OSWIN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Five, Keeper of the Index (ch. 208 P29). After ch. 218 his Signet still glows faint on the Fifth Chair, "occupied by someone nobody can find."

Look

  • Build & height: 2.06 m, very tall, very thin, stooped like a question mark (ch. 208). Long arms, long careful fingers that pluck stars out of light. He folds himself onto bollards and benches like a heron.
  • Face: long and narrow, a dry, polite, exhausted smile (ch. 208). Deep lines of tiredness, a scholar's frown that never fully leaves. When something gentle reaches him, "something in his dry, polite face breaking very gently" (ch. 218).
  • Hair: thin and grey-brown, combed flat and forgotten about; a few strands always loose over the spectacles.
  • Eyes: pale hazel behind three pairs of spectacles stacked on his nose. The star-map wheels across the lenses (ch. 208 P31).
  • Skin & mark: pale from a life underground, ink on the fingertips. No sin-mark. The Signet on the back of his plucking hand.
  • Clothing, layer by layer: a grey linen shirt · a buttoned grey waistcoat · a long grey-green coat with a hundred small labelled pockets, each label in his tiny hand · scuffed indoor shoes worn smooth by a corridor walked every morning.
  • Signature item: the lantern on a pole, whose light throws a slowly wheeling map of stars across every wall he passes. Every star is a filed thing. In Saga IV, also the leather satchel that clinks like glass.
  • Movement: slow, weary, apologetic; he walks his corridor counter-clockwise every morning. His plucking is quick and precise, one, two, three. When misfiled, his panels should feel like the reader's eye keeps sliding past him: draw him at the edge of the panel, cut by the border, half behind a bollard.
  • Voice: mild, dry, polite, tired; the voice of a librarian telling you the book is in the basement. "…He can't hear a word I say. It's quite restful." (ch. 209). Balloons: thin and neat, each with a tiny index tab on the tail (a label). When he's misfiled, his balloons float "somewhere beside" the speaker with no visible tail at all (ch. 218: OSWIN (somewhere beside him)).
  • Variant looks: The Fifth Chair (thin, labelled, in the Council ring) · With the satchel (ch. 208: coming down the jetty at dusk with eleven glowing shards) · Misfiled (ch. 213–218: drawn faint, edge-of-panel, the eye sliding off him) · On the bollard (ch. 218: lantern in his lap, half its stars dark, very old).

Power

Every star on his map is a filed thing. He plucks one out of the light and sets it somewhere else, and the thing it stands for is misfiled: still there, still itself, still in colour, but no eye can find it and no hand can reach for it on purpose. Sentinels look straight past the crew an arm's length away ("…Did you hear something?" / "…I was about to say something. I've forgotten what.", ch. 210).

  • FIND: he can also find anything that has ever been filed. His lantern found Vider's star "far off at its very edge, alone" (ch. 210); it saw records being refiled toward the Vault (ch. 212: "She knows. She's pulling records into the Vault.").
  • Self-misfile: he can pluck his own star. In ch. 213, against a writ broadcast through Skrubb's LOUD ("BY THE HAND OF THE SECOND CHAIR: OSWIN DRAEKHOLM."), he misfiled himself, and the ash letters O-S-W-I-N circled and fell as dust: "The writ can't find what isn't filed." In ch. 218 he set his star nowhere.
  • What it can't do:
    • Hide from accident. A misfiled thing can still be found by accident: a stumble, a groping hand, someone not looking. "Don't bump them. Misfiled things can be found by accident." (ch. 210).
    • Mingus was never filed. There's nothing to misfile. He bumped a Sentinel's knee with his nose and the Sentinel saw "a dog, and nothing else" (ch. 210). In ch. 218 Mingus watches the empty path where Oswin walks, wagging, and follows him a few steps: the dog sees him.
    • ∞−1 fits on no shelf ("Item does not fit on any shelf.", ch. 210).
    • The Null: misfiling is never uncounting. Nothing greys, no name vanishes. His index flinches from the window: "…Even the index is afraid of him." (ch. 215).
    • Survive the lantern. Smash it, and everything misfiled falls back where it belongs.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 5,500: stars moved, not blows.
  • Home tempo: the Ring of Indices, where the whole world's record wheels on the walls at once.
  • Heartbeat technique: SEE ALSO. Inside one heartbeat he moves every star in his lantern's reach at once, back and forth, so every eye, writ, hound and grey hand in range is pointed somewhere else: see also, a reference to a shelf that isn't there. It's how the crew ran the Ring of Indices: "moving the crew's places back and forth faster than the Shelvers can read them" (ch. 210). No one else refiles a whole room in one beat. (Rougeina swaps one place; Oswin re-addresses everything.)
  • Burn cost: a room of himself per star. Every misfile files away a room of his own memory. A full burn of See Also files away a whole floor of it: in ch. 210, "…My first school… the smell of my father's pipe… keep moving…" went in one run. That is why he can no longer find his way home. The HADOM OVERFLOW line he never crosses is himself: past it, there'd be no Oswin left to remember where anything is.

