Kompis
KOMPIS · K-II MARKED · Scalelist #48,112 (ch. 2) → #9,880 → #3,107 (end of Saga I, after the Protocol Hall) → KOMPIS · K-III TESTED · Scalelist #1,288 (ch. 122, the Lust Codex; drawn again ch. 135, 147). The latest on-page plate.
Look
- Build & height: 1.80 m, solid and soft-edged: a fisherman's shoulders, a bit of a belly, big careful hands. He looks like the safest person in any room, which made him a perfect spy.
- Face: broad and kind, golden-tan skin, crow's feet from squinting at water. His nose bleeds after Subtick bursts, so there's often a dried trail on his upper lip. At rest he looks half asleep. He isn't.
- Hair & beard: brown hair under the hood, cut short and badly by himself. A braided beard, two thick braids tied with fishing line, with one strand of green lake-weed woven in that he never takes out.
- Eyes: warm brown. When Lust-sight is on they film over with faint gold, and the reader sees threads.
- Skin & sin-mark: the gold sin-mark sits on the inside of his left wrist: a small knot of golden thread, like a fishing knot. At K-III it will spread up the forearm in looped lines.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a thermal undershirt · a hoodie older than empires (moss-grey, patched at the elbows, a pocket at the front for dog treats, the hood always half-up) · canvas trousers with knee patches · wading boots · a bandolier across the chest with five empty loops (one for each soul-gun; only one or two are ever filled at a time). Since ch. 41, a small wooden box tied with string hangs at his hip: Ivar's pieces.
- Signature item: the hoodie, and Mingus at his heel in every panel.
- Movement: slow, unhurried, and he never runs unless Mingus does. In Subtick he moves exactly once, perfectly.
- Voice: gentle, warm and slow. He never raises it. He laughs easily and cries easily; when he does both at once, the moment is true. His balloons are soft-edged and rounded.
- Variant looks: Child (age 8, the burning village and the Nursery): a too-big hoodie and a hunting knife. Ridden (Saga II Arc 3): eyes filmed grey, moving like smoke. Older (Saga V+): grey in the beard, the lake-weed still there.
Power
The world freezes grey. Inside that frozen instant, Kompis lives the next moment again and again (dozens, hundreds, eventually thousands of times), trying every angle, every shot and every step, and then keeps the one version he survives. Colour snaps back and he does that one thing, perfectly, once.
- The anchor: Subtick only works while Mingus's heart beats beside him. It's drawn as a golden pulse line along the bottom border of the panel (ba-dum. ba-dum.). No dog, no Subtick. Separating them is the enemy's best move.
- What it can't do: change what already happened. It looks for a survivable version of the next moment. If there isn't one, it keeps looking, forever. (Saga II Arc 3: in the dream, Subtick turned on him and relived his brother's death endlessly. There is no version where his brother lives.)
- Lust-sight is separate and passive: threads and gun-souls.
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 12 for his body: an ordinary K-II, deliberately slow. But inside Subtick he lives one of Mingus's heartbeats up to ≈1,000 times (Saga II), ≈10,000 (Saga III), and in the end a billion (the Convergence), which is how the old legend of the "Subtick Billionaire" becomes true at last.
- Home tempo: Heartbeat, the realm that is the heartbeat. At the cabin his tempo and Mingus's are the same number.
- Heartbeat technique: SHARED BEAT. Kompis can lend his timing to anyone whose thread he holds. For one heartbeat, a crewmate acts on the version Kompis kept: they move where Subtick found the safe line, without having lived it themselves. It's drawn as a golden thread pulled taut between them. No one else in the saga can give another person their timing.
- Burn cost: every Subtick burst costs his body: sweat, a nosebleed, shaking knees. A Shared Beat costs double: his body pays for the friend's version too.
