: to finish the list. To find out what happened to her mother. And, though she'd never say it, to belong.
- Fears: being forgotten.
- Contradiction: the killer who makes people disappear is terrified of disappearing. She is proud, and she laughs at Vigolas's jokes when she thinks nobody's watching.
- Humour: bone-dry. "Took you long enough."
- Habits: sleeps sitting up with a blade; sharpens all eight blades in the same order every night; perches; counts exits.
- Alone: she unfolds the list and reads the crossed-off names aloud, very quietly, so someone has heard them.
Relationships
- Vigolas: the man she robbed on day one. They have an unspoken understanding: he never asks about the list.
- Kompis: he saw her mother's shard in ch. 3 and never told anyone. She trusts him because of it.
- Kali: the only one who ever beat her at her own game (ch. 9). Grudging respect, and they bicker like sisters.
- The panther: her shadow, and the only one who can't forget her. Except when her face is gone.
- Stillmark: the man she killed out of mercy, whom only she remembers.
Story so far
- I: kills Baldr, the First Sign. Carries him alone.
- II: hears "Little storm." Loses her face and gets it back. Kills Stillmark; the Bastion becomes "Four" to everyone but her.
- III: Arc 1: kills Katriel, and under Nässla's sting passes copy someone: the Envy Codex opens (ch. 84). Rose script covers her right arm, shoulder and collarbone, and she is now K-IV SHAPED · #777. Her heart skips once (ch. 85). Arc 2: Wendlan. The erasure kill's hidden cost (tempo −1 per name) is revealed (Arc 7). The list grows short. Kvar learns to carry some of the weight for her.
- IV: faces the mirror: Echo, her mother. The 12,001. The Pride Codex opens. Solvig is taken from her.
- V–VI: Mirror-Step; the Convergence.
- VI · Arc 1: Stage IV: her blade reflects an empty deck (ch. 332, 334). Swaps a sentry's lantern in the blind fleet (ch. 338). "You'll get your sixteen. Greed keeps everything." (ch. 340).
- VI · Arc 2: Torva + Rougeina: the Hum names each lie, Road-Reading shows where each runner will be, and she Swaps there first (ch. 341); says her eight at the junction, and Torva asks nothing (ch. 341). Cross-Swap frees Smurjan's sewn shadows (ch. 343). To the Menders: "I carry them so they're not nowhere."; her eyelids sewn, laughed free (ch. 344). Swaps Krydog back three times and runs out of things to see (ch. 347); Swaps Menders off the lion's lines (ch. 348).
- VI · Arc 3: on the away team to Heartbeat (ch. 352). To Vigolas without the name: "It's the same hole, just turned round." · "Every day. Out loud." (ch. 357). Declines Nagel's offer to pin her names into someone ("They're mine to carry. But thank you for asking." / "Same as me, then."); adds a ninth thing to her eight: "And him. Keep him." (ch. 359).
- VI · Arc 4: offers Krydog her mirror-blade, Pride to Pride; he turns away ("Not tonight." / "Next time, then.", ch. 362). Hears Svala's fear ("Then it's in two."); says the eight with Kompis, "And the dog." (ch. 364). Swaps with the hunter reaching for Kompis's waiting ("Don't you dare stop waiting for him.", ch. 365).
- VI · Arc 5: Swaps hunters off the bark into empty air (ch. 372). Swaps Krydog down a mile to the Kettle's bell rope ("You're insane.", ch. 377). Her eight aren't in the stands of the dead ("They'd have sat at the back."); Kompis takes her hand (ch. 380).
- VI · Arc 6: stands north, with the panther; finds eight empty seats at the back ("There. At the back.", ch. 381). Her Arbiter-face is an old woman walking out of the surf (ch. 382). To Vigolas: "You can override anything, Captain. You can't override what isn't there." / "I came to cut something. I'd like to see what's being built first."; drops to one knee, hand on her heart, when Kompis is struck (Rule Six as a flinch, ch. 384). No dead of her own to fight: "…I know what I'm for." She runs into the Ring and Swaps the dead in one at a time (ch. 385–386). Swaps onto the Arbiter and stands on a stranger's yield (ch. 388). In Ögar's beat: Swap + Cross-Swap (Kompis and the dog for Hild's cutlass), rooted a heartbeat (ch. 389). "Still fighting." / "We stopped." (ch. 390).
- VI · Arc 7: the Null takes her blade-sharpening order (ch. 391). "You can't throw love at it. But you can say it… The Quoka." (ch. 392); Tindra whole behind her for one beat ("Took you long enough.", ch. 393). Cross-Swaps a fishwife out of the white only after asking ("May I?", ch. 394). Falls with the crew in the Long Night (ch. 399). Pride I: the mirror shows four faces; CROSS-SWAP trades the point in the door for the knot's empty heart and hauls the Null's core up into the knot ("That's where you go."); Envy I shows a rose list, VIGOLAS · KOMPIS · SMURJAN · TROLLMAGE ("That's not a kill list… The other kind.", ch. 400). Rooted twice.
- VI · Arc 8: "We were never two."; "I vote more."; "Seen." (Fenna's mark). Ch. 405: the small Kompis and Rougeina inside the Arbiter stop and take hands ("We stopped." / "So can they."). Ch. 408: Envy: "Become what you see.", all five in one body for one heartbeat, she erases the Null's one thread (back past the First Count); "Rougeina. That's the one I keep." The erasure's weight is a longing ("It was so lonely."). Kompis carries it with her ("Eight names and a homesick thing. We'll say them together." / "Fine. …Together."). Pride places the Null: "You belong before it… Asleep. That's your place."
- VI · Arc 9: calls the hunters' rules over Krydog's berth ("Swap them. Hold them. Throw what's finished.", ch. 412); Kali borrows her Swap, lent (two Swappers, ch. 413); says the eight and the homesick one with Kompis every night (ch. 413); full burn, a thousand trails ("Follow them. I dare you.", ch. 414). Astralis (ch. 419): every mirror still cracked; Nässla's sting, "Are you happy?" / "Yes.", and it's true; she sits where others sit for the first time (a cork chair); writes ROUGEINA on the list and crosses it out; the eight and the homesick one said with Kompis in two realms at once. Home to the ship (ch. 420).
- Status at the end of Saga VI: K-IV SHAPED · #777; her list closed; carries the eight (uncounted, gone) and the Null's longing with Kompis; tempo 120 (by her rule, the ch. 408 erasure is not carried alone: Kompis carries it with her).
