Look

  • Build & height: 1.68 m, straight-backed and solid, with a walker's legs and a healer's strong forearms. She stands like someone who once stood in one place for three days and could do it again. Age 38 at debut.
  • Face: oval and calm, faintly freckled across the nose, with fine lines at the eyes and a level mouth. A thin white scar crosses the bridge of her nose: a Sentinel's gauntlet, the day she was ten. At rest she is listening, as if someone has just asked her something.
  • Hair: auburn, in one thick braid to the waist, tied off with a strip of clean bandage. A strand goes grey for every hundred heartbeats the Keeping Beat costs her. At debut a few grey threads already run through it from five years aboard the Upp Igen. In Saga VI the whole braid goes white.
  • Eyes: warm brown with gold flecks. When Lust-sight is on the flecks brighten, and she sees the threads between people as Kompis does. She only ever reads them. She has never tied or pulled one in her life.
  • Skin & sin-mark: fair, freckled hands, chalk on the fingertips. Lust, gold (the threads between people). Gold threads circle both wrists like bracelets: at K-IV, a dozen fine loops on each wrist, one for every thread she has read and refused to pull. When a circle closes, the bracelets glow, and a gold hairline runs round the line she drew.
  • Clothing, layer by layer: a linen shirt, sleeves rolled to the elbow so the bracelets show · a dark-green wool waistcoat with a healer's roll strapped across the chest (needles, gut thread, a fleam, splints) · a long divided skirt she can climb rigging in · sturdy laced boots · the long moss-green coat with circles chalked round its hem, renewed every dawn: eight small circles, one for each of the crew, and a ninth left blank ("for whoever's next").
  • Signature item: the ash staff with the white-iron ring at its tip. Its story is the story of her life.
  • Movement: deliberate and unhurried. She draws a circle in one continuous walk, the staff's ring scribing the line like a compass point, never lifted. Her stillness should feel chosen, never frozen. (Isa is the one who freezes.)
  • Voice: low, warm and steady, never loud. She asks; she never tells. Her sentences end like questions even when they aren't. Her balloons are round and plain with a thin gold rim. Lettering rule for the whole page: inside her circle nobody's balloon can be drawn as a command. An order's jagged, bold balloon turns plain and round as it crosses the line, and the ink loses its bold.
  • Variant looks: The Ring Closed (staff planted, gold line round the circle, everything inside drawn a shade calmer than everything outside) · Keeping (every heart in the circle drawn as a small gold pulse beating on her rhythm, a strand of her braid greying as you watch) · Ten (flashback: a girl in a chalk circle on an infirmary floor, holding a white-iron collar that wouldn't close) · Saga VI (the braid white to the tip, the staff planted in Ferdinand's bark).

Power

She draws a circle (chalk, ash, a rope on a deck), and inside it nobody can be compelled. No command, no rank-order, no collar, no decree, no Codex lock, no nightmare can make anyone do anything.

