Echo
The Woman in the Mirror
"…Little storm."
SinPride
Worldborn in Astralis; lives in the Hall Between
RoleANTAGONIST and a mother first
- Ch. 189–192: — · K-? · Scalelist —, flickering. There is no name: the Null took it first.
Look
- Build & height: 1.76 m, a hand taller than her daughter. A soldier's frame: square shoulders, long legs, strong hands, a sword-callus across the right palm. She stands with her weight forward, like someone holding a line.
- Face: Rougeina's face if it had ever been allowed to rest: the same fine bones, the same jaw, softer at the edges, with laugh lines and a small white scar on the chin (she fell off the barracks roof showing off; Räva remembers, ch. 194). She was 31 when she was routed. In the glass she looks about forty. Time doesn't pass in a mirror, but grief does.
- The missing half: her left side (her left; the reader's right) is not there, from the hairline down through the cheek, jaw, shoulder and arm. It looks as if someone wiped the glass, along a ragged edge with eight long notches in it. What shows there is the Null's grey, drawn by THE_NULL_AND_THE_ARENA 1.3: desaturated, a faint shimmer at the edge, a shape the eye slides off. Never black. The eight notches are where she cut her daughter's blades from her own glass. The edge of the Null came in through the cut (revealed ch. 193).
- Hair: crimson (the daughter's exact red), long and loose to the small of her back. In the glass it drifts as if under water, and it moves a beat late after she turns her head. Rougeina has worn hers short since ch. 93. Her mother's is the length Rougeina's would be if nothing had ever been taken.
- Eyes: green, her daughter's (Edvar, ch. 132: "You have her eyes."). Only the clear side has an eye.
- Skin & sin-mark: in the glass she is drawn in silver tones, like any reflection, except for her hair and her eye, the two colours the glass never took. Her Pride mark is a single silver ring on the inside of her right wrist: Rougeina's silver ring, without the rose.
- Clothing, layer by layer (what she wore the day she was routed): a sleeveless undershirt of grey wool · a high-collared soldier's tunic of Astralis night-blue · a long night-blue coat with one row of silver star-buttons (three missing), its left side gone with her left side · a soldier's belt with an empty scabbard · barefoot. Astralis soldiers stand barefoot on the black glass: "Feel where you stand." That is where her daughter learned it.
- Signature item: her mirror, which is her body. It is tall, narrow and frameless, a head taller than a door, made of blue-grey mirror-steel, with eight long slivers missing from its left edge.
- Movement: still and soldierly, then sudden. Everything she does has an echo: a faint second outline that repeats the movement one beat late. She never walks. She appears in the next glass, and she always arrives a moment after the person she's reflecting moves (a reflection can't go first), until ch. 197.
- Voice: warm, low and unhurried, "the way you'd wake a child", with a soldier's crispness underneath when she's afraid. Lettering: silver-rimmed balloons with a faint second outline offset behind them like an echo. Sometimes her last word repeats in small grey letters at the balloon's tail: "Come home, little storm. (…storm.)" When the grey half speaks (rarely), its balloon has a blank gap.
- Variant looks:
- In the glass: silver, half, hair drifting.
- The Echo: seventy-two copies of one hand.
- Overflow (ch. 191 small, ch. 197 fatal): a silver crack over the heart with light pouring out.
- Alive (flashback, ch. 193): both halves, full colour, laughing, a crimson-haired toddler on her hip in a thunderstorm.
- Out (ch. 197, one heartbeat): full colour, both halves, the plate above her head.
Power
She lives in reflections and acts through them: a mirror, still water, polished steel, a window at night, the surface of an eye.
- Appearing is free. She can show herself in any reflection, in a thousand at once (ch. 188, ch. 190).
- Speaking or reaching costs the reflection. Every reflection she speaks or reaches through goes grey afterwards and never reflects again. Wherever she has been, the mirrors are dead: Drekk's shaving glass (ch. 189), and the grey tower-mirrors of Astralis after twenty years of watching (ch. 192).