Techniques
| Technique | What it does | Cost | First shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subtick Shot | Freeze, relive, keep, fire once: the bullet that can't miss | Nosebleed | Ch. 2 |
| Thread-Read | Reads the threads in a room: loyalties, lies, love, who will betray whom | Headache in crowds | Ch. 2 |
| Thread-Pull | Pulls on a thread so a person feels the one they're tied to (wakes a sleeper by their mother's thread, calms a mob by their children's) | Draining | Saga I, Arc 3 |
| Gun-Talk | Speaks with the soul inside a gun. Soul-guns choose him; he never owns them | — | Ch. 2 (Ivar) · ch. 61 (Lilla Ulv) |
| Shared Beat | See 4 | Double burn: he passed out the first time | Named Saga III ch. 107 (lent to Rougeina on Tyngden) |
| THE KNOT (Lust Codex) | Ties a thread between two souls, who then feel each other. Re-ties bonds that were cut. Tied a star together (ch. 124). | He feels both ends of every knot; nosebleeds | Saga III ch. 122–124 |
| Wolf Ricochet | With Lilla Ulv: the bullet is a running wolf cub that bounces off walls on a Subtick-chosen path and bonks (cuts chains, disarms, knocks out) | — | Ch. 61 |
| Dream-Building (lucid) | Inside Sömnen, he builds a dream on purpose out of every warm thing he has: the cabin | Very costly; only in dreams | Ch. 55 · finished by a completion-hunter, ch. 355: he can never dream the cabin himself again (Mörda dreams it for him, ch. 399) |
| Four-Gun Volley | Ivar, Lilla Ulv, Fru Gnista and Tyst at once, each on its own Subtick line | Heavy nosebleed | Saga III ch. 117 (Smedjan) |
| Five-Gun Volley | Ivar, Lilla Ulv, Fru Gnista, Tyst and Bror all at once, each on its own Subtick-chosen line; three can be fired by their own souls. Bror's line shoves allies out of the way | One Subtick loop if Ögar names it; otherwise his body | Saga IV ch. 187 (first use, vs Silversten) |
The price
His body, and the dog. Subtick wrecks him a little every time (nosebleeds, trembling, days of exhaustion after big fights), and it requires Mingus. The deeper price is in what he's lived: Subtick makes him remember thousands of deaths he didn't die. [Arc 3 loss] Mörda's ride took the memory of his little brother's face.
Weaknesses
- Separate him from Mingus and Subtick dies. (The Hounds' Ledger-chains, ch. 58/64. Lärka's HUSH in ch. 39–44 silenced the heartbeat itself.)
- Silence: Lärka (Bastion) was built for him. In a cone where heartbeats can't be heard, the golden pulse line goes flat.
- The past: Subtick can't fix the past. Mörda used that against him.
- His paperwork: Trisdel still owns his file. The Hounds and the Engagement Protocol can call him "back".
- Kindness: he will lower his gun for anyone who is hurting, enemies included (Lärka).
Gear & companions
- MINGUS: see. Never a weapon, never the price.
- The five soul-guns (all forged at Smedjan by Malm; each soul is won over, not owned):
| Gun | Soul inside | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ivar (hunting rifle; since reforging, gold-veined steel engraved with a bear, a little hat and a dog) | A grumpy old hunter, grey moustache: the senior gun | Shattered ch. 41 shielding Kompis; his soul waited in Malm's forge-fire. REFORGED Saga III ch. 114: Kompis struck the hammer remembering. "BOY! WHERE'VE YOU BEEN?!" |
| Lilla Ulv (short heavy pistol, a running wolf engraved on the barrel) | A wolf cub who never grew up: playful, brave, scared of thunder | Since ch. 61 |
| Fru Gnista (long flintlock, cracked mother-of-pearl grip painted with stars) | An old Court fireworks-mistress, dismissed for "excessive celebration" | Saga III ch. 115. Her shots are fireworks (blind, dazzle, burn oil). Slow to load and loud. |
| Tyst (a long thin rifle, plain dark wood, blackened steel) | An assassin under a vow of silence: no soul-text ever, she speaks in gestures | Saga III ch. 116. Her shots make no sound. Kompis reads her the old way. |
| Bror (sawn-off shotgun) | His own little brother (Lillebror, 5; given name Slimo). Malm forged it from the brother's whittling knife: birch grip, the blade inlaid in the stock, engraved two boys and a dog, running. Its shot is a wide wave of warm gold force that shoves: it holds up, pushes back, gets people out of the way, and doesn't want to hurt anyone. | Won Saga IV ch. 186 (the burning Lantern Hall, his one beat from Ögar) |
- Baldr's silver pen. He kept it after Saga I without knowing why. Inert.
