Vigolas
VIGOLAS · ∞−1 · OFF THE LIST. The numerals glitch and blink gold. Since ch. 43 a small cold tag sits beside it: 1 defeat (HADOM). Since ch. 45: RECORD: CALLED 1 · YIELDED 1.
Look
- Build & height: 1.88 m. A sailor's lean, rope-strong build: long arms, wide hands with split knuckles, shoulders that slope forward when he grins. Never bulky. He moves like someone who grew up on a rolling deck.
- Face: narrow and sun-dark, with a sharp jaw and a crooked nose (broken twice). He has a wide grin that shows a chipped canine, and his laugh lines are deeper than his age. At rest he looks like he's about to steal something. When he's serious, the grin goes away completely, and that's how the crew knows it's bad.
- Hair: black-brown, shoulder-length, permanently windswept even indoors, as if a sea wind follows him. One thin braid behind his left ear, tied with a scrap of red sailcloth (from his first ship, whose name he no longer remembers).
- Eyes: emerald. When Greed-sight is on, the irises ring with thin gold, like coins edge-on.
- Skin & marks: a Lichtenberg scar, a fern-pattern of pale lightning-burn, runs from the left side of his neck down his left arm to the wrist (the storm that drowned him). Over his heart is the Arena's brand, invisible except when he takes his shirt off in cold light: a square stamp of cold white light, ch. 43. No sin-mark shows: the board can't place one. When he uses a Black Soul command, black-green script flickers across his knuckles and vanishes.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a sleeveless sea-shirt of undyed linen, open at the throat · a wide emerald sash wound three times round the waist (pockets of the sash hold his cubes) · black sailcloth trousers tucked into cork-soled sea-boots · a midnight-green long coat with salt-white cuffs, the tails cut ragged. Into the coat's lining are sewn the 38 Archive shards (36 after Saga I), each in its own little pocket, so the coat clinks when he runs.
- Signature item: the coat that clinks. Second: his Compass, a battered brass sea-compass on a cord round his neck whose needle spins and never settles (it has no north until he decides what he values most).
- Movement: he never walks a straight line. He hops onto railings, crates and other people's tables. In a fight he leads with his shoulders and laughs mid-swing. When he stops moving entirely, something terrible is about to happen.
- Voice: loud, warm and fast, a sea-shanty rhythm with a lot of "Ha!". His balloons are big and slightly jagged. He gives everyone nicknames ("big man", "lazy one", "buddy").
- Variant looks: Drowned (ch. 1 flashback): soaked, a gold coin in his teeth. Arena (Saga II): shirtless in the storm, green lightning crawling the Lichtenberg scar. Older (Saga V+): a grey streak at the temple; he has started to forget faces, and he squints at people.
Power
Spoken commands that override the world's rules for one thing, at one place. He regains one command per saga, and every command takes a memory the moment it comes back to him (the table below). The size rule: after that, a command used within his own measure (roughly anything he could carry: a Sentinel, a doorway, a falling stone) costs only tempo. A command used beyond his measure (a house, a hall, a mountain) takes another, smaller memory every time. Saga I: the Protocol Hall fold took his mother's face (ch. 21), and the falling-towers fold took the name of his first crewmate (ch. 25). Saga II: folding the Arbiter's mountain-sized full stop took "something small" he hasn't noticed yet (ch. 46). It is a time bomb for Saga III.