- Exception: her own mirror-steel. Her mirror, the eight blades and Bali's scales don't die when she speaks through them, because they are her.
- Exception: the Hall Between. It is her home, and every reflection in it is hers (ch. 194).
- Placing. She can pull a person whose reflection she holds to where that reflection stands: into a bucket of water (ch. 189), or three hundred mirrors deep into the Hall (ch. 194). She can hold any blade she can see reflected.
- The Quiet Voice. She can silence one of Smurjan's three voices for a moment, because she placed them (ch. 193, ch. 195).
- The Mend. She mends cracked mirror-steel, which is how she kept Bali (Saga III). She stops in ch. 195.
- Rules and limits:
- A reflection can't go first. She can only move what moves. A perfectly still person's reflection is still, and she can't place them (Rougeina, Isa: ch. 194, ch. 196). This is the rule Rougeina learned against a mirror-Nightmare in ch. 51.
- She can't place what has no place. Mingus: "That one cannot be placed" (ch. 191, the Archive's words from ch. 3). Vigolas: "There's no place for you. The count never gave you one" (ch. 194).
- She can't reach what has no reflection: Nässla, darkness, fog, wind-ruffled water, weather ("You can't reflect weather"), the shade under the Manticore's wings (ch. 191).
- Half of her is the Null's. Blades pass through the grey half and cut the clear half. Whatever the grey half touches goes grey (the Marka's rail and Drekk's tally-marks, ch. 191). No power ever touches the grey half itself (Phase One).
- She can't come out. "Every place is taken. To come in, someone has to go out." Things that have a place in the count can pass out of her glass (the Pride Codex, ch. 196). She can't, until she forces it (ch. 197).
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Tempo: 72. She was 144 alive, a fast K-III. Half her count went with half of her.
- Home tempo: the Hall Between, the endless corridor between the Mirror Bastion's two great mirrors. Every reflection there is hers, and she can be in ten thousand at once, which is exactly why it is dangerous for her.
- Heartbeat technique: THE ECHO. Inside one heartbeat, a single movement she makes in one reflection repeats out of up to seventy-two others at once: the same hand, the same reach, from seventy-two directions. No one else repeats one action across many places in a single beat. (Bali travels through every reflection in sight; Smurjan's three souls each act separately; Echo repeats.)
- Burn cost: THE OVERFLOW. Appearing is free, but every act counts against her seventy-two. Past seventy-two the beat overflows: a silver crack opens over her heart and light leaks out. A small overflow closes again, slowly and painfully (ch. 191, seventy-three hands). A large one can't close, and the soul bursts (ch. 197). Bali has counted her heart all his life ("Seventy-two. Past that, something in her chest doesn't close.", ch. 190).

The price
- She exists only in reflections, and every reflection she speaks through dies. Over three hundred years she has left a trail of dead mirrors.
- She can't go first. She spent three hundred years watching her own life without being able to warn herself.
- The blades cost her half of herself. The Null came in through the cut.
- The overflow, shown in ch. 191 and paid in ch. 197.
Weaknesses
- Stillness: "A reflection can't go first." Rougeina (ch. 196) and Isa (ch. 194).
- No reflection: fog, wind, darkness, weather, and the Manticore's shade (ch. 191).
- Nässla, who has no reflection at all.
- Mingus and Vigolas, who have no place to be put.
- Bali's RETURN sent her own silence back to her (ch. 195).
- Her love. The clear half stops the grey half (ch. 191).
- The count. She has no place in it, so she can't come out without breaking.
Gear & companions
- Her mirror (her body): mirror-steel, eight slivers missing. It shatters in ch. 197. Vigolas's RECREATE remakes it, empty (ch. 198).
- The eight blades, cut from her own left side and given to her seven-year-old daughter. Since they were a gift, they are the only mirrors in the world that don't crack when she dies.
- Bali, the kept piece, her herald. She raised him, mended him and used him.
- The Mirror-Wards (MIRROR-WARD · K-II MARKED · Architect Six's attendants (chair dark)). After Katriel's fall their masks became her eyes.
