ALDHRUN · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Ten, Keeper of the Bastion (ch. 203 P1). Off every board, as all Architects are. In Saga II he appears only as "Architect Ten", a projection with no plate (ch. 34 notes).

Look

  • Build & height: 1.98 m and "broad as a door" (ch. 203): a soldier's bulk, thick neck, forearms like mooring posts. He stands with his feet planted shoulder-width, always, as if the floor might move.
  • Face: square, weathered, "a map of scars over scars". The newest, from the night of the Heist, runs from brow to jaw and never closed (ch. 203). It closes in death (ch. 208: Rougeina, two fingers on it: "…It closed."). At rest his face is hard and tired; his near-smile is "a flicker of something. Not quite a smile."
  • Hair & beard: iron-grey hair cropped to the skull; a full grey beard, trimmed square like a parapet.
  • Eyes: flint-grey, a soldier's eye that counts a crew one by one (ch. 203 P3). They stay his own while the grey climbs him (ch. 206: "His eyes still his.").
  • Skin & mark: weather-brown under a lattice of thin white scars, and in battle new thin red lines opening one per blow (ch. 203 P13). No sin-mark; the Signet glows on the back of his right hand, the hand he lays flat on the wall.
  • Clothing, layer by layer: padded arming coat · plate armour (dented, oiled, old) · the grey robe of office over the armour (ch. 203); he is the only Architect who carries weapons into the Council Hall.
  • Signature item: the tower-shield: white iron, taller than he is, its face "dented by a thousand blows", bearing the crest of a closed gate (ch. 27; Vigolas, ch. 34: "Love the crest. Very closed."). Across his back, a war-axe (never swung on the page).
  • Movement: heavy, deliberate, no wasted steps; turns his whole body rather than his head. In ch. 206 he does not move once all night (Isa: "…He hasn't moved. Not once. Not a hair."). Hits land on the wall; the reaction lands on his skin.
  • Voice: a low, gravel-bottomed growl; short sentences; grunts ("…Hm."). Orders, never requests. Balloons: squared, heavy-bordered, like masonry blocks. His last line is a thin, failing balloon.
  • Variant looks: The projection (Saga II, rising from a brass lectern-book on a ship's deck) · At the wall (shield to the stone, right palm flat on it, scars opening) · Grey to the waist (ch. 206 splash: still standing on legs that are less and less there) · Dead on his feet (ch. 206 P29, dawn) · At rest (ch. 208: laid out on his own shield, the axe on his chest, the guards' shields in a ring round him).

Power

He plants his shield and drags its edge along the ground, and a wall of white stone and hard light rises along the line, as high as he needs. In ch. 203 it rose cliff to cliff across a fjord-head, as high as the gate-tower.

  • What it stops: anything that walks. "Nothing that walks crosses it. Not a body. Not a Swap. Not a gate." (Trollmage, ch. 203). Bodies, blades, sins, gates, Swaps. The Unwritten pressed their grey hands flat on it and could neither cross nor grey it.
  • The rules: one wall at a time, and only while he stands behind it ("One wall. Only while I stand behind it. So I stand.", ch. 206). He can drop it one hand-width to let an ally through (Rougeina's Tear-Swap, ch. 203). It can be thickened by others: Trollmage's MACRO : WALL = THICKER swelled it a full metre (ch. 206).
  • What it can't do:
    • Hold anything that dreams. The crew robbed the Archive asleep (ch. 3), and the wall never felt them.
    • Hold anything that doesn't walk. The Null doesn't walk. It seeps under: "My walls hold anything that walks. That doesn't walk." (ch. 203). Phase One holds: no power of his ever touched the Null. He fought it with his body.
    • Mingus never needed stopping and never tested it; he walked the grey inside the wall, parting it at his paws, leading the wounded out (ch. 206).
  • The posthumous wall: after he died, the wall stood one more day on its own (ch. 208: Trollmage, "It needs him behind it." Isa: "…He's still behind it. Just not standing."), and faded at sunset.

HADOM, the heartbeat

  • Tempo: 8,000: not blows given, blows taken. It is the number of strikes his heart can count landing in a single beat without breaking.
  • Home tempo: the Bastion and its jetty, "my house" (ch. 203: "It's in my house."; ch. 206: "Not. In. My. House."). Below the floating Archive every stone answers his shield.
  • Heartbeat technique: BEHIND ME. For one heartbeat, every blow aimed at anyone standing directly behind him lands on him instead, as scars, and the wall in front of them doesn't so much as tremble. "Stand behind me. Directly behind me." (ch. 203). It's how the wall held through ch. 206's night: dozens of scars at once while the crew carried the wounded out. No one else turns one heartbeat of an army's blows into his own skin. (Isa stops a moment; Emma's circle forbids; Krydog rises from a blow; Aldhrun receives it.)
  • Burn cost: the scars stay. Every blow on his wall opens a scar, and he is "a map of every attack the Archive has ever suffered." A full burn of Behind Me opens a beat's worth at once. Past 8,000 in one beat, the HADOM OVERFLOW rule bites: scars that open and don't close, and a heart that can't shut. He never crossed it; the crew made sure of that by taking blows for him (ch. 203 P17: "Fewer blows. The crew is taking them for him."). What finally killed him wasn't a blow at all.