  • The line must be closed and unbroken. She draws it in one walk, with the staff's ring or her own hand, and the circle wakes when the ends meet. Break the line (rain on chalk, wind on ash, a cut rope, a boot dragged through it) and the circle is gone. Standing on the line counts as inside, as long as the line isn't broken.
  • Size: as big as she can close in one walk. Chalk makes a room, ash a camp, rope whatever rope there is laid end to end. A Rope Ring laid on a deck sails with the ship.
  • What "compelled" means: anything that makes a will move against itself. An order with a rank behind it; a collar's lull; binding script on an Examiner's rod; a decree read aloud; a thread re-tied by someone else (Orm); a nightmare riding a sleeper (Mörda's kind); a Codex lock's hunger (a Gluttony book can't make its soul eat); a voice that says "come" and means "you must". Inside the circle all of it goes slack, like a rope with nobody pulling.
  • What it does not stop: harm. A blade still cuts inside her circle. A man can still choose to kill. A storm still blows. What nobody can do is make anyone else. It's a sanctuary, not a wall: anyone can walk in, and anyone can walk out. Plenty of enemies have walked in with a knife.
  • Choices survive it. Someone inside who chooses something terrible does it. Someone who chooses to walk out walks out. That includes the people she loves.
  • What isn't compulsion, and works inside: a bend (Flexsnus's FLEX), a Knot both souls chose (Kompis's), a lent Shared Beat, a laugh caught freely (Tihi's), a meal shared (Roffe's Full Table).
  • What it can't do:
    • Mingus. Nothing has ever compelled him (his forms come from love, never from orders), so there is nothing for her circle to keep off him. He walks in and out of it like a rug in front of a fire. And the Keeping Beat can't set his heart to her time, because his is the beat hers is measured in.
    • The Null. The Null doesn't compel; it subtracts. A circle against making means nothing to a thing that takes, and the grey eats a chalk line like any other line. Phase One holds. (A signed writ that throws someone to the Null is the Order's signature on the Null's move: the reader's laughter or a stay can stop the reading, but once the grey touches anyone, her circle does nothing.)
    • Stop a blow; hold anyone in; make anyone stay; protect herself once she leaves.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 480. She almost never spends it on moving.
  • Home tempo: the Heartwood, discovered Saga V, Arc 7. Inside Ferdinand every growth ring is already a circle: she steps onto one and it's hers without chalk, as wide as the tree's years. Nowhere else is she so fast, or so calm.
  • Heartbeat technique: THE KEEPING BEAT. Inside her circle, every heart beats in her time, so no heart inside can overflow or be stopped. A full burn can't burst; a wound can't stop a heart for the beat she keeps; she can stitch an artery while a dying heart goes on beating on her rhythm. No one else holds every heart in a place to one beat.
  • Burn cost (and the HADOM OVERFLOW rule): her own heartbeats: one of hers for every heart she keeps, for every beat she keeps it. Ten crew kept for a minute is ten minutes of Emma's life. It is the overflow rule turned inside out: she doesn't force beats through her heart, which would burst it; she gives them away, and a heart that gives doesn't burst. It ages. On the page, a strand of the braid goes grey.
    • What it doesn't do: it doesn't refund the prices people choose. Vigolas's Minus One still costs his heartbeat; Kompis still bleeds from the nose; Isa's Backlog still hammers inside the ring (she just can't die of it). The Keeping Beat stops a beat from bursting; it doesn't make a beat free.
    • On the page, it failed by that rule (ch. 262): Skymning, who tore the seal off the seventh lamp's carboy and drank it, overflowing on the seventh hill. She drew the circle at a sprint, "Inside my circle nobody's heart overflows— The Keeping B—", and her heartbeat slid off his. "It won't take. It won't keep him." Daniel: "He chose it, Emma. He tore the seal and he drank. Your circle doesn't refund a price someone chose." (He lived only because he then chose to let the flame go.)
    • On the page, it held (ch. 268): Jeppson's Rivet Beat overflowing, a thousand builds counted as a thousand pieces; she skidded across the bowing deck on her knees and drew the circle in one sweep: "I can keep your heart, Jepp. I can't keep your ship. That's yours." The crack over his heart held, neither closing nor opening, until Krydog gave him one book.

The price

She can't leave the circle while it holds. And she can't compel anyone inside it, not even to save their life. If someone she loves chooses to walk out into a blade, she can call their name, and that is all. On the page, every time: her feet planted, her hands open, and her mouth saying "Please" where anyone else would say "Stay." The Keeping Beat's price is her own life, a beat for every heart kept: a grey strand in the braid each time, counted. The deepest price: she is the crew's conscience, and a conscience can't make anybody do anything either.

Weaknesses

  • Violence. The circle stops making, not hurting. Archers outside, a knife inside, a storm overhead.
  • She can't move. Once the circle closes she's a fixed target, and enemies who know her aim at her and not at the circle.
  • A broken line. Rain on chalk, wind on ash, a cut rope, a single boot dragged through it. Enemies have learned to bring buckets.
  • Lust VII · THE LONELY (codex-soul): cuts every thread in reach. That isn't compulsion, so her circle can't stop it, and Emma's own Lust-sight goes dark near her.
  • Choice. Anyone stubborn enough to choose their own death, inside her circle or out of it.
  • Her years. Every heart she keeps is a beat of her own life. A long war with a big ring would use up her whole life.
  • Her own rule: she will not draw a circle that picks a side. "A sanctuary that keeps the enemy out is a fort."
  • The Null: Phase One. The grey eats her line.

