SMURJAN · K-IV SHAPED · Scalelist #2,201 · Wrath → #1,602 after defeating Vigolas in the HADOM Arena (ch. 43), the first name ever to sit above the unnumbered man.

Look

  • Build & height: 1.95 m, gaunt and long-limbed, with a monk's economy of muscle. He stands very straight and very still.
  • Face: long and calm, with high cheekbones and a mouth that rarely moves. Three eyes: two grey-blue ones, and a third eye in the centre of the forehead, the same grey-blue, usually closed. When it opens it is rimmed in crimson, and his sin-mark shows: a thin crimson line drawn across the third eye like a sightline.
  • Hair: long and white, worn as a single white braid to the waist. (His twin-souls carry the other colours: Kali's braid is red; the missing fourth piece, Bali, has a black one.)
  • Skin: slate-grey from the heart outward, darker after every respawn. Since the Wrath Codex opened (ch. 41), faint crimson script-scars cover his chest, shoulders, arms and throat like old writing under skin. They glow when he walks the Sightline.
  • Clothing, layer by layer: wrapped grey under-linen · a long tri-coloured robe in void-black, hunger-red and ash-grey (Trinity's colours), torn and patched after every death · a rope sash · barefoot.
  • Signature item: three shadows. Wherever he stands, the light throws three: his own, Kali's (one-armed since ch. 31) and Bakasura's (huge, all mouth).
  • Movement: he walks in exact, unhurried steps, never a wasted motion, and in a fight he moves half an inch. His shadows move a moment before or after him, depending on who inside is paying attention.
  • Voice: quiet and measured. He speaks of the body as "we" and "us". When Kali or Bakasura cut in, their voices come out of his mouth (Kali sharp and fast, Bakasura slow and deep). Under all of it, faintly, is the murmur of the consumed voices (eighteen in Saga I; seventeen, Marka among them, since Torbjörn). His balloons have a faint double outline.
  • Variant looks: Respawned: robes torn, skin greyer, a small wrongness each time (a different accent, a missing word, a new habit). Codex-open: crimson script blazing across the whole body. Third eye POV: the world as grey diagram lines with one crimson point.

Power

  • The consumed: over the centuries Bakasura ate seventeen people, and they live on inside as voices. In Saga I ch. 15 the eighteenth was Marka, who held Bakasura's jaws open so children could escape; her voice is heard at most once per saga. In Saga II ch. 73 Old Torbjörn, the ferryman and the first of the consumed, gave himself up to hold the hunger shut and was lost forever. That leaves seventeen voices (sixteen consumed plus Marka).
  • Respawn: whatever dies in Trinity, and Smurjan everywhere, comes back slightly altered. He has died at least twice on the page (Saga I). Each time something changed: he came back once without the word "boat", and Marka's voice gave it back to him (ch. 28).
  • Salt-fire (Saltbrand, Saga II) is the one thing that stops the respawn: what dies in salt-fire stays dead. Kali's arm never grew back.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 600 (K-IV), but see below.
  • Home tempo: Trinity, very fast.
  • Heartbeat technique: THE TRIPLE PULSE. Three souls means three heartbeats in one chest, beating at the same instant. Inside a single beat, Smurjan, Kali and Bakasura can each act fully: a Sightline strike, a sickle cut and a bite, in the same heartbeat, from three directions. His effective tempo is ×3 when all three agree, and less than one when they argue (the shadows trip over each other). No one else has more than one heartbeat.
  • Burn cost: a full Triple Pulse makes the three voices louder for days afterwards, and the seventeen voices start talking too. He loses sleep and edges toward the drift.

The price

Every respawn alters him. His personality drifts: a word gone, a habit changed, a voice slightly louder. He is the same man less and less. The Arena price is also his: Smurjan defeated Vigolas holds in every life, and he has to live with the fact that he won because his friend gave it away.

Weaknesses

  • Salt-fire (Saltbrand): stops the respawn. What dies in it stays dead.
  • Arguing souls: when Kali, Bakasura and Smurjan disagree, the Triple Pulse collapses below one.
  • Bakasura's hunger: if it breaks loose (Saga II Arc 5), the maw eats friend and foe.
  • The drift: one day he may respawn as someone the crew doesn't know.

Gear & companions

  • Kali (inside) · Bakasura (inside) · the seventeen voices (sixteen consumed plus Marka; Torbjörn lost in Saga II).
  • The fracture-record shard, the Archive shard recording his own splitting. Rougeina took it back from Baldr's desk (ch. 26) and gave it to him. Vigolas: "Keep it. You earned it." (ch. 28) He carries it himself.
  • No weapon. His open palm is the weapon.

How they fight

Precision over power. He opens by standing still and reading. He lets enemies come and steps half an inch. Then he opens the third eye, finds the one point and walks the Sightline. When outnumbered he releases Kali (flank) and Bakasura (mass). Team combos: Sightline + Gold-Point (Vigolas sees value, Smurjan sees precision: the same spot) · Sightline → Tear-Swap (he finds the point, Rougeina appears there) · Kali-borrow + crew (Kali borrows a crewmate's sin for a two-of-us moment).

