Jorvand Kestraal
- Ch. 222 P9, flickering into being for the first time in three hundred years, half its letters greyed out: JORVAND KESTRAAL · K-V ARCHITECT · Architect Twelve, Keeper of ████████ (his office redacted on his own plate).
Look
- Build & height: 1.94 m, tall, thin, a little stooped (ch. 222). In flashback, "a younger Jorvand, tall and straight." He ducks his head under doorways, including "the lintel of his own handwriting" (ch. 221).
- Face: two versions, and both are true.
- As Redactor (ch. 150, 209, 214, 215): no face: "a smooth blankness, like a page that has been written on and erased so many times the paper has gone soft."
- To Öde (ch. 169), and unmasked (ch. 222): "a kind, tired, lined face", a short white beard, grey eyes that look as if they've been reading for a very long time. (Ch. 169 notes: "To the one person who remembers everything, he has a face.")
- Cracking (ch. 228): where he's grey, "the Null's grey, soft, edgeless", "cracking, like old porcelain."
- Hair: white, short, thinning; the beard close-trimmed.
- Eyes: grey, a reader's eyes. Where a black bar crosses his face, there is nothing.
- Skin & mark: pale and paper-dry. Ink stains on the fingers of his right hand, the same as Hjalmar's (ch. 222): the hand that wrote the edits. After ch. 223 that hand is bandaged in a strip of black bar (ch. 225). No sin-mark; the Signet, long gone from his skin, hung over his chair.
- Clothing, layer by layer: a grey shirt and waistcoat, plain · a long grey coat that was once fine, ash-coloured, worn soft (ch. 150, 222) · over all of it, the black censor-bars, which "drift slowly across him like shadows of birds" (ch. 221) and fall away "like black snow" when he chooses to take them off "like a man taking off a pair of spectacles" (ch. 222).
- Signature item: the black bars. Then the Ledger page: VIGOLAS, eight lines struck, room for a ninth (ch. 150), carried "since the beginning" (Ysel, ch. 223). Then the grey pen, a sliver of pure Null (ch. 223).
- Movement: slow, gentle, unhurried; an editor at a desk (ch. 223). He doesn't strike. He raises a palm "like a teacher stopping a pupil" (ch. 214). He enters through pages: the far wall of his office is a page (ch. 221). When he's said aloud, he flinches as if from heat.
- Voice: gentle, old, kind; "soft as paper tearing, very gently" where he's grey (ch. 150, 215); "like a page turning" (ch. 215); from the shard, "like a grandfather speaking from the next room" (ch. 218). He calls Vigolas "boy" in nearly every line. Balloons: plain, edged in faint grey (ch. 219); where a word of his is withheld, a black bar sits inside his own balloon.
- Variant looks: The faceless figure (ch. 150: sitting on nothing at the Null's edge with a Ledger page) · At the acre's rim (ch. 169: standing on the water, looking fond) · At the window (ch. 214–215: one hand raised; one hand on Solvig's shoulder "like a father's") · Unmasked (ch. 222) · The struck hand (ch. 223–225) · Cracking (ch. 228) · A faint outline in the grey, watching (ch. 229).
Power
He draws a black bar across anything, and what lies under it is withheld: still there, not said. "It doesn't erase. It withholds. The thing's still there under it. Just… not said." (Trollmage, ch. 221).
- What he barred on the page (ch. 221, 223, 227): rank plates (████ · ████ · Scalelist ████, Vigolas's included); names in mouths (Kompis tried to shout Rougeina's and got ████!); Öde's arm of names; a Swap's destination; Smurjan's voices ("alone inside himself"); Isa's sight; the Gluttony Codex (it "goes dead"); the Marka herself (the Margin's bars poured down the mountain: her name M████, the Kettle's bell, the CAMILLA plank, the barley). The office's own bars "peeling up… like strips of tar", flying "like a flock of black ribbons or bats" (ch. 221).
- The seven edits (his life's work, ch. 220–221): seven Ledger sheets headed VIGOLAS, each struck with "one long, patient black line" and corrected "in a smaller, gentler hand": one rank subtracted per life, K-V → K-IV → K-III → K-II → K-I → UNMARKED → —, then one more, and the count rolled over to ∞−1. "The only soul in the world the Order can't number. Can't own. Can't route." (ch. 222). He picked that soul because of its dream ("the only thing he didn't edit").
- The ninth line (ch. 223–224, 228): ∞−1 minus one more = ∞, "minus nothing… A soul with no edge is a door with no frame, boy. Anything can come through." The stroke opens a grey doorway in Vigolas's chest. It won't take while he's worth something to someone ("The line won't take. Not while he's worth this much to anyone."), and under the Minus One ("I give up being made") the grey ink beads like water on wax (ch. 228).
- The Margin (ch. 224–229): "Everything nobody said. Everything nobody was allowed to say. I keep it." Anything said inside is filed at once as unsaid (a jar, a note); things leave when they're finally said aloud; "There's no way out of a place where nothing's ever said." On its shelves: Vider's thousand years of unsaid "I love you"s; the Arena's first rules, "before I redacted the cruel ones"; the names of Rougeina's dead. Saying Jorvand's name and office aloud emptied it (ch. 228), and it closed.