- The glass cottage: a copy, inside the Hall, of the Astralis cottage where Rougeina was born, with a table set with four bowls.
- The empty scabbard.
How they fight
A soldier's discipline in a mirror's body. She opens by placing, pulling you to where you don't want to be. Then comes The Echo: seventy-two of the same hand from every side. She disarms by holding your reflected blade and finishes by placing you into glass. She never strikes to kill her daughter. She is beaten by people who stand still, by weather, and by things with no reflection. The fight against her is always also a fight against her grey half, which reaches on its own.
Personality
- Wants: back in: into the count, and into her daughter's life. To hold her once.
- Fears: being a reflection forever. Being forgotten. It is the same fear as her daughter's (ch. 51), and Rougeina got it from her.
- Contradiction: the gentlest mother in the saga is a face of the Null. She loves the way a soldier holds a line: by putting everyone where she can see them.
- Humour: dry, a soldier's. "Took you long enough." It is Rougeina's line, and it was hers first (ch. 197).
- Habits: counts thunder. Hums the Astralis star-counting song. Straightens things in reflections: in her glass every picture hangs level, and even Trollmage's crooked crown sits straight (ch. 194).
- Alone: she watches her daughter sleep, in the eight blades.
Relationships
- Rougeina: her daughter, little storm. She wanted her in (the glass); her daughter wanted her out (the world).
- Räva: her younger sister. The night Tindra was taken, Räva hid behind a borrowed face and never looked into a mirror again. Räva is the one who remembered the other half of her and gave her name back (ch. 197).
- Bali: the kept piece, raised as a son, mended and used. He turned on her in ch. 195: "I don't take people who are asking."
- Kali: the twin she placed in Trinity. She set a bowl for her, and then took her without asking (ch. 193).
- Smurjan: the soul she split. He chose not to strike: "A mirror doesn't choose what's held up to it." / "I chose one thing. I kept the smallest."
- Bakasura: tasted her through a Ward's mask: "…Lonely." (ch. 190).
- Baldr: signed her routing, and lingered over her silver silhouette in the fracture record (Saga I, ch. 23 and 26). He recognised her.
- Edvar: routed her twice. The tea-ring was his.
- Katriel: signed the split.
- Ögar: never looks into a mirror, so Echo never reached her.
- Nässla: can't be reflected. She stung the truth out of Echo's sister (ch. 192).
- Vigolas: has no place either. He offered her one on his ship, by Hild's rule. "I am the wrong side of the rail."
- Kompis: saw her threads: one red-gold to her daughter, a thousand silver into every mirror, and one into grey nothing. He tied her into the crew for her last beat.
- Isa: her natural counter. At the end she counted Echo's heart: "It's open. It can't close."
- Öde: told Rougeina how the half-taken come back whole. She wrote TINDRA on her arm in silver (ch. 198).
- Mingus: "That one cannot be placed."
Story so far
- I: the fourth silver silhouette in the fracture record, taking the smallest piece (ch. 8, 10, 12). Baldr lingers over her (ch. 23, 26).
- II: "Little storm." from a real mirror-steel mirror in Sömnen (ch. 51). The fogged mirror in Smurjan's Arena match (ch. 74).
- III: speaks through Bali (ch. 79). A warmth in the blade at Smedjan (ch. 118).
- IV, Arc 4: every mirror on the Marka (ch. 188).
- IV, Arc 5 · The Mirror:
- She tells her daughter who she is, and tells Smurjan who split him.
- Her sister's real face, the Hall Between, Bali's turn, and the Pride Codex handed over.
- She attacks from every reflection at once, drives them into one body, steps out, and is counted and seen for one heartbeat.
- LOST in ch. 197 to HADOM OVERFLOW. Every mirror in the world cracks at the same instant.
- After: no return. Her name is cut on the Pillar of Names, and there is no grey boat: "There's nothing left to row." (ch. 198). The world remembers the night every mirror cracked. Little storm is never written on any page (ch. 214). Mirror-Step lives on.