Personality

  • Wants: to free the voices inside him (seventeen since Torbjörn), and to find who split him (the fourth signature, Pride).
  • Fears: drifting into someone else; losing one of his voices forever; Bakasura's hunger.
  • Contradiction: a creature of Wrath who is the calmest person on the ship.
  • Humour: so deadpan it's funny ("We know." / "We know, captain."), with Kali's jokes coming out of his mouth.
  • Habits: meditates on the water; argues with himself about soup; bows to the dead; carries the fracture shard against his chest.
  • Alone: he listens to the seventeen, one at a time (and to the empty place where Torbjörn sang), so none of them feels forgotten.

Relationships

  • Vigolas: rival, then brother. Vigolas's lightning opened his Codex, and Vigolas yielded so that he wouldn't lose it forever. Now he stands in front of the captain in every fight.
  • Drekk: Marka was Drekk's captain and Bakasura ate her. Drekk hated him, then said "Good fight" (ch. 44), then put a hand on his shoulder (ch. 59). The slowest, most important thaw on the ship.
  • Kali & Bakasura: see their sheets. He loves them, and he is tired of them.
  • Marka: the eighteenth voice taken, and now one of seventeen. "Get up, big man." (her one Saga II line, ch. 76)
  • Kompis: reads Smurjan's threads and finds seventeen of them, all tied to one heart.
Story so far
  • I: enemy → crew. Marka consumed. Dies twice, and loses and regains "boat".
  • II: defeats Vigolas in the Arena (by yield), the Wrath Codex opens, and the Sightline is born. Kali loses her arm to salt-fire. Arc 5: Bakasura breaks loose; Old Torbjörn (the gentlest of the seventeen) is lost forever; Rule Five; Marka: "Get up, big man."
  • III: Bali arrives from the mirror for his sister. The Triple Pulse gets its name.
  • IV: the Echo reveal: he learns who split him.
  • VI: the Ascension: the consumed get bodies back, and Marka returns.
  • VI · Arc 1: names Stage IV ("The grey's not at the edge any more. It's soaked into everything, a little.") and why Mingus's dream stays gold ("He's an Immunity… Or what he dreams.", ch. 334).
  • VI · Arc 2: the Sightline can't clear the Twelfth Road's thorns (ch. 342); the Menders sew his three shadows to the rim-stone and Rougeina's Cross-Swap frees him (ch. 343). To Dolk: "Did you do this? The split?" / "No. That was a mirror. Mirrors don't apologise." (ch. 346).
  • VI · Arc 3: on the away team to Heartbeat (ch. 352); the seventeen go quiet in the cabin for the first time, and restless again outside it (ch. 359–360).
  • VI · Arc 4: "All seventeen of them just said no." (the Arbiter's THE FIVE MAY PASS, ch. 362). The Sightline drawn down the road to the Gate ("Nothing finishes what it can't catch.", ch. 363) and ruled for Svala's Long Line (ch. 368).
  • VI · Arc 5: the seventeen go silent before the Arbiter's first ending (ch. 373); floored, he lets himself go and rises (ch. 375). In the Great Ring: "They're quiet again… Like they're in church." / "…Oh. That's nice." (ch. 378). Lets Bakasura out to give Roffe his stone ("He wants to give something too.", ch. 379). Marka isn't in the stands of the dead: "She's not there. Good. She's here." (ch. 380).
  • VI · Arc 6: stands west, three shadows and seventeen faint faces. The plan: four yields and he stands ("He lost to me.", ch. 382). His head snaps back when Trollmage is hit (Rule Six as a flinch, ch. 383). Smurjan vs Kompis: the Whole Bite swallows Ivar's shot; Wrath answers on its own with the one correct strike and he turns it in the last half inch ("It wanted your heart. We gave it your collarbone."); "We are not going to kill each other. Are we." / "No." (ch. 383–384). Sigvat's decree falls off him like ash, and he catches Sigvat again and carries him into the Ring ("You finished your sentence. You don't owe it another.", ch. 385–386). The Sightline finds no point on the Arbiter (ch. 388); Triple Pulse in Ögar's beat (ch. 389).
  • VI · Arc 7: the Null takes one of the seventeen's faces (the voice stays, ch. 391); "That was the edge of it. This is the middle." (ch. 392). Speaks his Quoka in all three voices at once; Marka glimpsed among his line, no voice; tests that the five can't step away (ch. 393). Falls with the crew in the Long Night (ch. 399). Wrath I: the crimson map of wounds, and the Sightline finds a point at last, the knot's centre inside the door; Triple Pulse; open palm (ch. 400).
  • VI · Arc 8: Smurjan/Kali/Bakasura in one voice: "One." Anchors the knot through himself into Ferdinand (Wrath: the one correct action); his three heartbeats fall into step by choice. The seventeen sing the wordless song, the oldest woman loudest ("the best thing she's sung in four hundred years"; she'll sing on the ship).
  • Status at the end of Saga VI: K-IV SHAPED; four, by choice (Smurjan, Kali, Bakasura, Bali); no voices left inside (the seventeen walk in bodies; fifteen in Trinity, the oldest woman and Marka on the Marka); Torbjörn lost for good.