| Saga | Command | What it does | Memory it took |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | COMPACT | Folds a volume of space, and everything in it, into a dice- to fist-sized cube. He keeps the cubes ("Greed keeps everything") and can unfold them later. | His first ship's name |
| II | ERASE | Wipes a thing from where it stands, but not from the count: it is gone from here, not from existence | His mother's song |
| III | REMOVE | Takes one ability away from someone: an open palm on them, the ability held as a burning knot in his shut fist ("Hand's full": no other command while he holds it) for at most sixty of Mingus's heartbeats, then it flies home. It can't take an Architect's office. | The face of his first captain, Captain Hild (Saga III ch. 90). He keeps her voice, her braids and her rule: "Nobody gets left on the wrong side of the rail." |
| IV | RECREATE | Makes a destroyed thing again, exactly as it was | The taste of salt (a pirate who can't taste the sea) |
| V | DESPAWN | Sends a thing back to before it arrived. It can't unmake anything; it sends it back where it came from. First used ch. 273: not on Gnag but on the bite of Ferdinand inside him, which flew back into the Great Root, and the wound un-bit ("Not you. That. Go back to before you arrived.") | His first word |
| VI | ALTERNATE | Swaps one outcome for another | Kompis's name, for one terrible chapter (recovered): taken ch. 356, pinned back for ever by Nagel's Memory-Pin ch. 358 |
| later | UPGRADE | Raises anything one rank | — |
| late | SLA (Sever the Last Anchor) | Cuts a thing loose from the world's count. Dangerous: it is the Null's own move. | — |
| final | SH | A whisper: "Shh." It silences every override in existence, including his own. | — |
Greed-sight (passive): the world glows by value. Treasure burns gold, people glow by what they're worth to someone, and a weak point is the brightest gold spot on a body, a wall or a spell. Greed-sight finds value. It can't find meaning, so it's blind to things that are worth nothing to anyone (see Ingen, Saga II Arc 5).
Green lightning: the storm that drowned him came back inside him. He wraps his fists in emerald lightning. It isn't a command and it has no memory cost, but it drains him like a sprint. In dreams (Sömnen) it came out as snow.
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: uncountable (∞−1). He can fit every action but one into a single heartbeat, but he rarely burns full: it hurts.
- Heartbeat technique: THE MINUS ONE. At full burn, inside one heartbeat, Vigolas can do every possible action but one, and he must name the one he gives up before the beat lands. Whatever he names, he cannot do for the rest of that fight: "I won't dodge." "I won't let go." "I won't win." It's greed's hardest lesson turned into a technique: to take everything, you have to choose what to leave. First used: foreshadowed in the Arena (ch. 43, "I yield" is the Minus One done with no technique at all). Named on the page: Saga III ch. 109, "I give up kneeling", standing under the whole weight of Tyngden in his own coat. It cost one heartbeat, and he couldn't kneel for the rest of the fight (ch. 110). Saga VI: "I give up standing still." · "I give up leaving this door." (ch. 412, a vow over Krydog's sleep, held eleven days and an afternoon, ended ch. 417).
- Burn cost: every full burn stops his own heart for one beat. He's lived seven lives; the eighth body has fewer spare beats than he thinks.
Techniques
| Technique | What it does | Cost | First shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emerald Knuckle | A lightning-wrapped punch. At full charge it throws a column of green fire thick as a tree trunk | Stamina; leaves him shaking | Ch. 1 · full column ch. 41 |
| COMPACT | Fold space into a cube | (paid: the ship's name) · tempo | Ch. 1 · ch. 264 (one plank, with a splinter of Flisa halfway out of it: a fist-sized bark cube with her furious face in one side) |
| Unfold | Throws a kept cube and unfolds it, releasing whatever was folded inside (two Sentinels and a ton of beach, ch. 3) | Loses the cube forever | Ch. 3 · ch. 271 |
| Gold-Point | Greed-sight locks on the one gold weak point; his next blow lands there | Tunnel vision: he stops seeing anything worthless, including traps | Ch. 2 |
| ERASE | Wipe a thing from where it stands | (paid: his mother's song) · tempo | Ch. 40 |
| Captain's Pull | Grabs a crewmate by the collar and throws them exactly where they need to be, by value: the most valuable spot on the battlefield | They land hard | Saga II |
| The Minus One | See 4 | One heartbeat of his own life | Named Saga III |
| DESPAWN | Sends a thing back to before it arrived. Within his measure (a mouthful, a thing he could carry) it costs only tempo after the return-cost | (paid: his first word) · tempo | Ch. 273 (Gnag's bite of the Great Root) |
| Taking the Second Blow (unpowered) | Throws himself over a rival who's about to be floored twice in one beat, and takes the second blow across his own back | Driven into the ground to his knees, blood in his teeth | Ch. 272 (over Krydog: "You'd have burst. Then who'd I draw with?") |
| ALTERNATE | Swaps one outcome for another: what was meant for one thing lands on another. An outcome isn't a thing, so the size rule takes no extra memory | (paid: Kompis's name for one chapter, recovered ch. 358) · tempo | Ch. 356 (the ending meant for Heartbeat lands on the completion-hunters) |
| Verdict Cube | The cube he folded from the Arbiter's falling full stop (ch. 46). Unfolded, it is a decision that's already been made, solid. | None shown | Ch. 404 (Exhibit One in Daniel's appeal: "Your own sentence has no full stop."); ch. 405 he COMPACTs the full stop of THE END. into it (two full stops in one box) |
| REMOVE → SH | The rest of the ladder | Memories | Saga III → the end |
Weaknesses
- No shape, no grip: COMPACT can't fold a feeling (Mörda, ch. 52). ERASE inside someone's mind could erase the person, so he won't use it there.