- The box with Ivar's pieces.
How they fight
He doesn't start fights. He stands slightly behind the line, reads the threads, and waits for the moment. Then Subtick, one shot, done. He protects; he doesn't hunt. Team combos: Shared Beat → Rougeina (she Swaps on his line) · Thread-Read → Vigolas's Gold-Point (what's valuable to them) · Subtick Shot + Trollmage's MACRO (the troll multiplies one perfect shot by however long he waited).
Personality
- Wants: a quiet life by the water with the dog. And for his crew to be alive at the end of it.
- Fears: the next Call (with no Ivar); being sent back; the door in his head where his brother is.
- Contradiction: a trained spy who can't stop telling the truth to the people he loves.
- Humour: dry and gentle, a lot of "…Yeah." and "Oh, Drekk."
- Habits: fishes off the stern; hums a lullaby from somewhere cold; talks to his guns; puts the dog's needs first, every time.
- Alone: he holds Ivar's box and says goodnight to it.
Relationships
- Mingus: the dog is forever. His heart is Kompis's anchor.
- Vigolas: best friend. The man he was sent to betray. "We'll get him back." "How do you know?" "Because I'm greedy."
- Ivar: the grumpy old man in his rifle. "I liked the bear." "You shot its hat off." "It was a beautiful hat."
- Lärka: the hunter built to kill him. He taught her what a heartbeat sounds like, and she came back and kept his heart going.
- Mörda: the nightmare who rode him. He gave her a dream and she turned. She is now searching every sleeper's dreams for his brother's face.
Story so far
- I: the spy who chooses. Confesses, defects, rank #3,107.
- II: loses Ivar, wins Lilla Ulv, is ridden by Mörda, loses his brother's face, gives a nightmare her first dream.
- III: Ivar reforged; Fru Gnista and Tyst. The Lust Codex opens with Vigolas as witness.
- IV: Arc 4 (the Pillar of Names): the Guild's ledger shows his village Snöberga was engaged to harvest him (SIBLING: ONE (AGE 5). NOT REQUIRED.): his last illusion about Trisdel dies. Ögar shows him his death (a burning doorway). Mörda shows him the face kept in Siv's dream. He spends the beat and wins Bror (ch. 186). First Five-Gun Volley (ch. 187). Wears Ögar's coin-tear in his beard-braid (one beat of warning before his death, once).
- V–VI: the Five-Gun Volley; the Billion. At the Convergence, the five are one, and for one chapter Vigolas's ALTERNATE costs him Kompis's name.
- VI · Arc 1: wakes from no dream at all (Stage IV, ch. 334); sees the completion-hunters have no threads ("They end like a sentence with a full stop.", ch. 335). Leaves Mingus with Vaka, the first time in his life ("Dawn. You come at dawn.", ch. 336); through the blind fleet without him ("I just hate it."), pinches out the frozen lantern flame (ch. 338). Reunited in the sea: "Never again, you hear me." (ch. 339).
- VI · Arc 2: reads threads on the Menders (people, ch. 343) and FINISH IT. crawling up their sleeves (ch. 344); sees Dolk as a child tied in a thousand severed threads and can't speak (ch. 345). Levla tags him PRICE: EVERYTHING YOU'RE WAITING FOR (ch. 347); hauled toward the wound to be sewn in as the knot, he steers Dolk's blind cuts ("NOT the gold, that's me and him!", ch. 347); the Sabre Lion catches him by the hood (ch. 348). Reads Läka's thread to her lost husband, not ending in grey; promises Dolk: "We'll bring you something you can hold." (ch. 350). His cabin dream is the last one not white (ch. 350).