Gear & companions

  • The ash staff with the white-iron ring at its tip. The ring is a collar: the white-iron collar that couldn't close on her mother inside Emma's first circle, the day she was ten. The Sentinel dropped it on the infirmary floor, and she has carried it since. She scribes every circle with it.
  • The chalk tin: Jeppson's chalk, and the founding-day stub, worn to a nub, wrapped in a twist of cloth and never used again.
  • The ash-pouch: a pinch of ash from every fire she has ever sat beside.
  • The Rope: eighty fathoms of the Upp Igen's old anchor-cable, tarred and coiled on the quarterdeck. It's long enough to ring the whole ship.
  • The healer's roll: needles, gut thread, a fleam, splints, a bone-saw she hates, and herbs. Most of her healing is craft, not power: she's a very good surgeon who happens to be able to make a place where nobody can be forced.
  • The UPP IGEN: the broad, battered three-masted carrack, sunk five times and raised five times, five bands of differently coloured planks along her sides (Jeppson's cork-brown fallen-bark band at the rail), a bandaged fist for a figurehead and on her black flag, motto "UPP IGEN!". Emma's post is the quarterdeck. Her sick-bay is a ring painted round the foot of the mainmast. The paint is only a mark until she steps in and closes it with a finger, but by long custom nobody aboard, the captain included, has ever given an order inside that ring.

How they fight

She doesn't fight; she makes ground. She opens by drawing a circle where the wounded are, not where the fight is, and sews inside it while the battle goes on round the line. She finishes fights by asking: an enemy soldier who has stood in her circle for a minute without anybody making him do anything often doesn't pick his sword back up. Crew combos (the Up-Again crew):

  • Emma + Roffe, "the Hearth and the Line": whoever ate at his Full Table can't be turned against each other, and whoever stands in her ring can't be made to do anything. Together they make an army that can't be turned and can't be forced.
  • Emma + Daniel, "the Witness Ring": a witness standing inside her circle can't be compelled to silence or to lie. It's how the crew was founded. And the Kept Stay: inside the ring, Daniel's Stayed Beat can hold more undecided decisions than his heart can count, because no heart inside can overflow, and Emma pays for it. But Daniel can never file an appeal from inside her line: an appeal compels a hearing, and nothing can be made to happen in there. They respect each other across that line.
  • Emma + Tihi, "the Safe Hiccup": Tihi's Hiccup takes a beat out of everyone who hears it, and a full-burner who loses a beat can overflow. Inside the Keeping Beat nobody can, so the ring is the only place Tihi breaks her rule (never on a full burn).
  • Emma + Perne, "Marking in the Ring": inside the circle Perne can mark past her 72 in a Long Beat and not burst. Emma pays.
  • Emma + Krydog, "One Boot on the Line": two falls in one beat would overflow his Get-Up Beat; on her line it can't. "Fight under my flag. Rest in her ring."
  • Emma + Flexsnus: a bend isn't compulsion, so his bends work inside. He asks her first anyway, every time. Every Sunday she reads his tin lid and tells him which bends were worth it. She frowns at the hitch in his heartbeat.
  • Emma + Jeppson: her chalk-supplier. When she needs a circle bigger than one walk, he snaps the chalk line for her.

Marka combos:

  • Emma + Öde, "Sanctuary meets Remembrance": inside the ring nobody can make Öde choose which name to forget. But the hour still asks. "It's not someone making me. It's the hour." Emma sits with her while she chooses.
  • Emma + Rougeina: her circle is the first place Rougeina ever puts her blades down. Inside it, nobody can make her do anything: no list, no order, no mother in a mirror. She unbuckles the eight blades and sleeps lying down for the first time in the series.
  • Emma + Kompis: two Lusts. He ties; she won't. "I don't tie anyone." / "I didn't either. Once." A Knot both souls chose is welcome in her ring.
  • Emma + Isa: the Backlog still hammers inside the ring, but it can't kill her there.
  • Emma + Trollmage: he sleeps in her ring and nobody can make him wake up. He calls it "the best room on either ship."
  • Emma + Bakasura: "…Quiet in here."