- Nothing to take: Ingen (Bastion, Saga II Arc 5) owns nothing, even his name, so Greed-sight sees no value in him and COMPACT can't grip him.
- The brightest absence: to Hrafnkell's scent-of-absence, ∞−1 is a beacon. He can always be found.
- The wave: his worst memory, the storm and the wave he steered into for gold. Mörda rides it, and the Arena builds itself out of it.
- Greed itself: he grabs first and thinks after. He will reach for a shiny thing in the middle of a fight.
- Arena Rule One: his one Arena defeat (a yield to Smurjan) is permanent across every life.
Gear & companions
- The cubes, carried in the sash: the verdict cube (black, starlight letters crawling over it, ch. 46; Exhibit One, ch. 404; two full stops in it since ch. 405), the Hound-ship (white and gold, fist-sized, ch. 64), and in the Glasheim bark-yard crater the house-sized Protocol Hall cube he means to come back for (ch. 25). He never throws one away; he only spends them.
- The Compass, no north yet.
- The 36 shards in his coat lining: the files of everyone's fate, the reason the whole world chases him.
- The Flisa cube (spent): a fist-sized bark cube folded from one Marka plank with a splinter of Flisa halfway out of it, her furious little face squashed into one side (ch. 264). It rode in his sash for seven chapters ("Ow.", when it couldn't swell, ch. 268). It never touched iron, so when the Root-Eater's strippers ringed her and pinned her with an iron ring-spike, it was the only safe door of hers on the island: he threw it into the ring, "Unfold.", it opened back into a plank with one gold glint, and she dropped into it out of her pinned shell (ch. 271). "You folded me." / "I kept you." · "Spent it. Don't tell anyone, it's bad for my reputation."
- Iron nails in his coat pocket, torn out of the strippers' ring round Flisa with his bare hands, palms ripped ("Iron. Lovely. I collect these.", ch. 266).
- The Kettle's bell, now on the Marka's bow. He talks to it. (Borrowed again for Krydog vs Vigolas II: "STOP TAKING MY BELL.", Drekk, ch. 259.) The fish, kept since Fyren, "not fresh" (ch. 259).
- The Lumen wick, lit from Iskall's lamp, hanging in the Marka's rigging ("When you forget what it's for, look at it.", ch. 263).
- A splinter of Flisa in his boot heel (ch. 264, ch. 275: "Boo. From inside your keel.").
- The Marka, his ship (Drekk steers; Vigolas captains, which mostly means pointing). Since ch. 275 she's half Jeppson's (every chalk patch keeps) and leans left in a crosswind on Stav's hair-off keel: "Good. So did Camilla."