- The leash: "a thin silver chain running from the Vault's floor out through the window into the grey". For forty years he waved back through Solvig's window; she opened it and the chain passed into his hand (ch. 215). "He's got it. The leash. And he's pulling." (Kompis, ch. 229). Stage III is permanent.
- What it can't do:
- The Immunities. Threads (love: "He can bar the word! He can't bar the thread!"), Shared Beat ("A heartbeat counts itself. He can't bar it."), Mingus: "…And you. You never had a line. You're what all of it is counted in." (ch. 223). He admits it himself: "No. I never could. Love's one of the five."
- Kali, "next to" rather than inside: "I'm not in you, I'm next to you!"
- A gift with no price (Levla's, ch. 227: "Given. By a man who never gave anything. I didn't plan for that.").
- Saying. What is said aloud leaves his Margin, and his own name said aloud cracks the bar off his plate.
- The Null, as a weapon: he holds its leash; he isn't its master. He walked in to understand it, "…And it understood me."
HADOM, the heartbeat
- Home tempo: the Margin, where nothing is said and nobody is worth anything ("Here there's too much worth" he says of the office full of the crew, ch. 224). Before that, the office: "the only place he was ever happy" (Ysel, ch. 220).
- Heartbeat technique: THE GENTLE CORRECTION. Inside one heartbeat, at a single soul's birth, he strikes one line of the Ledger and rewrites it one step down, and the Ledger accepts it as if it had always been so. Seven times, in seven lives: "the same gentle hand drawing one black line through a rank." (ch. 221). No one else changes the First Ledger permanently, inside a beat. (Hjalmar's forced entries dry back after sixty heartbeats; Jorvand's never did. Only Hjalmar's fingers ever felt them.)
Techniques
| Technique | What it does | Cost | First shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| REDACT | Black bars withhold plates, names, sight, voices, powers, a ship | Bars on himself | Ch. 221 (the office's bars), ch. 223 (his own) |
| The Gentle Correction | The heartbeat technique: the seven edits | Seven lives of patience | Planted ch. 1; shown as record ch. 220–221 |

| The Ninth Line | The grey stroke on the Ledger page that would make ∞−1 into ∞, a door | Never took | Ch. 223–224, 228 |
| The Grey Pen | A sliver of pure Null drawn out of the air: blades, Bror's shove and COMPACT can't touch it | Soaked into the Margin's floor (ch. 228) | Ch. 223 |
| The Margin | Takes the fight to the place where nothing is said | Emptied when he is said aloud | Ch. 224–229 |

| Lot 11 | Bought Vigolas's fear of the dark at Skatt's auction, "PAID IN PAPER", so a door wouldn't flinch; gave it back | — | Ch. 46 / 152 (planted), ch. 225 (returned) |
The price
He is more bar than man, and "less every year" (ch. 222). He walked into the Null "to understand it" and came back "with its voice. And my face. Mostly." (ch. 222). Hjalmar, the friend who loved him, kept his secret for three hundred years and finally said his name to his face and to the frieze. He has lost the Twelfth Chair for ever and taken its Signet into the grey. And seven lifetimes of patience ended with the one soul he made refusing him, afraid of the dark and walking toward it anyway.
Weaknesses
- Blades cut the man where he's still a person.
- The Keystone: his right hand, "the ink-stained hand that wrote the edits". Vigolas's deeper Greed-sight found it; the Emerald Knuckle landed there and shattered the black-bar pen into "black confetti", and half the bars fell (ch. 223).
- Worth said aloud (ch. 224): the crew, then Hjalmar, said what Vigolas was worth to them, and the ninth line wouldn't take.
- Being said (ch. 228): "Jorvand Kestraal. Architect Twelve. Keeper of the Arena." cracked the bar off his plate and emptied the Margin.
- The Minus One (ch. 228): "I give up being made."
- Gifts: Levla's free giving broke his auction-bought plan (ch. 227).
- Indecision. "Seven lifetimes I tried to decide. I never once tried to decide with them in the room." (ch. 224).
- Not beaten. He withdrew: "I'm still going to end it, boy. I've walked too far to walk back. I'll do it without you." / "Then I'll be there." / "I know. Then the Null will need another door." (ch. 228).
Gear & companions
- The black shard: "I'm what he left behind. The part of him that had a desk." (ch. 219). His redacted office, stolen from the Archive by Vigolas (ch. 3, 8); greyed what touched it; frosted at the eighth edit (ch. 28) and completely at Saga III's end; thawed and spoke (ch. 218–219); the key to the Twelfth's door ("I'm its key. You're my hand."). After Vigolas said the office aloud, just a shard, left in the door.
- The Ledger page (VIGOLAS, eight struck, room for a ninth): now a white die with a grey line inside in Vigolas's coat (ch. 228).
- The black-bar pen (shattered, ch. 223) and the grey pen (gone into the Margin's floor, ch. 228).
- The jar, LOT 11 · SOMETHING SMALL · PAID IN PAPER (empty now, in Vigolas's coat).