Personality

  • Wants: a world where nobody can be made. Not ranked, not collared, not ordered, not even rescued against their will.
  • Fears: the moment someone she loves chooses to walk out of her circle into death, and she can say "please" and nothing else. Again.
  • Contradiction: the woman who refuses to give orders is the one the whole crew obeys, because they want to. She's a healer who lets her patients refuse treatment.
  • Humour: dry and maternal. "Sit down." (beat) "That's not an order." (beat) "Sit down anyway."
  • Habits: chalks small circles on everything without noticing (tables, sails, the blankets of sleeping crewmates); re-chalks her coat hem at dawn and leaves the ninth circle blank; asks before she touches a wound, every time, even when the patient is unconscious (then she asks anyway).
  • Alone: she draws a circle round herself and finally cries, because inside it nothing can make her stop, and nothing can make her start.
  • Her joy (Iskall's Look, ch. 256): a white-iron collar failing to close round a woman's neck, and the woman laughing in astonishment. Her mother, inside the first circle.

Relationships

  • Krydog: her captain. He says she's the only one who can make him stand still. She says she has never made him do anything. They're both right: she draws a circle round him, and asks. When he stayed down on Lumen she knelt by him ("Captain. Are you hurt?" / "No." / "Then why—" / "I just don't see the point.", ch. 258); when he got up with nothing: "You idiot." / "That's Captain Idiot." (ch. 259) · "Now he wants to." (ch. 261)
  • Daniel: the judge and the conscience. He believes in hearings; she believes in nobody being made. His appeal compels a court, so he can't file from inside her line, and they've argued about that across her chalk for five years, very politely. He's the one who told her why her circle wouldn't take on Skymning: "Your circle doesn't refund a price someone chose." (ch. 262). On Lumen she explained the Bottler to him: "He sold his own. Years ago. Everything he bottles, he's thirsty for." (ch. 257)
  • Tihi: the child in her first circle in twenty years. As near to a daughter as anything in her life, and she has never once told Tihi to stop laughing.
  • Perne: stitches the patches, keeps the second tally, and talks her down from the Perch by asking.
  • Roffe: the hearth and the line. He feeds whoever she heals, and she makes him eat his own portion once a year, on his birthday, by asking very nicely.
  • Flexsnus: reads his tin lid every Sunday. He's the only crewmate who asks her permission for anything.
  • Jeppson: her chalk, and the circles too big for one walk. Her ring round him and his heaps for eleven days (ch. 267), and her Keeping Beat round his overflowing heart (ch. 268): "I can keep your heart. I can't keep your ship."
  • Öde: Sanctuary meets Remembrance. Two women who keep people, one by memory and one by making room.
  • Rougeina: the first person ever to put her blades down inside the ring. Rougeina never thanks her; she sleeps lying down every time she's in it, which is thanks.
  • Kompis + Mingus: two Lusts, one who ties and one who won't. Mingus wanders in and out of her ring and lies down across the line, which shouldn't be allowed and is.
Story so far
  • IV · The Twelfth Chair: none on the page.
  • V · The Current:
    • Arc 1 · Fyren: seen with the crew unit, no power shown: the first mate who stitches the captain up after Krydog vs Vigolas I, sews the Wreckers' drowned back into breathing with needle and gut, and says "Sit down" to two captains at once. The reader sees the chalk circles on her hem and the white-iron ring on her staff, and isn't told why.
  • VI · The Third Sign: the Great Ring. A rope from every ship in the allied fleet, knotted end to end and laid on the bare bark of the Arena in Ferdinand's side: the one ground at the Convergence where nobody can be compelled. The Arbiter's ending can't make anyone end inside it.
  • Daniel steps out of the ring to file the challenge (an appeal compels; nothing can be compelled inside her line), and she can't compel him back in: "I can't make you stay." / "I know. That's why I trust it."