- VI · Arc 3: the cabin is real, in Heartbeat (ch. 351); at the cabin his heartbeat and Mingus's are the same (ch. 352). Shoots down snow that has already fallen (ch. 353). Nagel's Pinned Beat holds one of his heartbeats (the beat Mingus pushed the Nursery door open); he steps over Emma's rope for Isa (ch. 354). ARC LOSS: his dream of the cabin: a hunter's palm finishes his Dream-Building (a bowl for Slimo, a chair, a window); he can never dream it himself again (Bror: "It was a good chair."); the Manticore (ch. 355). Understands first what ALTERNATE took: "It's the one you say a lot." (ch. 356); "I'll come anyway. You don't have to say it." (ch. 357). Nagel's secret is his: a boy saying his own name to a dog every night ("Now you know I talk to the dog."); he thanks Nagel (a full-page creak, ch. 357–358). Inside the cabin awake: "I don't need to dream it. I'm in it."; his new dream is a road of ships, gold (ch. 359). Shakes Nagel's iron hand: a dark ring burned on his palm ("Now you've got a mark. From the door." / "Good."); "I don't have to dream you. I just have to come back." (ch. 360).
- VI · Arc 4: shoots down rain that has already fallen (ch. 361). Lets Mingus walk the Twelfth Road alone to wait for Svala at the Road's End ("I said never again." … "Go on. She needs somebody at the end.", ch. 364); without the dog, no Subtick; a hunter's palm reaches for his waiting, Rougeina's Swap an inch ahead of it (ch. 365). His joy in Iskall's Look: Mingus at the Nursery door (ch. 366). The golden pulse line back on the border at the Road's End (ch. 370).
- VI · Arc 5: to Orm: "You've still got nobody of your own, have you?" (ch. 372). Sees Jeppson's thread fraying and whispers "Look down." (the Rivet Beat, ch. 374). Thread-Pull carries Vigolas to Njord's thunderhead (Storm-Answer, ch. 376). "It's there. That's enough." (the cabin he can't dream, ch. 379). Says Rougeina's eight with her and takes her hand; his brother isn't in the stands of the dead ("You're with me.", Bror warm); takes Flexsnus's bill (ONE (1) NOTCH, ANY RULE, WHEN NEEDED. AMOUNT DUE: COME BACK., ch. 380).
- VI · Arc 6: stands south, with Mingus. His nose bleeds with no Subtick when Trollmage is hit (Rule Six as a flinch, ch. 383). Smurjan vs Kompis: Ivar's shot swallowed by the Whole Bite; "You're not my brother. But you're also not not my brother."; "I'm not doing this with a gun.": he lays the rifle down and walks in unarmed (ch. 383); Smurjan's one correct strike lands palm to his heart, and across the floor Rougeina drops; Krydog: "GET UP!"; he sees the five's threads grown, not tied, and says nothing (ch. 384). Bror rolls his dead over the rope ("Gently, Lillebror.", ch. 386). Subtick finds no version that matters against the Arbiter, until Mingus barks him out (ch. 388). In Ögar's beat: a Shared Beat to all four (ch. 389). With Rougeina: "Still fighting." / "We stopped." (ch. 390).
- VI · Arc 7: sees no thread pass through Jorvand's door, and one gold thread leave his back (Hjalmar's, ch. 391). Subtick finds no version against the Null (ch. 392). Receives the first Quoka, from Vigolas, and sees the five lines fit like an unpicked rope: "They know each other." (ch. 393). Thread-Pull brings back ten walking into the white (ch. 394). Dreams the cabin again through Mörda, not by himself ("I can't dream this any more. They finished it." / "So I'm dreaming it for you.", ch. 399). Lust I: THE KNOT, five-fold; he feels all four ("Vigo, you're starving.", ch. 400). Nosebleeds all arc.
- VI · Arc 8: "We've just been wearing the days separately."; "Nobody's seen us be one."; sees the first thread there ever was (Mingus ↔ Fenna) and the First Count. Calls in Flexsnus's bill ("Flex. Now."). Finds and holds the Null's one thread (he can't cut) for Rougeina's erasure (ch. 408); carries the longing with her. Bror's gentle gold shove sends the forgotten Null home ("Gently, Lillebror. It's lost. Help it home.").
- Status at the end of Saga VI: five soul-guns; the dark ring from Nagel's door on his palm; can never dream the cabin himself (he goes there instead; its door now open to anyone who knocks); carries the Null's longing with Rougeina; says the eight and the homesick one every day.