How they fight
A brawler who fights like a pirate boarding a ship: straight in, shoulders first, laughing. He opens with Greed-sight and a Gold-Point punch, folds anything dangerous with COMPACT, and saves ERASE for what must not exist here. He doesn't defend; he takes hits and keeps coming. Team combos: Captain's Pull → Rougeina's Swap (he throws her toward a spot, she Swaps the rest of the way) · Gold-Point → Smurjan's Sightline (two kinds of seeing, value and precision, landing on the same spot) · COMPACT + Trollmage's MACRO (the troll multiplies a cube's contents).
Personality
- Wants: to be number one, and then to break the board so nobody is ranked again. He wants everything, and more and more he means people.
- Fears: the wave, the moment he chose gold over his crew. Losing people. Being kept.
- Contradiction: a greedy man who keeps giving things away (the Arena win, Lärka's life, Vaka's sleep, the Flisa cube, the cut plank). He doesn't understand why, and now he never can: "I'm a great thief. I just keep giving it back. Don't know why." (ch. 275).
- His joy (Iskall's Look, ch. 256): not gold. The Marka's deck at night, the whole crew asleep round the fire, and himself awake on the rail watching them. "That's not gold." / "No. It's better." He lives it again at the end of the arc ("…Better than gold.", ch. 263).
- Humour: constant, loud, self-mocking ("I didn't start it." / "You looked like you were going to.").
- Habits: talks to the Kettle's bell; hoards bottle caps, buttons, cubes and now iron nails; climbs the mast to think; says "Mine" about things that are not his.
- Alone: he sits at the bow and hums, trying to find a song that isn't there. (Since Saga IV he has the four notes back; he hums them on the Marka's rail in ch. 275.)
Relationships
- Kompis + Mingus: his best friend, the spy who chose him. Vigolas would trade the board for him, and nearly does (Saga VI: ALTERNATE takes Kompis's name).
- Rougeina: the thief who stole a shard off his own coat on day one. Sparring partners, mutual respect, and she laughs at his jokes and pretends she doesn't.
- Trollmage: "the lazy one". Vigolas buys him time, always, without being asked.
- Smurjan: rival, then brother. Vigolas yielded to him in the Arena so Smurjan wouldn't lose his Codex forever. "Smurjan defeated Vigolas" holds in every life. Smurjan now stands in front of him in every fight: "He lost to me."
- Drekk: the grumpy navigator. Vigolas never steers; he only points.
- His first crew: drowned by his greed, and they forgave him in the Arena (two-finger salute, ch. 43).
- Jorvand / Redactor: the man who made him. A mirror with the opposite dream.
- Krydog (captain of the Upp Igen): rival captain, then sworn brother; nobody ranked against anybody can get up. Krydog vs Vigolas II · Lumen (ch. 259), a draw: with his fury in a jar, he picks a fight with a man whose will to rise is in another, to get him up: a flick, sitting on his chest, an Emerald Knuckle with no anger in it, the Kettle's bell, the fish. "You don't get up because you want to. You get up because you always have." Krydog rises with nothing in him, they trade blows, and both sit down at once: "Draw?" / "Draw." In the Splinterlands he takes Krydog's second blow inside one beat (ch. 272: "You took my second one." / "You'd have burst. Then who'd I draw with?"), and Krydog calls him greedy for it ("You took my second one. And his bite." / "I collect things.", ch. 273). Side by side at every charge: "GET OFF HIM!" (ch. 271).
- Flisa: she told him the ship wasn't his ("Give. Him. Back." / "No. She's mine.", ch. 264) and climbed out of his boot ("Boo."). He folded her into a cube, then tore the iron nails out of her ring with his bare hands ("I owe you NOTHING." / "Didn't ask.", ch. 266), then spent the cube to save her (ch. 271: Hild's rule, "You've been on it since the day they launched her."). He carried the cut plank to the first strip and gave it back (ch. 275). "I still hate you." / "I know."
- Iskall: the lamplighter who showed him his joy wasn't gold (ch. 255–256: "Is it, though?"). "Come with us." / "I'm the lamplighter, pirate." (ch. 263)
- Isa: he has tried to make her laugh properly since Stilla, and Tihi got there first ("I was supposed to make her laugh properly!", ch. 263).