  • The Keeping Beat is why nobody bursts: Krydog's two falls in one beat (One Boot on the Line), Tihi's Hiccup across a hundred worlds, Perne marking past her count, Daniel's Stayed Beat at the very last, spent with one boot on her line, and, when the five burn at the very end, any of them who stand in her ring.
  • She keeps a hundred worlds' hearts for one terrible day, and her braid goes white to the tip.
  • The five, the crew and Mingus win it. The Up-Again crew make the win possible.
  • VI · Arc 1: Stage IV's fix: sleep inside a circle and the white stops at the chalk line round the dream (a dream can't be made); sleeping-rings on both ships, Jeppson drawing the ones she can't reach; a grey strand at her temple; Trollmage banks an hour ("Emma, I'll marry you." / "No, you won't.").
  • VI · Arc 2: inside her ring a Mender's stitch can't make anyone stop (ch. 344); she can't ring a moving man (ch. 347); "Give me one." (ch. 350).
  • VI · Arc 3, her spotlight on the away team: "Somebody has to draw a circle round that cabin." (ch. 352). Her one walk: a rope round the whole cabin in Heartbeat: "Sanctuary."; inside it nothing can be made to end (a hunter's D— can't finish forming); grey strands at her temple (ch. 353). In the cabin she needs no circle: the room is one (ch. 359). Takes her rope back from Nagel's door: "You'll need it where you're going." (ch. 360).
  • VI · Arc 4: "Come back." / "I always do." (Krydog, ch. 361); a rope ring on a smack's deck, then on the Upp Igen's with the refugees, Vaka, the sleepers and Pyssel inside (ch. 361, 365).
  • VI · Arc 5: "ROPE!": THE GREAT RING, 1,004 ropes (one from a wrecked Order hulk, "A sanctuary that keeps the enemy out is a fort"; one thin white cord nobody tied), laid as a great loop on the near half of the Arena floor; she kneels at its knot, staff planted (TUNK): "Nobody can make you end in here. Not the Order. Not the Null. Not it." She can't leave it till it's over. Floored too far below to keep Jeppson's heart in ch. 374. "Idiot." (Krydog, ch. 375, 378). Send-off: "Come back in when you need to." · "Nobody can make you end in there. Remember that. Whatever it shows you." (ch. 380).
  • VI · Arc 6: "Stay in?" / "Keep your heartbeats." (the five, ch. 381). The dead freed as they cross her rope, the Arbiter's square letters going plain and round (ch. 386); "Is everybody in?", white climbing her braid. The house-sized full stop comes down on the rope: KHUNK; the ink beads, cracks and runs back into the bark; she holds every heart in her time and her braid goes white to the tip (ch. 389).
  • VI · Arc 7: "Please." as the five step out (ch. 391); "He's asking. My ring can't stop asking." (an offer isn't a compulsion, ch. 394); the Keeping Beat holds Lärka at her ceiling, another white strand (ch. 395). The Null eats three ropes out of the Great Ring, the gold line breaks, a broken circle is just rope: "I said not the Null. I was wrong." (ch. 398); Kvar closes the gap with his body and Krydog ties Kvar's scarf of a hundred armies into it, and the ring holds again. "Is everybody in?" at the morning roll (ch. 400).
  • VI · Arc 8: "Nobody in here stops. But I can't take the Ring out there."; "I can't make you stay." (Daniel); "On the line counts as in!"; keeps a whole battlefield's waiting decisions in the Stayed Beat: her eyelashes go white ("I've got it, Daniel. Go on."); "CORKS!" Ch. 410: steps out of the Ring at last ("Is it over?" / "It's over." / "My knees.").
  • VI · Arc 9: one beat, no borrowed beat: nothing wakes Krydog till it's paid (ch. 411); offers her ring round the berth and Vigolas won't let her ("Look at your eyelashes." / "…My knees.", ch. 411); explains the overflow a hunter's palm would cause (ch. 412); makes Isa let go of a hold (ch. 414). "ROPE!": the Great Ring comes down the Bridge as a rope to raise the Upp Igen, Kvar's scarf in the gap: "Kvar's. It's not a ring today. Today it's a rope." (ch. 418).
  • Status at the end of Saga VI: braid white to the tip (ch. 389) and eyelashes white (ch. 404); the Great Ring a rope again, Kvar's scarf in it.
