Runa is his great-(many)-grandmother and the original carver of the runes he reads. Apprentice Nock is his current disciple; the Eighth Codex's Apprenticeship binding ties them together.
Backward Read — speaks the last word of a Codex page first, then the second-to-last, then the third-to-last, until the page is complete. The page's *meaning* assembles itself in reality as he reads. Most listeners go briefly mad. He has not.