- Gnag, the Root-Eater : "No wood on you. Not hungry for you." "Oi. Supper." … "That's why I'm not scared of you." He sent the one bite home (ch. 273).
Story so far
- I · The Satchel: COMPACT. Steals the shards, gathers a crew, and makes the First Sign happen with them.
- II · The Call: ERASE. Loses his mother's song, yields in the Arena, learns that some things are worth more than winning.
- III · The Architect War: REMOVE. The Minus One gets its name. His Compass finds north: the crew. The Greed Codex opens.
- IV · The Twelfth Chair: RECREATE (ch. 165, cost: the taste of salt). Buys back his ship's name, CAMILLA THE SERAPHIM, on Skatt. Learns his seven lives and that Jorvand (Redactor) made the ∞−1 (one rank subtracted per life, then the count rolled over). Refuses the ninth line: "Key or door? Neither. I'm the CAPTAIN." The Minus One: "I give up being made." Gets his memories back free from Levla, and his fear of the dark from Jorvand.
- V · The Current: DESPAWN. The Deep Current, Hallbard's Beam, his first word gone.
- Arc 3 · Lumen (ch. 255–263): tells Iskall his joy is gold; it's the crew asleep round the fire (ch. 256). Skymning bottles his fury (ch. 257: "Why was I running?"); without it he punches Dimmers calmly ("Sorry. I'm not even cross.") and fights Krydog vs Vigolas II, a draw, to get the captain up (ch. 259). The Seven Towers crack the jars and his fury comes home: "THERE it is!" (ch. 261). He lets Skymning row away ("He's going somewhere. Hallbard would light him.", ch. 262).
- Arc 4 · The Splinterlands (ch. 264–275): COMPACTs a splinter of Flisa (ch. 264); tears out the strippers' iron nails with bare hands (ch. 266); spends the Flisa cube to free her (ch. 271); takes Krydog's second blow (ch. 272); runs through all four commands he has and finds none that sends the bite home, and the fifth arrives: DESPAWN returns, and takes his first word (ch. 272–273). He sends Ferdinand's heartwood back out of Gnag and the Great Root un-bites. Asks Kompis what his first word was ("'Mine.'"), then gives the cut plank back to the first strip: "…Here." (ch. 275). Gain: DESPAWN; a Splinterlands that remembers him. Loss: his first word, for good, without ever knowing it.
- VI · The Third Sign: ALTERNATE (takes Kompis's name for one chapter). The Convergence: the five are one.
- After: UPGRADE, SLA, and in the end SH, the whisper that silences every override, his own included. No forced end.
- VI · Arc 2: ERASE wipes a hundred yards of the Twelfth Road's thorns and they crawl back (ch. 342). Afraid of the dark, goes down the chalk stair anyway with Aska's ember in his fist; Vider signs him [Loud.] (ch. 343). Refuses a Mender's needle for his black handprint ("That's a bill. I'm paying it.", ch. 344). Brushes Dolk's Strip-Guard pulling strips off his mouth ("…What am I doing down here?", ch. 345). "Give me one.": takes the first ending anyone ever took off Dolk ("Greed keeps everything. Even the junk.", ch. 346). Finds nothing in his coat that wouldn't fall apart in Dolk's hand: "…I'll find you something." (ch. 350).
- VI · Arc 3: "Yours is mine. That's how greed works." (ch. 351). An Emerald Knuckle finished on a grey palm (DONE., ch. 352); throws the woodpile instead ("That log's been finished since the AUTUMN!", ch. 353). ALTERNATE comes home (ch. 356): the ending meant for Heartbeat lands on the completion-hunters (snow-covered statues), the realm's reset pours back; the return takes Kompis's name (a whole wall of pictures of one word comes down). The one terrible chapter (ch. 357): said to him, the name slides off; written, it won't hold. Nagel's Memory-Pin (ch. 358): "Kompis… KOMPIS. It's staying!", a faint knot-mark on his brow, the name pinned for ever. Says it in the dark to hear it stay (ch. 359). First sight of the Arena: "Every time it Called me." (ch. 360).