The price

Every blow against his wall lands on his body as a scar. Shown blow by blow in ch. 203 ("It's hitting you." / "Every blow on my wall lands on me. That's the price.") and by the dozen in ch. 206. The second price is the rule itself: the wall needs him standing behind it. So when the white seeped under, stepping back would have dropped the wall, and the Unwritten would have walked in with the Null behind them. "If I step back, the wall falls. If the wall falls, they walk in. And it comes in behind them." He didn't step back. It climbed him from the boots to the face all night.

Weaknesses

  • Dreamers walk past his walls (the Heist, ch. 3: the original failure).
  • Things that don't walk: the Null's seep (ch. 203–206).
  • One wall, one man: pin him behind it and he can't be anywhere else. He couldn't open it for Drekk (ch. 205: "If I open it, the tide comes in with you.").
  • Blood-debt pride: he spent two sagas hunting the crew over a robbery and took Stillmark's eyelids with his own hands so his hunter would never blink (ch. 60, Stillmark: "Aldhrun took the lids himself. So I'd never miss a target.").
  • Trust in the Council: he asked Glasheim for help, and Solvig answered that the Tideline would stop at his gate (ch. 203). It didn't. "I'm starting to wonder how she knows."
  • How he fell: not beaten. He chose it (Rougeina, ch. 206: "Look at him. He chose it."). He held till the tide turned at dawn and died on his feet, shield to the stone, hand on the wall.

Gear & companions

  • The tower-shield: white iron, taller than a man, closed-gate crest, dented by a thousand blows. His tool of office. He was carried into the Bastion on it (ch. 208).
  • The war-axe: across his back; laid on his chest at the end; Lärka carries it up the stair behind him (ch. 208).
  • The brass lectern-book: his projection's vessel on the Bastion's ships (ch. 34, 69, 74).
  • The BASTION sheet in his own hand: four names and a fifth line, empty, which he taps, puzzled (ch. 62: Stillmark's erasure).

How they fight

A fortress with a man inside it. He opens by choosing the ground and dragging the line (always across a choke point: a fjord-head, a jetty, a gate). He holds. He never chases. Allies fight from behind his wall: Rougeina Tear-Swaps out through the hand-width and back; Kompis fires Tyst over it from the gate-tower; Smurjan and the guards hold the cliff-paths at its ends; Öde's grass catches the fallen (ch. 203). He finishes a fight by outlasting it: hold till the tide turns. Team combos: Aldhrun + Trollmage (MACRO : WALL = THICKER; "…Troll king." / "Don't.") · Aldhrun + Rougeina (the hand-width; she takes blows off him) · Aldhrun + Drämmen (Drämmen works the far side of the wall, dragging the Unwritten back onto his puddles) · Aldhrun + Lärka (her HUSH round the wounded; she cleans his scars).

Personality

  • Wants: a wall nothing gets past, a house nothing gets into, and one thing that can't be forgotten (ch. 27).
  • Fears: the thing he can't see the shape of ("Something is being taken from us, and we can't even see its shape.", ch. 27). Being the one who let it in again.
  • Contradiction: the Order's hardest hunter turns his back on the woman who killed six of his colleagues because the Null is a bigger debt (ch. 203). He built a team to catch the crew, and died guarding them.
  • Humour: buried and dry. "…I'm told that's a compliment." · "…Bad company."
  • Habits: counts a room with a soldier's eye; grunts "…Hm." instead of thanking anyone.
  • Alone: at his desk in an office of white stone, staring at a line on a page he can't explain (ch. 62), or at the board (ch. 76, his pen rolling off the desk when THE DEAD column appears).

Relationships

  • Lärka: his Quiet. "She hasn't said a word to me in two years. She spent her one on you. Explain that." (ch. 203). She cleaned his scars, sat at his feet all night, and gave him her word at the end: "…Aldhrun." / "…There. That's… one." (ch. 206). She carries his axe (ch. 208).
  • Rougeina: six of his colleagues. "You killed six of my colleagues." / "Yes." / "…Some of them deserved it." / "All of them were on my list. You never were." (ch. 203). She stopped Vigolas from going after him ("He chose it.") and touched the scar that closed.
  • Vigolas: the thief. "You robbed my Archive." / "Borrowed." / "You fell out of it with a hall in your pocket." Later, "pirate". Vigolas stood over his shield with his cap in his hands, which he never does (ch. 208).
  • Kompis: the man his Lärka chose to speak to ("…I told her what she was hearing, once.").
  • Trollmage: "…Troll king." / "Don't." (ch. 206).
  • Solvig: the colleague who told him the tide would stop at his gate. His suspicion seeded Arc 7.
  • Stillmark: his hunter, built for Rougeina; he took his eyelids; then forgot him. "Aldhrun will put me back together. Send me again." (ch. 62).
  • Hrafnkell, Saltbrand, Ingen: the hunters he sent and demoted, and who left (Ingen: "That's not my name").
  • Drämmen: the drowned giant who stopped Vigolas going in after him: "Go in there and you're half. Then I'm dragging you."
  • Kvar: "I heard about the old soldier. Aldhrun. I'll carry him." (ch. 209).