The price

Every misfile files away a room of his own memory. On the page: "There was a room… in my mother's house… with a blue door… No. It's gone. Filed." (ch. 210) · "…My first school… the smell of my father's pipe…" (ch. 210) · "There goes… the kitchen of the house where I was born. Pity. It smelled of cardamom." (ch. 213). "I've misfiled so much I can't find my way home. I sleep in a corridor. It's a nice corridor." (ch. 210). By ch. 218: "A house with a blue door. A kitchen that smelled of cardamom. That's all I've got left of it."

Weaknesses

  • Accidents: a bump, a stumble, a dog.
  • The lantern: his tool. Smash it and every misfile snaps back.
  • The Shelvers' mistake: what's misfiled shows as gaps on the map ("Nine items. Returning to correct location.", ch. 210), so his own clerks can hunt what he hides. Trollmage's MACRO : SHELF = FULL stopped them.
  • His own fear: he hid the shards "even from myself", and almost lost his nerve ("Before I lose my nerve, or my way home.", ch. 208).
  • Never beaten. He turned. Rougeina never kills him.

Gear & companions

  • The star-lantern on its pole (his tool of office).
  • The satchel of eleven shards, packed in straw, "each one glowing faintly from within, and in each one, tiny, thousands of faces" (ch. 208); later stuffed with Solvig's stolen white pages (ch. 214).
  • The coat of a hundred labelled pockets.
  • The Shelvers (SHELVER · K-I · Archive Indexing): grey clerks who put things, and people, back where they "belong". At the Ring Halls under Codexia they drilled brass core-tubes into Eken for the Order's war records ("We don't strike him. We sample. Architect Five needs the war records.", ch. 138). In ch. 210 they tried to shelve the crew: Smurjan toward TRINITY · SPLIT · CASE CLOSED, Isa toward STILLA · DO NOT DISTURB, Rougeina toward ASSET · ROUTING STUDY, Kompis toward NURSERY · INTAKE K. (Bror: "He's NOT going back there.").

How they fight

He doesn't fight; he relocates. He opens by misfiling his allies so nobody can see them coming; mid-fight he keeps moving the map faster than anyone can read it (See Also); and he finishes by taking the enemy's tool while she can't see him (Solvig's paper, ch. 214). His best work is done before a fight: forty years of hidden evidence. Team combos: Oswin + Hjalmar (the Ledger says where a soul was born; the lantern finds where it is now: Vider, ch. 210) · Oswin + Trollmage (MACRO : SHELF = FULL locks every drawer while Oswin keeps moving stars) · Oswin + Ysel (she knows the way in; he makes sure nobody sees them use it, ch. 213) · Oswin + Öde (she writes down the home he's losing).

Personality

  • Wants: to stop hiding, and to find his way home.
  • Fears: being found by the Order; finding out how much of himself is already filed.
  • Contradiction: the Keeper of the Index, whose whole office is finding things, can't find his own house; the man who keeps the world's records kept the one record the Order wanted lost.
  • Humour: dry and resigned. "It's a nice corridor." · "…He can't hear a word I say. It's quite restful." · "…I'd only misfile your ship."
  • Habits: walks his corridor counter-clockwise every morning; adjusts his spectacles before saying anything true; holds the lantern in his lap when he's tired.
  • Alone: in his corridor, under the wheeling map, trying to remember which star is the blue door.

Relationships

  • Öde: sat down beside him on the jetty without being asked, asked where home was, and wrote it on her arm in place-ink: a blue door · cardamom. "…Now it's somewhere." / "…Thank you. I'll know where to look, if I ever stop being lost." (ch. 218).
  • Solvig: the colleague whose every erasure he kept in glass; he stole her paper. "…No one's keeping it. No one's holding it back." (ch. 217).
  • Aldhrun: the reason he came down the mountain.
  • Hjalmar: the First Chair, left alone: "Two. And one of us is lost. So: one." (ch. 218).
  • Vigolas: "This is the best power I've ever seen." (ch. 210). Invited him aboard; "I'd only misfile your ship."
  • Mingus: never filed; the only one who sees him go (ch. 218). Kompis: "…Who are you waving at, boy?" (Nobody. Everybody.)
  • Rougeina: took a shard from him without asking: "…Nobody remembers any of them." / "Nobody but the glass. And now you." (ch. 209).
  • Vider: found by his lantern; Oswin wrote to him on a slate at the rim ("The Second Chair. Solvig. She keeps the window.", ch. 211).
  • Skrubb: the deaf Chief Cleaner who shouted his name at him.
  • Eken: his Shelvers' drills; a grudge.
Story so far
  • III · The Architect War: the Shelvers drilling Eken (ch. 138); "a thin archivist in the Fifth", one of four who sit (ch. 143).
  • IV · The Twelfth Chair: Arc 6 hook (ch. 208: the satchel). Arc 7: the shards and Skrubb (ch. 209); misfiles the crew up the Spine, the Shelvers, the Scriptorium (ch. 210); finds Vider (ch. 210–211); sees Solvig pulling records (ch. 212); misfiles himself against the writ (ch. 213); steals her paper (ch. 214); the index flinches from the window (ch. 215); "Bigger than you, pirate. It'll cost you." (ch. 216); the map wheeling toward the open window (ch. 217); misfiles himself for good (ch. 218). The Archive's index goes dark. His Signet stays faint on the Fifth Chair (ch. 220, 229). Gain: he stopped hiding the truth. Loss: home.