- VI · Arc 4: the fleet's council wants him; he refuses ("I need someone down here who won't stay down.") and names Krydog (ch. 362). Can't ERASE the Great Chain ("They'd finish the word halfway", ch. 363). Empties his coat of finished things at the hunters ("Greed keeps everything. Turns out it's AMMUNITION.") and guards his unfinished list of sixteen ships (ch. 365). Points Svala's Long Line (ch. 368).
- VI · Arc 5: the thunderhead's Storm-Answer through Kompis's Thread-Pull, both bolts on the Order's flagship (ch. 376). Holds Jeppson's chalk-line reel, badly, for the last spans; AT DAWN. / "Then we've got time for dinner." (ch. 377). Steals Njord's fish for Roffe (ch. 379). To Krydog: "I need someone who won't stay down." / "I'll be standing." (ch. 379). Finds Hild and his drowned first crew in the stands of the dead: "I left all of you there." Takes Jeppson's chalk stub (ch. 380).
- VI · Arc 6: stands east. Yields at once: A YIELD BEFORE A BLOW IS NOT A YIELD. (ch. 382). Folds Trollmage's casting-space with a gentle COMPACT ("He is, briefly, a man."); an Emerald Knuckle he means to miss lands full (ch. 383). Lowers his fists to Rougeina (ch. 384). Takes his old bosun's axe on his forearm: "They forgave me. Don't you dare make them take it back." (ch. 385). Carries Captain Hild into Emma's Ring on her own rule, sets her down: "…Here."; she straightens his collar (ch. 386). Greed-sight finds no value in the Arbiter ("Every bit of it is somebody's last second.", ch. 388). In Ögar's one beat: a chalk line to the Ring with Jeppson's stub, Minus One: "I give up standing still." and a Captain's Pull on Trollmage (ch. 389). Hild taps his Compass; afraid of the dark, he walks to the rope's edge anyway ("He isn't anyone.", ch. 390).
- VI · Arc 7: first out of the Ring toward the Null ("I'm terrified. Thought you should know."); loses the fourth note of his mother's song and Trollmage hums it back (ch. 391). "COMPACT." and every command after it lands nowhere: "It's not refusing my commands. It's not receiving them." A command that lands nowhere costs no memory (ch. 392). Speaks the first Quoka, to Kompis (ch. 392–393). Can't stand still all arc (the Minus One holds for the whole match: "Then don't stand still, captain. Just don't leave."). Falls with the crew in the Long Night and pushes his ember to the dog: "…Here."; sees the cabin dream: "Better than gold." (ch. 399). Greed I: KEYSTONE lands on the knot's centre; its price, one heartbeat alone in the dark ("Still here."), then "That's the most valuable thing I've ever seen." (ch. 400).
- VI · Arc 8: "We're the same person." (first, as always). Remembers Fenna ("You said somebody was going to be very upset that I exist… You were right."). Exhibit One: throws Daniel the verdict cube. Catches the full stop of THE END. and COMPACTs it into the verdict cube (two full stops in one box: "Greed keeps everything."). COMPACT lands on the Null (ch. 406): a cube blacker than the verdict cube; beyond his measure it takes the red of the Camilla's sails (he doesn't know what: "Something small."). No SH. Ch. 409: "Neither. I'm a captain."; holds out his hand: "Here—", and the word catches (he never learns why); Jorvand takes it. "Sleep, old man."
- Status at the end of Saga VI: six commands (COMPACT → ALTERNATE); KEYSTONE; the verdict cube holds two full stops (ch. 46 + ch. 405); Kompis's name pinned for ever (knot-mark on his brow); still lost: what was in the hold, Hild's first star, the taste of salt, his first word (he never learns it), and the red of the Camilla's sails (ch. 406; he doesn't know what he lost); a cork chair in Helios, and he still comes home to the Marka.