- The silver leash. The 78th Codex.
- Servants and allies: the Unwritten (— · UNWRITTEN · —); Ysel, once ("He only wanted one.", ch. 8); Solvig, his window for forty years.
How they fight
He talks first. He unmasks, explains everything, and offers his hand ("So come and decide with me.", ch. 222). Refused, he withholds: works through a crew "gently, precisely, like an editor at a desk", barring plates, names and powers one at a time until they can't say who they are. Then he finishes: the ninth line. And if he can't decide with people in the room, he takes the fight somewhere nothing is said. He never raises his voice, never throws a blow, never gloats. Combos (enemy side): Redactor + Solvig (the window and the leash) · Redactor + the Unwritten (they make you lose names; he takes the rest) · Redactor + the Null (he holds the leash; it does the taking). What beat him: the crew's Immunities (Kompis's threads and Shared Beat, Kali beside Smurjan, Mingus's bark), Vigolas's Keystone and Minus One, Öde's "Out loud!", Levla's gift, Ysel's door, and Hjalmar's voice.
Personality
- Wants: the same thing Vigolas wants: "Nobody ranked by anybody. Ever again." His way: "Mine: everyone gone. No ranks, because no one. No half, no whole. No lost. No forgotten. No pain." (ch. 222). "It isn't mercy. It's rest."
- Fears: deciding. For seven lives he couldn't choose between key and door.
- Contradiction: "the gentlest of the Twelve" (Vigolas, ch. 225) wants to end everyone; the man who made Vigolas unrankable did it out of love for his dream.
- Humour: gentle and dry. "Thank you for checking." · "Clever boy. The crowned one. Your great-great-grandmother was cleverer." (to Trollmage, ch. 219).
- Habits: notices small things ("You hum three notes and stop. Every time you're happy." · "You tie the bowline wrong now… Both are fine. I only notice.", ch. 219); calls him "boy"; keeps everything unsaid.
- Alone: in a lamplit office with walls of blacked-out pages, a chair pushed back as if he'd only just stood up.
Relationships
- Vigolas: "boy." Maker and mirror. "That's the hand I made you with." · "You were never a chair, boy. I'm the one who's a chair." (ch. 223). "Key or door? Neither. I'm the CAPTAIN." · "Seven lives I made you to be a key or a door. And you turned out to be a hand." (ch. 228). "I'll do it without you." / "Then I'll be there."
- Hjalmar: his friend. "…Hello, Hjalmar. You never told anyone. I always knew you wouldn't." / "…I should have." / "Yes. But you loved me. That was always the trouble with you." (ch. 222). Hjalmar says his name every morning now.
- Solvig: his pupil at the window. "Open it, Solvig. Let me in. Let's end it kindly, the way you always wanted." · "…Goodbye, Solvig. Thank you for keeping it so long." (ch. 215). "She was wrong too. It isn't mercy. It's rest."
- Ysel: "little shadow" (Marka's name for her, in his mouth). She said no: "…Good for you." (ch. 215). "You look whole. It suits you." / "…And you came back grey." (ch. 222).
- Fenna: she witnessed every one of his edits (the shard, ch. 219) and greeted his footprints: "…You again." (ch. 28).
- Öde: the only one who saw his face at the acre's rim (ch. 169) and told no one.
- Levla: outbid at auction by a "grey fellow" paid in paper (ch. 152); undone by Levla's gift (ch. 227).
- Rougeina: first to say his name ("…Jorvand.", ch. 219); first to cut him ("You bleed."). He keeps her dead's names on a shelf in the Margin.
- Mingus: ears flat, stands in front of his people; growls at him (ch. 223). "You never had a line." Mingus walked into the Margin's white to lead Vigolas out (ch. 229).
- The Arbiter: what he left behind in his chair.
- Trollmage: "Clever boy." (ch. 219, 222).

- VI · Arc 8: an open door at the floor's centre, the Null's tail through him; "You again." to Fenna. Turns his door ("A door opens both ways.") onto the Cut, where Dolk holds the wound open. The Null won't sleep alone: "Somebody has to sit with it, boy. I let it in. I'll see it home." "I took seven lives off you… I left the dream." / "Best thing you ever did." / "No, boy. Best thing you ever did." "Key or door. I never decided." / "Neither. I'm a captain." / "Yes. You are." Takes Vigolas's hand (he knows the word Here, and says nothing). "Tell Hjalmar. It stopped stinging." Walks into his own door, a hand on Dolk's shoulder (the child doesn't flinch), and sits beside the sleeping Null in Void-II. Witnessed by Fenna. ARC LOSS (Arc 8). Status: in Void-II, alive, witnessed.
- VI · Arc 9: Hjalmar is told his last words, "It stopped stinging." (ch. 413). He reads to the sleeping Null, and Dolk hears the pages through the Cut (heard, never shown: Void-II stays unseen, ch. 420).
- Status at the end of Saga VI: in Void-II, sitting with the sleeping Null, reading to it; witnessed by Fenna, so he can come back someday; the Cut kept open a hand's width.
